Description

A powerful and accesible bilingual picture book that highlights "the power and impact of ordinary but dedicated citizens."Every day, thousands of farmworkers harvested the food that ended up on kitchen tables all over the country. But at the end of the day, when the workers sat down to eat, there were only beans on their own tables. Then Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez teamed up. Together they motivated the workers to fight for their rights and, in the process, changed history.Award-winning author Monica Brown and acclaimed illustrator Joe Cepeda join together to create this stunning tribute to two of the most influential people of the twentieth century."I love that this book introduces Dolores and Cesar as children and connects their early life experiences to the decisions they made as they grew up," commented reviewer Maria Ramos-Chertok in the blog "Latinxs in Kid Lit." "Given that I longed for bilingual children’s books when my two sons were growing up, I only wish I had known about this book earlier." She added that Side by Side offers opportunities to open discussions about work and career, feminism, and friendship, as well as a fresh perspective on history. Publishers Weekly Read more

  • Amazing!
Such a great book! it treats both Dolores and Chavez in the same way and like the title indicates: side by side they fight together. It is such a great introduction to civil rights activism and Latixs empowerment. I read it to my 1st-grade students and they all loved it, granted our actual school is named Cesar Chavez so they already loved him, but still it is really good, and helpful that it is bilingual. ... show more

  • I wish more books were written this way!
I teach social studies and have included Dolores Huerta into my kindergarten curriculum and Cesar Chavez into my 1st grade curriculum. Ms. Huerta was on the frontlines fighting for labor workers rights but was given an "assistant" role by misogynist storytellers .I appreciate her inclusion here as a full participant. I read this book to both grades, and then our Spanish teacher read it as well. I love the multilingual aspect and the kids did too. ... show more

  • Wonderful!
My toddler loves this book. Generally she loses interest in longer books but she loves this one. She had me read it several times within the first couple of days of having it. Well written and I love the English and Spanish. Highly recommend.

  • Lado A Lado
I bought it as a gift for three darling Mexican American/Native American girls. The 8 year old read it as part of her reading assignment for school and loved it. I had the pleasure of spending a day with Dolores Huerta recently when she visited Humboldt State University. What a wonderful woman she is. I plan to order additional copies of this book very soon. ... show more
