  • Just as good or better than canon- pro opinion
As a professional in the field for 10 years, I needed a new 70-200 for my canon 5d4. I love that this lens is black, weather sealed, has great image stability, and is tack sharp... bonus is the price! It’s just as good as the newest canon 70-200 2.8 IS and is far cheaper. I use this lens for weddings, portraits and videography work as well. All around a great lens. If you are used to canon this will take a little getting used to because the focus and zoom rings are swapped in position. Also the mounting ring is not removable, which is fine with me. The rotation on the mounting ring is smoother than canon and I love that it has marked stops at the 90 and 180 degree rotations. Also, the lens hood is far superior to canon- finally a hood that locks in place! It even uses a release button to remove, so I will no longer be accidentally knocking it off throughout a wedding day. Overall I’m very happy with this purchase! The seller was great and shipping was right on time! ... show more

  • Fast, Sharp, and Heavy
UPDATED REVIEW: After 5 Years of Professional Use: The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 Sport continues to be a staple in my professional kit. I have used it on numerous client projects over the years for portraits, restaurants/food, events, brand/lifestyle, street photography, and both video and photo. It has traveled with me across the world, in different climates and environmental conditions, and has held up extremely well. The only thing I am starting to notice is a very faint squeak when the autofocus mechanism is engaged when it hunts for focus, but it's something that can be serviced at any professional camera servicing company. I have not gotten the lens professionally cleaned or serviced since I first purchased it, and it is a testament to the quality of this product that it has continued to hold up so well over 5 years of professional use. Image quality is outstanding, and I am able to use it to get a wide range of shots (85mm for portraits, and up to 200mm to simulate "macro" photography). For the value, it's hard to beat this lens from Sigma, and I have since purchased 2 other Sigma lenses (35mm prime 1.4, and 18-35mm 1.8). All of the lenses I have purchased from Sigma perform extremely well, and work perfectly with my Canon family of camera bodies. I have uploaded more photography that include the range of photos I have taken for more examples. ====================== The Short: Fast, well-built telephoto lens with high quality materials and weather sealing, smooth and quiet focusing, producing great images with reasonable cost compared to other brands (Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.) ------------ You can find super technical reviews online, especially on Youtube, so I will not get into it too much in my review. Instead, I'll talk about its usability. Here are the things you should consider if you are thinking about buying this lens: Size & Weight: Coming in at 3.97 lbs, this beast of a lens is going to be a workout for your arm if you are not used to handling bigger telephoto lenses in this focal range. Even if you are used to them, this lens still comes in at the top of its weight class, heavier than the updated Canon 70-200 IS III and Sony's FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS (both 3.3 lbs), as well as Nikon's AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8E (3.1 lbs). It may not sound like 4 lbs is a lot, but the weight starts to add up once you include the camera body and battery pack. The lens itself is also physically bigger than its competitors, which may not really be an issue depending on your shooting style (IE: if you shoot mounted vs. hand-held). If I am on a shoot with more than one camera, I definitely have this one strapped via a dual camera harness so I don't have to bear its weight the entire day. Focus: Fast and accurate focus, with no focus breathing even in its highest focal range. Again depending on what you are shooting and how you shoot, it might not be a problem, but focus breathing can change your composition. Minimum Focus Distance: 47.24 in. minimum focusing distance (just under 4ft). On par with Canon's latest version, longer than Sony & Tamron. Not a problem if you are shooting portraits & events most of time with this lens. I also love it for product shots, just understand that you will need some space to move around when shooting in a studio setting. Tripod Ring: The included tripod ring is NOT removable, though it can be rotated 360 and locked at any position on the lens. There are pre-marked places where the ring will "click" into, which is nice. I typically rotate the ring 180 when I am shooting hand-held so the stand is on the top of the lens. That way, my grip is comfortable along the lens without the stand getting in the way. Zoom Ring Placement: Unless you are shooting manual, you are probably going to be zooming in and out more than you are going to be manually adjusting focus. The Zoom Ring is on the FRONT of this lens, and the Focus Ring is on the rear closes to camera body. Because of the weight distribution inherent with using a long and heavy lens like this, your hand is going to be on the rear ring most of the time if shooting hand-held. What this means is that you are going to have to rely on your right hand to support weight of the rig while you shift your left hand's grip towards the front of the lens every time you need to adjust your focal length. This is probably my biggest complaint on this lens. Not a deal breaker at all, just annoying. Price: If you are looking to invest into a pro-quality telephoto lens, but can't justify the price tag for a first-party lens, I highly recommend this Sigma 70-200 Sport lens. It is tremendously well-built (feels like a tank) with stellar performance, enabling you to make some of the best images your camera is capable of producing. Why I chose this lens: I am a Canon shooter, and have historically only purchased Canon glass. Canon's 70-200 IS II is priced at $1800 and is relatively in the same range as this Sigma 70-200 Sport, except it was first released in Jan 2010 and is almost 10-years old. The newer Canon 70-200 IS III was released in Aug 2018, just a month before Sigma released theirs, but its cost is significantly higher at $2099. Based on where my business is at, I couldn't justify the spend, so I ultimately went with the Sigma. ... show more

  • This is your go-to wildlife lens
I have the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens and the Sigma 120-400mm zoom. The zoom is a bit soft and the auto focus is slow so I bought this lens for my Galapagos trip. It did not disappoint! the focus is tack sharp and the f/2.8 gives me great low light performance and great separation of the subject from the background (bokeh). Its a few ounces heavier than the Canon lens but I think the Sigma glass is just better overall. I love this lens. ... show more

  • Good lens
Lens has sharp, fast focus. At f2.8 it is a good lens for sports.

  • Amazing lens. Heavy, but absolutely worth it.
I used this for. Weddings on a Canon 5D iv. The only time it misses focus is to be expected. That is very non district lighting situations. The non removable tripod mount becomes a non issue by just parking it in the best spot for your style.

  • So far a great competitor for the Canon version
I've shot nothing but with Canon lenses and the Canon 70-200 version of this lens was my work horse and it has always pulled through. I retired for a bit and came back. This time around I thought to try Sigma and it has been fantastic. Although a bit heavier it's not really that noticeable. What I noticed in the beginning because of muscle memory with Canon is that the zoom is the front ring and the focus is in the back. I don't manually focus so I'm not missing that being in a different place. Although sometimes the tripod ring gets in the way because it's not removable (not really) but I love how smooth the ring moves. I just move it out of the way. The build quality is great so I appreciate that. Again, it's a big change from canon but for the price it's an absolute value. ... show more
