The stones are oversized which is helpful, and the set has the three stones that anyone would want for a basic set, plus a stone to level any grooves made in the sharpening stones. Coarse for a damaged blade, medium for general sharpening and a fine stone for finishing. I had no trouble with the stones slipping once I had aquired some technique. Each stone has a rubber gasket that locks it into the wooden base, and the base has a rubber matt on its bottom to keep it from moving too much. This is my first foray into the world of stone sharpening. I watched several YouTube how-to videos and this product specifically was compared to a more expensive glass backed stone (industry high quality standard) that is 5x more expensive. This product was shown to be reasonably comparable, though not as good as the most expensive stone on the market, as expected, but it wasn't far behind in quality. For a beginner like me, or a thrifty person, this proves how good of a value this stone is and that it is a good stone for someone who wants a functionally sharp knife for the kitchen. I was able to sharpen my knives (one of which had the tip dull to the point of a table knife) to razor sharpness and I was able to slice a piece of paper with just the weight of the knife quite easily when I was done. My knives cut like new (high quality wustoff knives that are now 10 years old) and I was able to learn the basics of the technique very quickly after an hour of watching youtube and practicing with my cheapest knife. I'm very satisfied with this product. For reference, I cook 4 days a week on average, from scratch, so i am constantly chopping something and I know what a good knife should feel like when it cuts through something.

The media could not be loaded. Awesome set of stones. They have a free angle guide inside the set of you email pictures of your order and the gift card; pretty cool extra bonus. The stones helped us bring our kitchen knives back to life. Even better than when we first bought them. The size of the stones in this set are a huge bonus, and well worth the price of this set. I have smaller stones, but, the increased surface area of these truly helps with efficiency of sharpening and variety of knives you can sharpen with ease. Definitely do your research on technique and form. Definitely soak the stones before use, about 10-15 minutes preferably, but a 5 minute soak at minimum if you're impatient. I would recommend doing a surface level (use the block provided or your own) before you begin sharpening for the first time to ensure you have a flat surface. Also recommend a surface level after each use. Personal tip: start with the lowest grit, whether or not your knife is decently sharp already. It really helps with the finished product. The only thing that would make this set better, in my opinion, would be the addition of a stropping block. Overall great set, great quality, and very effective.

somewhere during a recent move, I lost my hodgepodge of sharpening tools and loose whetstones, so I decided to look at getting a new set. and this set is amazing! It is full of large stones at three levels of courseness Plus a flattening stone and a bamboo base with no slip bottom to place your stones in wow sharpening. everything is absolute top quality, even the packaging is superb. is this set for beginners? Not exactly. If you know the basics on how to sharpen a knife or are an expert in this it is absolutely for you. If you are a beginner, then this set well provide you with everything you need to learn and keep your knives sharp for lifetime. Although you may want to purchase some of the blade guides available to hold your knife at the right angle while you’re learning the finer points of sharpening. r

I wish to state that i am not an expert to sharpening chisels. The 400, 1000, 4000 and 6000 stones worked great. I could not polish my chisels with the 8000 for a mirror finish. I had to pull out a Norton stone to polish the surface. That being said the set is well worth the money. I would spend extra for a 8000 stone for the final step. Again a great value.,

Needed to sharpen our kitchen knives and after watching a few videos felt confident in purchasing this item. Followed the instructions for preparing it for use and also bought the guide for the knife but ditched and found it very easy to freehand sharpen. The instructions were simple enough and was able to sharpen three large knives quickly. The base lays flat and doesn’t slide making it safe and secure. Would definitely recommend.

This kit arrived nicely packed in a well-designed case, perfect for storing the stones. I had 6 high-end knives (3 German (1 Wusthof Driezack, 2 Hoffritz) and 3 Japanese (2 Sugimoto, 1 Shun) that were in varying degrees of dullness. In addition, one of the Sugimotos had several minor nicks in the edge. The set didn’t come with any instructions, but there were plenty of great YouTube videos that taught me everything I needed to know. This being my first attempt at using sharpening stones, I started with the more robust German blades to get my technique down, then moved on to the more delicate Japanese knives. The three grits of 400, 1000, and 6000 provided a perfect solution to every blade condition I had to address. I also liked having 3 separate stones, rather than the more popular dual-grit stones. To sum up, in just over 3 hours, I had 6 like-new blades, all of which now passed the slice-through-paper test. Highly recommend this economical, practical sharpening set.

If you're new to wet stones, these are fun. Or if you sharpen a lot of tools and don't want to wear out you're more expensive stones on rough use blades these are nice. They will dish out with time but that's the character of all water stones. I keep mine submerged in a tub all the time, and they haven't degraded at all.
