  • A valuable and comprehensive review
This a very comprehensive review of all the elements that go into video production from beginning to end. My son is a documentary film maker, and now I have a much deeper sense of the complexity and range of the skills that he needs to doing the excellent work that he does. Definitely a valuable read. ... show more

  • Excellent Book for Filmmakers!
I had to purchase this book for one of my college classes at the Art Institute of Phoenix. This book shows the ins and the outs of filming films using only one camera. If you are going to be going to school to be a filmmaker I strongly suggest this book.

  • Excellent survey of filmmaking
Many moons ago, when I was in high school and my first year of college, I was obsessed with film. Unfortunately it was the dawn of the digital film-making age. I knew some basics and all of the editing I knew how to do was pre-software editing. I later taught myself how to use some of the basic software tools but have since not used the skills in years. I picked this book up to refresh myself on the little I did know, and to update some of my skills with the new technologies (lighting has always been my downfall). I found this book to be very thorough and honest about what making a good single camera film requires. It isn't all technical or locked into a specific set of technologies. Instead it is more of a survey on what you do from planning to pre-production to post production. The information was all good, very well written though at times it got a bit dry (it is a textbook after all). I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in taking their videos from selfies and random i-phone shots to the next level. You don't have to own a several hundred dollar camera to employ the skills you can get from this book. You can do almost all of these things with your cell phone camera and just come out with a better product in the end. ... show more

  • Excellent how to book for the beginning film maker
This book provides all the needed knowledge tools to help you successfully create movies of any length. The first chapters discuss equipment in enough detail to help you determine what types of movie camera, tripods, mounts, audio equipment, cabling and lighting you will need to make your movie. The book then talks about the three key steps, pre-production, production and post-production you should take to produce your movie. The book goes into detail about how to budget, organize, script, setup lighting, framing, shooting, keeping track of shots, setting up, tearing down (striking), and many facets of post-production to complete your movie. This book is extremely instructional, and for me, every page had something to teach me. The back of the book also has an extensive glossary of production terms that a movie maker should know as well as a chapter on how to build up a portfolio and turn it into a career. I really enjoyed the book, and while I do not plan to produce movies or work in TV, I can see that this book will help me make how-to videos for my small business and much better home videos for my family. For the serious film maker, this book should be a must read text. ... show more

  • Comprehensive basic introduction
My library contains numerous books on film and video production and theory, many are from my years as a graduate student in Film and Video. Single-Camera Video Production was written specifically for students new to video production, those who want a refresher and those who are new owners of video cameras. As described in the introduction, this is not an in-depth study of video production, but a basic introduction and it is an excellent resource which I think would be especially valuable for high schools and colleges. Since many people view themselves as an instantaneous auteur, this book provides information to demonstrate that there's more to producing and completing a video project than meets the eye. This sixth edition includes more information on digital video. ... show more

  • A textbook to teach you video production
The book title emphasizes that this is a book about video production involving just one camera, which means less complexity but the principles are really very similar. It is a textbook and primer for people interested in professional video production. Video is visual storytelling, so it is often the artistic part rather than the technical/production part that matters. Nonetheless, a videographer needs to master the technical part well in order to achieve the desired effects well. This is the main aim of the book - to teach you all aspects of video production in one broad stroke. The first chapter describes the video production process, the importance of setting goals/objectives/audience analysis, workflow, and technology. It also compares the difference of studio and field production. The second chapter covers the aesthetics part of video which is discussed lightly although the author admits that it is an important non-technical part. The third chapter introduces video production technology terms that you need to know. The fourth chapter is about all aspects of video gear which spans about 70 pages. The fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters are about video preproduction, production, and postproduction, respectively. This book is an excellent starting point to learn about the technical part video production. ... show more
