  • Better than a textbook: Exactly what you need and nothing you don't
I have read at least three speech textbooks in my education, not including this one. Because this isn't a textbook. It's written for busy professionals who want to speak and present better. And it's better than those textbooks. Really, much of it is actually a clever organization method that makes talks far better and far more clear. It helps you help your audience. Frankly, speech textbooks - even good ones - give you a whole lot you don't need and don't want. This book gives you exactly what you need to know and nothing you don't. And it works. It really, really works. Whether you're a professor, a student, a professional, a homeschooler, or anyone else who is either delivering speeches or teaching speech, you should give Secrets of Dynamic Communications a serious look before you waste time on anything else. Now, one caveat that I don't think the title makes clear: It is a book on giving talks and speeches. This isn't a general communications book that will help you understand how to effectively apologize, have difficult conversations, or talk with your boss. It's a speech book, and it's a really good one that I plan to keep in my (virtual) library. In fact, it's one that I wish I had gotten the physical copy. ... show more

  • Good, practical read
Good advice and reminders of things you may have forgotten or dismissed in the past. As a seasoned speaker who speaks and teaches multiple times a week, even I found things I can (and should) use. You will, too.

  • Okay For a Presentations...not for Preaching
I was assigned this book for a class that I took on preaching. This book is not written for that and if it was....it grossly misses the mark. The book would be great for some one giving presentations on differing topics, but not on preaching. The book and the included worksheets would strong arm the pastor into doing topical presentations and not expository exegesis (preaching). This is not a hit on the book, it would be great for a speech class, but not for a class on preaching. It lacks relevancy to preaching except in that the author almost became a pastor (inadequate) and that he mentions preaching only in passing. However, I do think the book is a decent book for speeches or presentations. It gives a good outline for those practices and has many practical application tips. I do though, think that the author could have toned down the personal stories a bit. Though some are amusing and relevant, they simply seem to dominate some of the chapters and I found myself getting bored of them. and even skipping them towards the end. ... show more
