Now, I know everyone that uses HDDs or technology components in general always has their favorite brands. For large capacity HDDs, mine is Seagate. I have owned many Seagate HDDs since I began using large capacity storage in 2012. In this time all span, only 1 of those many drives has failed - after each having been used heavily for both reads and writes. I recently ran out of storage space on my NAS (Ironwolf Pro HDDs) and needed to buy new, larger capacity drives. In my exploration of drives, I searched through product spec listings of other companies, but ended up coming back to Seagate. In my understanding, the Exos drives differ from Ironwolf drives in that the Exos drives are designed to be run 24/7, which is how I run my NAS. The warranties on my drives were all valid and had the full amount of time under warranty possible. This drive runs HOT if you are writing a lot of data to it, I had to keep a fan on it while I was doing stress-testing... I suppose its to be expected from an enterprise drive designed to go in a data center with good airflow, but its a little concerning. These drives are rated to up to 60c though, so it should be okay. Also, I am noticing very high seek and read error rates in SMART data.. Cursory research shows this may be normal for Seagate drives? This is my first Seagate so I'm not sure, but there are 0 uncorrectable errors, so I think it should be fine. Since this is an enterprise drive, you may want to disable TLER/ERC if using in a desktop as this is a feature intended for RAID arrays not desktop use, the command on linux is 'smartctl -l scterc,0,0 /dev/sdX', replacing X with drive location, not sure what it is on windows but it should be similar except using windows syntax for drive location. This drive supports disabling TLER/ERC, which I was worried about, so if anyone has similar concerns, this drive supports the command. With TLER disabled there is really no reason not to use this drive, I'm not sure yet if the setting persists after reboot but that should be an easy fix if it doesn't, make sure to check though. Drive's speed is acceptable, pretty good actually. Oh, also, this drive is very quiet, I was very concerned reading all the reviews saying the drive was loud and I was basically expecting an explosion when it spun up, lol. But it is pretty much totally quiet, even writing I can barely hear it. Maybe if it was like 6 inches away from you it might be noticeable. I can't hear a thing in my case which is 3 feet from me. Spin-up is a bit noisy but after that it is fine. No more noisy than any other drive I've had. Note that the drive I got was manufactured in 2017 (darn resellers) maybe newer models are different, but I doubt it. Despite DOM 2017 the drive I got is running the latest firmware, which is nice. All in all, supposing nothing goes wrong in the future, these drives can't be beat for the price point and value they offer. Just make sure to give it some good airflow if you are writing a lot of data at once, and disable TLER for desktop use. EDIT: depending on workload this thing can indeed get quite noisy. I didn't notice it at all writing random data to disk for testing, but when automated backups run this thing churns out some serious noise. I assume this is the head(s) accessing random parts of disk as opposed to just contiguous writes. Still works good for a data drive that doesn't get much access, opening videos/music/etc is pretty much silent, but for heavy-access tasks you will want a ssd because this drive could 'drive' a person crazy. ... show more

    • Great product - tweak needed for Windows 11

I purchased one of these some time ago, and just now purchased another to install in a MSI 12TD-620US desktop. It works great. I see a lot of people have complained about the noise with this drive. The MSI desktop is whisper quiet. I don't think I have had a system this quiet before, so I was concerned about putting in a drive that was reported to be noisy. The previous drive I purchased is not noisy, and I am delighted to report that this one is also not noisy. One heads up - The Exos drive had great power management because it is essentially intended for servers. By default it parks the heads after 2 minutes idle, slows the rpm after 10 min idle, and spins down after 15 minutes idle. Saving power in a server farm is important. Windows 11 loves to ping the hard drives every 2 or 3 minutes, even if there is no pagefile on the disk. With Windows constantly waking up the drive this defeats the power management and gets annoying with constant windows notifications that it has woken up a device. I recommend tweaking the EXOS power management using the SeaChest_PowerControl to change or disable the advanced EXOS power management. This is a bit complex for novices, but search for "Exos power management Windows 11 SeaChest_PowerControl" and you will find articles explaining what needs to be done. I was concerned about buying HDDs from an Amazon merchant because I've heard of people getting OEM drives (with NO warranty) when they expected a drive with the full manufacturer's warranty. In this case I'm happy to report that those fears were unfounded! I checked the serial number on Seagate's website and it reported the full 5-year warranty as expected. I ordered two drives from MegaRetailStore - shipped by Amazon. Received them and checked on the Seagate warranty site. Both drives were Retail Drives with full 5 year warranty. Perfect. (Was worried that they were OEM drives) I would trust them and buy from them again. Thanks from Texas.
