  • great for emergency use... keep in my car trunk
well built, multiple tools, packs small and made well.. what is not to like?

  • Best Bang for the Buck
Solidly made, assembles logically and securely and is nicely priced. Was surprised to find there was a fire starter rod that was not mentioned in the description. Some reviewers thought the edge of the shovel and the knife could be sharper; but, the manufacturer probably opted for and edge that would not nick easily...if you want it sharper, you can sharpen it further; but, this is a last-ditch piece of kit and most likely you have a sharper knife on you already. You can get better "survival shovels"; but, you would have to pay much more. At this price point, this is a well-made kit that comes with a good carrying case. ... show more

  • ~ ALL Metal, 12 Functions, Strong and Sturdy, Folds Very Small, Great Tool ~ Impressed! ~
This all-metal folding survival shovel set is pretty much the bee's knees. When we purchased our Jeep, our previous camping shovel got lost in the transfer somehow and did not make it in. Been needing to replace it for some time. This survival shovel is heads above what we previously had. With 12 functions, this does about any camping/4-wheeling chore you could need to take care of. I like that it is completely made of metal for strength, sturdiness, and reliability. The case is great, a place for everything and everything in its place. Our case did arrive with a tear along an inside seam (see photo). I like that the shovel blade itself has a nice cover inside the main cover for safety and keeping the shovel/blades sharp and functioning their best. The small size of the case makes it easy to fit in our vehicle. There is one con and that is there are no included instructions, although I believe I've got it all sorted out. Would definitely be a plus to have information on that included. This would make an amazing gift and comes in a nice box for gift-giving. We are more than pleased to have this in the back of our Jeep at all times. We are able to feel much safer in our adventures! ... show more

  • Almost perfect, but one flaw for me
Sturdy, compact, sharp and effective in many terrains. The only thing is that the very end of the handle is an aggressive pointy metal edge. When I shovel hard, I at times grab there, forgetting about that, hit the ground hard, and hurt my hand. So I removed it, had to remove all the accessories in the tube too. Which makes the shovel much less versatile. But to be honest, I don't need that versatility. It's a shovel and all the other stuff it can do, it does not do them well enough to justify. ... show more

  • Packs up much smaller than expected, more function in less complexity than predicted
It works very well for what I got it for - which is an emergency shovel for snowstorms to keep in the car, since the little miniature plastic ones that they sell at service stations are too small and fragile, and a large metal garden shovel would take up too much space in the back of the car. I also do a lot of camping, and I can DEFINITELY see this taking up a lot of the slack currently done by a variety of other tools when i am camping or backpacking. All firewood needs should be taken care of by the axe and saw segments - any situation where a person needs to be straight up splitting enormous logs with a wedge axe for firewood rather than simply gathering and cutting small pieces and using an axe or saw like this to gather dry branches from fallen trees is less "camping" and more "actually living in the woods." The flatness of the axe would make splitting wood more difficult than any axe with a wedge, but if necessary one could make do still. I was positively surprised by the sharpness on arrival - the axe blade, saw teeth, and knife were all well sharpened. I anticipated needing to sharpen them myself but it seems like that will not be necessary until i have used it a bit. This is going to sound counter-intuitive, but I am glad that it is as short as it is fully assembled, as well. Most everything needed to be done with it can be easily accomplished at its maximum length (many things, such as axe-chopping or shoveling, would actually be more difficult if it were longer). About the only task I can really think of that would truly, gtreatly benefit from the length of an additional segment would be the "hoe" configuration, and I don't do much gardening, so simply not having to carry around an extra, pointless, not particularly HEAVY but not WEIGHTLESS either, segment of handle. I suppose using the knife on the end for an ambitious individual who wants to attempt spearfishing with a METAL spear would be another activity that would benefit from the extra length. or practically any situation where you are using the tool as a defensive implement (whether in spear, axe, or shovel style) would ALSO benefit from extra range, but like... it is not a weapon, it is not built to fend off wild animals, and if other people are attacking you just HAVING a tool like this (as opposed to a stick, rock, or pocket knife) might be an advantage of some sort but let's face facts: you have MUCH bigger problems than it being half a foot shorter than you'd like. So it's the correct length for all of the things it is actually FOR, and slightly shorter than possibly desired for all sorts of uses I wouldn't recommend trying anyway. I have been showing it off to my buddies who are also into camping liike I am that kid on the block who got a NES, and if that is not a good enough endorsement for anyone who remembers the NES - or if you don't know what an NES is - then we weren't really on the same wavelength anyway? IDK WHAT TO TELL YOU except... if you were in the wilderness, no possessions but the green tunic on your back and you entered a nearby cave, and the man inside gave you this shovel and said only, "IT'S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE. TAKE THIS." Never saying a single other word, forcing you to go alone (unless you are the sort of protagonist who talks with shovels - i don't judge) PROBABLY because the old guy feels safe in his barren, two-torch and no bed cave, safer than he would traversing those wilderness areas anyway... What I am saying is you would be grateful to that nameless, cryptic old dude for giving you this awesome shovel. It can dig holes, chop brush and wood, do some minor sawing, and it is most likely PRETTY DECENT at fighting off skeletons and bats and moblins. ... show more

  • It's in my truck for good
I have run this shovel/multitool through the paces and here are my experiences: I was actually shocked at how well it's built. I thought it would be some flimsy piece of trash, but it is not. The spade end is not some 1/16th inch sheet metal, it is a hardy piece of steel that can dig as a shovel and as an entrenching tool. The Ax side of it will cut through wood, I chopped through 2" pieces of wood with it. I was giving this thing full swings, that usually will break light weight entrenching tools, and this tool didn't even flinch. I will say it needs to be sharper and I will sharpen mine, but it works well out of the box. I like that it breaks down into a small pouch, it doesn't take up a lot of space in my truck, would I carry it in a back pack, NO. Too heavy and doesn't have enough use for me while hiking. The ferorod will start a fire, I was able to do so on my 3rd pull, the plastic took 2 pulls to peal off. The saws are not useful to be honest. Carry better tools for this with you, no more to say on that. So, why did I give it 5 stars, because compared to the competition it's way above and beyond them. If you need to dig out of sand, snow, mud, or muck, and have the ability to stay overnight and build a fire, this is the tool for you to have in your truck. Just my thoughts on it. ... show more
