  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Was initially concerned...
Style: SharkBite Size: 3/4 in.
Not gonna lie. When I first got these I was concerned about leaks and waking up to my basement flooding as I had never used them. I'm used to either brazing copper pipes or priming and gluing pvc tubing. I'm a bit of a control guy and when I moved into my house years ago had ripped out the horror that was the tubing entering my basement from the well pump.. put in a whole house filter, pressure tank, other, removable filters and carbon filters, water softener etc. After years of use the softener had given up and the mechanisms sprung leaks all over. I wanted to take that out and instead put in an iron removing filter as our sinks and toilets need constant scrubbing with some of our lighter clothes becoming "work on the car" items due to staining. I read a lot of reviews here and elsewhere about the sharkbite connectors and wound up ordering them.. heck, they were returning so why not? I cut cpvc to length and put connected everything with sharkbite elbows, reducers, and a valves. Once I slipped everything together, crossed my fingers and opened up the water. Hmm,.. so far so good but lets wait and see.. turned on the water throughout the house and watched everything pop and shake as air bled out of the system and pressurized to 70psi. Okay.. so far so good. Cleaned up and went upstairs to eat.. came back down checking for leaks... went to watch tv (The Boys-started slow but ROCKS)... wife and I took turns checking for leaks. Went to bed... got up a few times... and now it's been a few weeks. Not a drop of water and none of the pipes has tried to slip out as we have them all marked for this purpose. These things rock! One of the things I like best is that you can rotate the fittings (ie; the pipes can still move, rotate etc) without leaks which means it's all super forgiving if you get your lengths slightly off and stuff is not 100% straight and true.. it adjusts.. something PVC and Copper do NOT do... and I can also move stuff around a few inches if needed without cutting/de-brazing pipes etc. I'm a convert! ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Glue vs Brass
Style: SharkBite Size: 1/2 in.
For small example if used properly you can take a job that minimum 2hrs out of your day with glue, purple cloths stains and depending on the type of pipes you have requires this or that; to a job that's if installing only one to two and some knowledge how to use them as to many to be very simple to a 2-10min job giving room for obstacles to throw themselves at you. Brass ones aren't always cheap but in the long run last far longer then the plastic ones. I have a few of these installed on different locations. Never had to replace or adjust them once fitted. With shark bites however remember to have the required tool or knowledge to remove them without damages and they can be cleaned and reused. They don't fail where glue has in the past for my family as it can reach temperatures in Fahrenheit 110 and glue will at times fail when the temperature at night changes. Not that ever night gets cool because a cool-ish night is about 90s normal bases. But these hold up well even when our temperatures drop well below 0. ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Critical Design Flaw
Style: SharkBite Size: 1 in.
TL;DR: Plastic sleeve inside fittings isn't fixed in place and is poorly designed, causing a catastrophic failure when inserted improperly. I just completed installing two 90 degree elbows and a ball valve onto a length of 1" PEX the builder of my house left exposed in my garage. The loop was supposed to be for a water softener, however, as we do not need a water softener for our location (not sure what they were thinking, no one in our neighborhood uses one), it has been hanging out roughly 24" into my garage/workshop, which represented a significant hazard in my mind. In light of this, and having made a trip to the usual suspects only to be astounded at the $60+ special PEX wrench required to use the standard fittings and clamps, I decided on these as a cheaper and (hopefully) easier alternative as I only had a very small project in mind. Each fitting contains a small plastic "sleeve" that is used to further strengthen the pipe so as to ensure the "shark teeth" that clamp onto it do not deform the pipe and cause a leak. From the pictures, I assumed this sleeve was fixed in place - it is not. In fact, it's completely loose inside of each end of the fitting and relies on a VERY small lip to seat itself against the brass of the fitting. Predictably, on the first fitting, this small lip pushed right past its' brass mating surface on my first insertion attempt, causing the fitting to prematurely bottom out while engaging the teeth enough to make removal impossible. Thankfully, I was able to quickly cobble together a removal tool based on pictures of the plastic one sold by SharkBite online using a hole saw and piece of scrap plywood, but the damage had been done. The plastic insert was mangled and badly bent, rendering the $16 fitting unusable and necessitating an emergency run to Lowes to purchase an overpriced replacement. Installing the remainder of the valves was a painful process as I fiddled with the plastic sleeve to make sure it was aligned before pushing the fitting home, but, not before saying a prayer to all that is holy that the dang thing would go on correctly. Now, having spent as much as if I would have just bought the daggun' tool in the first place, and having needlessly sweated and cussed enough to make my neighbors think far less of me, I wish I had just spent the money on the right tool for the job in the first place and heeded my gut when it told me the SharkBite fittings were just too good to be true. ... show more

Trying to solder wet plumbing is really hard to do properly and using a torch runs the risk of setting your house on fire. These fittings solve those problems. The fittings are well made and easy to use, just make sure to follow directions. A clean cut (don't use a hack saw!) and a clean pipe is vital to prevent leaks. I watched some videos on-line to avoid making mistakes. The tools that they sell for de-burring the cut, marking the installation depth, and undoing the fitting if necessary don't cost very much and I highly recommend that you buy them. ... show more
