    • Smells like cancer

Due to an extensive ongoing renovation, this desk was left unopened for ten months. Upon finally opening the box, I was immediately assaulted with toxic fumes - unmistakably formaldehyde, with a side order of eau de spray paint. Lucky for me, I know how to remediate formaldehyde, and have an enclosed sunroom to conduct the decontamination process - safely contained away from my family. I started with a commercial hydroxyl generator running for a week straight plus high heat from an auxiliary heater. It was still really bad! I had to use my least favorite trick - ammonia fumes. Ammonia reacts with formaldehyde to produce hexamine - basically, end of the day, it eliminates the formaldehyde. I let that work for a couple of days, aired out the remaining ammonia fumes, and wiped down the desk. If I’d have opened that box within the return period, I’d have returned it on principal! I know most people don’t know how or go to the efforts I do to eliminate these type of toxic (known human carcinogens) from their indoor home environments… and no company should be sending products this contaminated in to peoples homes!!! It’s criminal. And they have plenty of low cost alternatives - *IF* they care. It’ll be my last purchase from simpli-home. I’m breaking up with them. The desk had seams on two areas of the desktop (corners) that were out of alignment far enough that bare, unstained wood is clearly visible. I’ll have to fix that. The center drawer face is tilted outward when closed, where it should be flat/flush. That doesn’t look repairable because of how the hinges are installed. The brown stain color has some fairly strong yellow undertones, not my favorite, not a dealbreaker. ... show more

Great desk as far as look and sturdiness. It sits high so it’s difficult to sit high enough to be comfortable, and cross your legs under the desk at the same time. I live in a dry climate and the wood starting to crack after just a few weeks.

It looks stylish once assembled and resembles its pictures online. However, it smells terrible. For the first day it was absolutely awful. We opened the windows of the room it was in, and turned the ceiling fan on high, to try to get rid of the smell. We've had it for a couple of days now, and we're still airing out the room it's in. The smell is better now but it's still there. At this rate, it should hopefully be stink-free in another day or two. Yet, the stink was a very nasty surprise, and the reason I knocked a star off of the desk's rating. We've ordered furniture online before, including furniture from Amazon. We also ordered this desk directly from Amazon, and not from a 3rd-party seller. We'd never before ordered a piece that smelled THAT bad on arrival, though. Shipping was fast and product was well-packed. 4 stars only because the desk has some slight damage that may or may not have occurred during shipping.
