Description

These Self Supporting Pyrometric Cones are used on a shelf, inside a kiln, to determine when a firing is complete, if the kiln provided enough heat or if there was a problem during firing. This style of cone does not require a cone holder. These Orton Cones are made from carefully controlled compositions so that they bend in a repeatable manner over a very small temperature range. When the cone tip sags and reaches a point level with the base it indicates a proper firing. Cones have been used in ceramic firings for more than 100 years and Orton has the history and experience to provide the very best product. The number of this cone is 06 which bends at an approximate temperature of 1873 degrees fahrenheit depending on firing conditions.

  • Works great, but expect breakage.
These cones work great in the kiln, but expect several of them to break before use. A couple always arrive broken, and then others break when you try to split them apart. I'd be more upset, but that kinda just seems par for the course.

  • Unhappy ceramacist
This product appeared to be deliberately destroyed or was scrap merchandise. Was very shocked at the condition of the items.

  • Pairs stuck together; singleton broken and useless
This is my first purchase of self-standing cones and may be my last. The description did not show that they come as pairs, joined along their length in such a way that even the manufacture isn't able to pry them apart without breaking them into small pieces. I got 24 cones and one set of crumbs, which were not broken in transit, but were put in the box like that. Shabby. I realized that I will still need a support of clay under the cones, to stop them melting and sticking to the shelf. So pinching a bit of clay around ordinary cones is actually a better solution. Packaging is no longer in Vermiculite, which I would have recycled into my garden, but is now sheets of foam. ... show more
