The quality of this adapter is nice on the outside. It's slim, charges, outputs to HDMI, and has the additional USB ports. However, I rate this product as a 3 star because it intermittently blacks out which is extremely annoying. It does this on both of my mac OS and Windows machines.

    • The HDMI port causes flickering

As other reviews have mentioned, the HDMI port connected to a monitor stops working well. I don't remember how long it worked but it wasn't that long. Now almost every time the monitor connected to the HDMI port starts flickering or goes black for a few seconds. You have to move the cable 'til that stops the flickering and don't touch it even slightly after that. I just accidentally touched it now and the monitor is back to flickering.     • A Must Have With the New Mac Laptops

I purchased this adapter after reading a recommendation by someone that rather than buying several different adapters for various purposes that this one would take care of most of my needs. I had purchased a new Mac laptop and discovered that I was unable to use any of my other electronic that used USB and/or HDMI ports. My two main needs were an HDMI port so that I could use my laptop with a television to project various things and to print documents through my printers. This adapter takes care of both of these needs and has been working well for several months. I highly recommend it for anyone buying a new Mac Laptop with the new USB - C port. Firstly, it's very nicely made, not heavy but feels solid. Made of all aluminum, nicely done Satechi. Now onto my tests and reasoning for the 3 stars. Works perfectly with obviously the official apple charger, but also with the Anker Premium 5-Port 60W USB Wall Charger PowerPort+ 5 USB-C with Power Delivery for Apple MacBook. Great! Other docks don't seem to support the Anker charger but this does. My USB flash drives seem to work fine, have not tried any mechanical usb drives, but i don't see a problem with power being an issue. The ports give 1amp each. Also on my Macbook 2015 in system information shows the Hub with a Via chipset, one port is listed as USB2, 1amp power available, and the other as a USB3 with 1.8amp available for charging. I did not try any big transfers to check speeds rated. Now onto the sad part, the hub does not seem to want to work with my Dell LCD screen. It's a 17inch screen connected via a DVI to HDMI cable. The official Apple HDMI USB Dongle detects the display and works perfectly. But the Satechi one shows the display in power save mode. I did try a OWC USB-C dock that was 4 times the cost of this hub and the OWC one would flash the display blue and black making it unusable. It's strange that the Apple one works yet no other dock can work with my simple setup. In contact with Satachi support, recommended i download and install a DisplayLink driver. Sadly did not help. I did notice a lag also when restarting and booting up the machine, about 20 seconds lag, seems unplugging the hub resolves that issue. Support decided i had received a hub with a faulty chipset and have agreed to replace. Great Service!!! Will update my rating once i get to try the replacement. Update: Received the replacement hub very quickly (superb customer service Satechi!). Tested today and found that maybe i have a bad DVI to HDMI cable as it does not work with the Satchi hub at all. Works with my 32inch Samsung TV however using pure HDMI to HDMI. The Apple Digital-AV Adapter works flawlessly with everything i have tried. I've decided to keep the Satechi hub as having 2 USB ports is handy, i love how it's made unlike the Apple one, and supports 3rd party chargers. ... show more

I’m using this on my 2020 MacBook Air. Works great. I use one Thunderbolt 3 port for my external ssd, and the other for this Satechi adapter. I use the USB C port for the MacBook’s plug adapter (as it’s only used for pass-through power and not data transfer). The two USB A ports I use for thumb drives, charging my Bluetooth headphones, or syncing my iPad or iPhone (can’t use the USB A ports to charge the iPad or iPhone, but if they are at least 80%, you can transfer data). Other’s have noted that the USB A ports are a pretty tight fit, but I think the more you use them, the less that will be an issue. But for the time being, it’s a little difficult getting my Samsung Ultra Fit out. The HDMI port I use to hook up to my TV so I can watch Apple TV+ without having to pay $150-$200 for the Apple TV device. I don’t use 4K so 1080p at 60hz is fine by me. If you line out to a TV or external monitor, it’s best to set it up as a second monitor. Don’t mirror the image. Drag whatever program you want out to the second screen and there you go. If you attach a USB mouse or external trackpad to the Satechi hub, you can shut your MacBook and just use manage what’s on the second monitor. Anyway, definitely a worthwhile purchase. ... show more
