  • Best quality stone at under $40 per stone. This set should cost twice what it does for the quality.
The stones are oversized which is helpful, and the set has the three stones that anyone would want for a basic set, plus a stone to level any grooves made in the sharpening stones. Coarse for a damaged blade, medium for general sharpening and a fine stone for finishing. I had no trouble with the stones slipping once I had aquired some technique. Each stone has a rubber gasket that locks it into the wooden base, and the base has a rubber matt on its bottom to keep it from moving too much. This is my first foray into the world of stone sharpening. I watched several YouTube how-to videos and this product specifically was compared to a more expensive glass backed stone (industry high quality standard) that is 5x more expensive. This product was shown to be reasonably comparable, though not as good as the most expensive stone on the market, as expected, but it wasn't far behind in quality. For a beginner like me, or a thrifty person, this proves how good of a value this stone is and that it is a good stone for someone who wants a functionally sharp knife for the kitchen. I was able to sharpen my knives (one of which had the tip dull to the point of a table knife) to razor sharpness and I was able to slice a piece of paper with just the weight of the knife quite easily when I was done. My knives cut like new (high quality wustoff knives that are now 10 years old) and I was able to learn the basics of the technique very quickly after an hour of watching youtube and practicing with my cheapest knife. I'm very satisfied with this product. For reference, I cook 4 days a week on average, from scratch, so i am constantly chopping something and I know what a good knife should feel like when it cuts through something. ... show more

  • Best Stones for the money I've found
Been sharpening knives for decades...this is the most versatile kit I've found with the best quality stones. Very pleased. I don't agree with some of the reviews I read before buying. My kit was properly marked and the stones are excellent. Quick note...be very careful with the white stone...it is very fine but also very soft. A heavy hand will bite into it. Take your time, and it will pay you back. ... show more

  • almost what I expected for the money, but they do a much better job than cheaper stones
On arrival, the tips of some corners were very slightly broken. This wasn't a major problem, as it's only very slight chipping, but it's a thing. The 6000 grit stone was slightly pitted on the surface, not enough to affect use, but again it's a thing, the 1000 grit stone is clearly cut a little wrong, it is slightly corrugated on one side, and a little convex on the other. It still did a decent job like that, as I didn't really notice until I'd started using it, but I'd be annoyed if I was trying for high precision and needed to flatten it that much out of the box, also it's really hard to see until there's slurry. I'm sure it'll flatten out in no time with a flattening stone. The biggest qualm I have is that they are not 1 inch thick. They're 3/4" thick. this is plenty big enough for value and I suspected from the pictures that it would be the case, but still not quite as advertised. The 400 grit stone took a little bit of use to actually start cutting properly. it came very smooth on top and didn't really bite in. luckily my first couple of knives didn't really need the 400 stone anyway. the 1000 stone had this issue too but to a lesser extent. the 6000 one cut well right away. once they were all going properly they cut quickly enough for the price: I'd expect better of a high-end stone for sure, but I'm satisfied with this performance for the money, and they do a fine job in the end. Certainly better than the cheap Chinese stones I had before (maybe some diminishing returns there already, but I'm happy) The stones appear to actually be the rating they say, unlike some cheaper ones. Apparently these are splash and go stones, not that it said that anywhere, but a short submersion didn't hurt them (so far, they aren't dry yet. The included nagura is really more a cleaning stone than a flattening stone: it'd need to be bigger to actually get them flat, but it saves buying one of those separately and it's clearly what's in the photos. The base fits snugly and the stones don't move in it, though it doesn't grip well on a wet Formica benchtop. I expect using less water will help prevent this issue and it grips very well to the dry bench. I'm not unhappy overall, but realistically if there's a next time I'll spend a little more and get some better stones. That's a reasonably big if though, they'll do the job for the foreseeable future. ... show more

  • Makes knives sharp!
When I ordered these sharpening stones, I did not realize that I was buying such a luxury kit! I have now used these stones to sharpen two knives, some garden shears, and to finish the edge on a hatchet. Everything worked perfectly. Up until now I only used a whetstone that I had purchased many years ago. I just could not make the knife fully sharp. Now I realize it is because of the inadequate whetstone. ... show more

  • they work great
the coarse grit seems to break down faster than the rest, which is weird. on sanding belts the coarse lasts the longest by far. but with these the blue and white both seems to last much longer than the green, which is the coarsest. they all are quite hard though, and dont break down very quickly. ive seen videos of people using the cheap ones and they fall apart shockingly fast. got my hand plane working beautifully. i use the ken onion work sharp for knives, but you cant really use them for chisels and plane blades. need a stone for those. ... show more
