Mounted on my Nikon d7200, this lens has been a ton of fun. It has performed in every weather condition and is well constructed for heavy use. I carry this lens a lot, it is VERY large, and has taken a while to build up muscle to carry and hand hold it, but it is totally worth it. This lens takes very nice macro shots, portraits, and wildlife photos. I have been impressed with this lens from the moment I opened the box. It looks and feels like a much more expensive lens. The autofocus is as good or better than my Nikkor 200-500mm. The weight is slightly more but I still use it handheld with a Nikon D610. I'm very impressed with photo quality at every distance. It's been amazing being able to shoot over such a wide range with one lens. I can't afford a second setup but this lens allows me to move from far reaching bird photos to close up flower photos instantly. ... show more

For an armature photographer this is an outstanding value. I have a Nikon d7100 and was looking at an equivalent Nikon lens and they were close to $10K and more. This thing is a monster! But...I love it. I have only had a chance to use it once so far but the clarity at 600mm is great. I'll check back later this summer with an update if I remember.

Nikon D850 Nikon Z6 While you can use this glass for portraits, please stick with lenses that keep your subject at a level of intimacy rather than yanking this beast from your bag. It’s a truly versatile lens that I’ve used on spot news, for weather art & at baseball football and basketball games. The chips these days can handle what light can be gathered by the 60-600mm glass & I simply keep the entire setting at f 6-3 rather than having the f stop change through the zoom process. The tracking always seems to start after one or two frames of shooting but that’s my own camera’s AF setting at play. It’s done a terrific job with night high school games which are truly dark (ISO 50,000+) and the sharpness is mostly crisp save for perhaps somewhere between 300-400mm where it seems a nose hair soft. That said, post-capture sharpening theses days can make even the more out of focus images look stellar. This is my swear-by beast. If I had one camera to take it would be this glass coupled with that new Nikon Z9 which captures 30fps in full frame. Not once in over a year of professional shooting have I wished for a different type of lens, and this comes from a 38yr veteran who has used glass from a 200mm f 2.0 to the 400mm 2.8, 500mm f 4 and 600mm f 4 Nikkor lenses. Some complain about the depth of field and insist that such lenses yield better OOF background and I see their point. But with my profession I want that camera to stay at my eye rather than switch between long telephoto and short glass. While others around me are whipping around their hip gear to capture the action when it comes close I’m still banging off images while tracking the action even as it comes into my kitchen. Because editors don’t give a crap whether the background is a smidge softer - they want to know whether you’ve gotten the shot of the game, and staying focused on game action rather than switching cameras keeps me at the top of my craft. Game tip: shoot really loose and let your camera do the work of having the pixels to crop in to action rather than being so tight that potential portions of the action get cropped out of your image as you shoot. The football image was shot really loose which allowed me to crop to whatever I needed in the image. ... show more

At 60mm, the lens can be used for everything from portrait to landscape photography (the picture of the wallaby was shot at 105mm at a distance of just over 3 feet). At 600mm, it can capture small details on objects beyond human eyesight. To get the most out of this lens, it's best to calibrate it to your specific camera body using both the software on your camera and the Sigma USB dock (sold separate). I was more than a little bit surprised to discover how accurate the lens was right out of the box. The first three shots are of the antenna array on Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado. The first, at 60mm, shows the detail in the surrounding houses. The second, at 600, shows the detail of the array. The third is a zoom in of the second to show just how much detail the lens captures. What makes the lens so incredible is that the antenna array is just over 14 miles from the location where the photograph was shot. The last photo was taken at 600mm of the moon on a clear night. The detail captured is equal to or better than a moderate telescope. This truly is the one lens to rule them all. Suggested: to protect your lens, it is advisable to purchase a UV filter - in the event something happens, it's far easier and less expensive to replace a filter than it is to purchase a new lens. Also, consider purchasing a CPL (circular polarizer/linear) filter because at lower settings you will be able to capture landscapes, seascapes, and clouds/sky. The addition of a CPL filter will enhance the colors and deepen the blue of the sky making for more dramatic photos. Last, while not required, a sturdy tripod with a minimum weight load of 15LBS is highly recommended. The lens attached to a Nikon D810 (with battery pack) weighs in at 9.2LBS. ... show more
