This mattress can be used the same day you buy it. It rises up to its full size as soon as you get it out the box. It is light enough weight to handle and get on the bed frame. There was no horrible "plastic" odor that most foam mattress from "Mart" stores have. No more airing the mattress out on the porch for a week to get rid of the smell. The Serta was a little more expensive but in this case you DO get what you pay for. The only downside of this mattress is the way it's packed. I guess it's hard to get a mattress so small to ship and it is wrapped and wrapped and wrapped in some kind of shrink wrap. They do have a razor tool in the box and directions. Unfortunately, they were in the bottom of the box under the mattress that we were trying to unwrap. It took a while, but it was worth it. This mattress is so comfy! We ordered it for our new RV and slept on it for the first time last night. Me and my husband both got the best nights sleep we have had in a very long time. I don't know if these flaws are typical or just on the mattress I received. The mattress slopes from the center down to the edges and the edges are rounded like an old used mattress. Makes it difficult to get a comfortable position and use.

...bed in a box. The first, a hybrid, coil/foam, with a brand name I'd never heard of. This, an all foam mattress, and in a box 2/3 the size of the other (also queen size) mattress, this being from Serta, a name that is familiar. Both receive a four star overall rating from me. Starting from the beginning, unwrapping. Inside the box was the mattress rolled up in brown paper, a plastic cutter rattling around and a card stock instruction leaflet. The brown paper slightly sticks to itself and keeps the mattress rolled up, so don't take it off until you are ready for the mattress to begin unrolling a bit. After tearing off the brown paper, the mattress was double wrapped in plastic. The outer layer a thin, cling like wrap, which unrolled like the brown paper. I couldn't tell that's what was going on at first, really all I could see was plastic. I eventually got a clue and unrolled that outer layer instead of trying to use the cutter on that outer layer of plastic. Finally the mattress was contained in a thick bag; also plastic; the end of the bag was already ripped open; not by me. At that point, the little cutter included was easy and appropriate to use to remove the final layer of packaging. The bed began to take shape and was able to lay out easily. I was able to move it and position it by myself, whereas the other one with the inner springs required help to move and position (heavier). The corners take a while to become proper corners; we are advised in the instructions, basically to leave them alone and let them "come to" in their own time. At this point, I'm not sure if this will be our nightly mattress or the guest room mattress, which is used 3x a week. Of the two bed in a box's I've received so far, this is what they both have in common: Ticking; (the heavy outer layer of fabric). It's not going to be as heavy, or luxurious looking or feeling as a "flat from the furniture store" mattress. The "ticking" fabric of this one, is a stretchy, not overly thick fabric. Nice looking print, but you'll want to use a mattress pad/cover (Okay, *I'll* want to use a mattress cover). Handles: No handles; for a mattress only, at this price point, I'm disappointed that Serta didn't include handles. Single sided: I used to sell mattresses; back then 95% of mattresses were double sided; you would flip them every so often to extend the wear and sort of even out some of the "depressions" that happen from larger body parts. Now, 95% of mattresses, including this one, are single sided. You can rotate them to extend wear, but the way the layers are designed, you can't really flip them and have the intended sleep/comfort experience. Sides/edges: If you like to put your socks on sitting on the edge of the bed, well, there is not that same level of strength or rigidity that a "flat from the furniture store" mattress has. There is no steel reinforcement going around the edges. You'll have to sit yourself several inches in. The feel; well I was really tired from a swim workout and getting up at 4 a.m. and decided to lay down on this for an extended period (a nap). What I can tell you is that I easily fell asleep and stayed that way for longer than you are supposed to for an afternoon nap. To me, it is comfortable, firm; indeed, "medium" firm. 3 days a week Misses Shops too much has a very early work shift and gets up a 3:45am. On those days she sleeps in the guest room. She is 5'2" 120 pounds. I am 5'10" 165 pounds. For both of us, the firmness/comfort level feels good; almost a bit firm. If I were to use it nightly, I'd add a gel topper for a more plush sleep experience. Her thoughts having slept on this for full nights are that it is comfortable, but she does change position a few or more times per night; that is not unusual for her; she does so on every bed we've ever had. For me, Mister Shops Too Much, who could also be known as Mister Frugal, and a with the history of selling mattresses, I'm always on the search for the best value (in all things) quality, price, features. While I recognize the name, if I were not receiving this as a Vine reviewer, I would do a more exhaustive search/shop, when buying a mattress. I think the price point for this is a bit high and based more on the name (Serta) and all of their marketing and advertising, not necessarily because it is the best mattress you can get for $629.00. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it isn't, I'm saying I would do my due diligence and assure there wasn't something as good for less money, or better for the same price. Born shopper, what can I say. Before mattresses, I also used to sell shoes. There was a saying in selling both mattresses and shoes, and that was: You spend 1/3 of your life in bed and 1/3 of your life in your shoes, so get good shoes and a good bed (mattress). I don't want to get out of bed anymore and I've noticed I'm spending much more time in bed than I ever did, either reading there or watching TV. I fall asleep much quicker on this mattress, and I never wake up stiff or with aches and pains. I love the gel memory foam, it's the exact thickness I desire and if you want it a little softer, like I do, I added a 2 inch foam topper to make it extra heavenly and add some protection to the mattress from my pups. It's firm around the sides too, I like that it keeps it's form much better than my old memory foam bed. I couldn't believe how small they were able to get it for shipping, the box is nothing like the huge ones most come in. Give it a good day or two to expand fully before you sleep on it.
