    • Not my Shang-Chi
Not my Shang-Chi. Retcon. You see, I grew up with Powerman and Iron Fist and had my run-ins with Shang-Chi ... you know, the son of Fu Manchu. This isn't him. This isn't my Shang-Chi. This is some other guy. It was a good movie in it's own right, but it isn't my Shang-chi ... I think I've made that clear enough now. Both Marvel and DC have seen retcons over the years. Really there was a retcon between the Golden Age and Silver Age of comics. I don't know. Retcons every 25-50 years is one thing. Retcon-ing every couple of years ... it's getting out of hand. Entire universes getting torn apart. Now they are killing of 50% of the universe in one movie ... and recon-ing reality in the next. This is only part of that. A Retcon. Just because it is a different world doesn't mean it is a bad one. I mean I really have no idea what has been going on in Marvel comics for the most part in over 20 years. I have no idea what Shang-chi is like now ... in print. This was a ride from ho-hum life to crazy fantasy trip. Heroes journey? Not much of path down into darkness ... some ... but not to much really unless you count the flash backs. Same goes for "is it a kung fu movie" .... I guess if you have read any of my martial arts/wuxia movie reviews you probably knew that was coming. Yes. This is a kung fu movie ... the main character does have training sequence to show them learning their skills ... more than one in fact. Training sequences for more than one main/support characters. And training sequences in general. However, at the same time, there is no actual enduring practice of any special art/technique. Very superficial when it comes to training. A rock skipping on the surface. There is no deep dive into the power within Shang-chi ... there is instead a lot of really good CGI. It gets very GI Joe in some places, but COBRA agents aren't able to jump out of submarines that have been blown out of the water wearing parachutes so they can drift down safely to the water or nearby islands. Spoiler alert! If you are going to kill off 50% of the universe, people are dying in the process. These deaths don't have the impact of the original animated Transformers movie starring Orson Welles, Leonard Nimoy, and Eric Idle. I can't really say any more without any real spoilers. Best way to end this is to say that if you were a fan of the original Shang-Chi from 1970's this movie is going to take you places with the character that you would never figure it was going to go ... and pretty much in an entirely different world .... oh, did I mention that "He's not my Shang-Chi"? ... show more

    • Father tries to amend for his past in a story that mixes Kung Fu Tai Chi & Chinese mythology
Shang Chi is one of the best recent releases by Marvel. The story is about fatherhood, family and obligations. It has a rich story which mixes the characters of Shang Chi/Simu Liu and The Mandarin Xu Wenwu/Tony Leung with Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Chinese mythology. The plot focuses upon Xu Wenwu who was a villain who didn’t know how to be a proper father to his two children Shang Chi and Xu Xialing/Menger Zhang. After he lost his wife Leiko Wu/Fala Chen everything fell apart but then he thought he could put the pieces of the puzzle back together. His dilemma actually drives the story with Shang Chi trying to figure it out. Chinese martial arts plays a large role in the film. Wenwu for instance uses Kung Fu with the fist while his wife Leiko used Tai Chi with the open hand. The conflict between the two styles is played out within Shang Chi who was taught by his father but must learn his mother’s style in order to overcome his foes. That brings up the action sequences. I thought they were all well done starting with the fight in a San Francisco Muni bus. Some have complained the big climax scene was a bit too much but I thought it just embraced Chinese mythology. Speaking of which there are a bunch of Chinese creates featured in the film. That’s hinted at in the opening as a young Shang Chi is given an origami dragon by his mother. Shang Chi has a good dose of comedy with Awkwafina as Shang’s best friend. The two have all kinds of hijinks like going to Karaoke with Wong/Benedict Wong from Doctor Strange. The mixing of comedy, drama and action has always been a winning combination for the best of Marvel’s movies. As far as Marvel trivia, the Marvel Cinematic Universe already used The Mandarin played by Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 2 but he was a front for the real bad guy. Now Xu Wenwu retakes his name. One of Wu’s henchmen is Razor Fist/Florian Munteanu who was one of Shang Chi’s major opponents in the comics. Leiko was also a girlfriend of Shang in the original Marvel series not his mother. There’s also a guest appearance by the Abomination who was first seen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. ... show more

    • Not Bruce Lee, but still good
I remember the Master of Kung Fu being a comic book version of Bruce Lee. This version of Shang-Chi isn't. That said, it's a very good action movie with Ben Kingsley as comic relief. Michelle Yeoh, who's always good, showed up about midway through the movie. Awkwafina played Shang-Chi's girlfriend & did I good job. I read comments that said she was annoying, but I didn't feel that at all. The CGI was good, & the movie kept my interest. I enjoyed it, even though Simu Liu didn't look like Bruce Lee. ... show more

My partner and I really liked this movie. At first, I didn't know if she would like it but she really enjoyed it and loved the soundtrack.
