  • Darth Vader's Stereo
This amp's aesthetics are brutal in a good way. It's a trapezoidal shape with considerable weight and thickness to its shell. It would blend in quite well with a Sith Lord's interior decor. It does not waste any space or resources with things like: buttons, color(aside from the faint blue glow), or curves. The A4 feels like an exercise in utilitarian design which is exactly why it was so attractive to me. Browsing Sabaj's website, I could tell considerable thought went into this unit's performance and internal circuitry. The sound quality is very clear to my ear. Coming from an Audioengine N22 it feels a bit less punchy and more refined/clean. I connected a modest pair 20W 4Ohm bookshelf speakers and the sound is exceptionally defined with amazing stereo separation. I plugged in a new pair of AKG K240's and was not disappointed at all. The headphone amp sounds very neutral and balanced with plenty of power on tap to drive these 55Ohm headphones to their limit. Background hiss or noise is nonexistant which is a huge relief coming from a noisy gaming grade headphone amp. This unit was the only one at its price point that packed this many features into one package, and I'm happy to say Sabaj did not skimp on the quality of the internal components to get to this price point. It's hard to find a single problem with this amp aside from the controls. They are not illuminated nor are they tactile, so operating this unit in the dark requires a few tries. Again, tactile controls are not something a Sith Lord would worry about so maybe I'm not the target audience here. All in all, I hadn't planned on spending this much for a headphone amp but now that I have it I can safely call this one of Amazon's hidden gems. Update 10/25/2018: Still pleased with it overall, but a couple gripes have surfaced recently. (1) Unit played a VERY loud, alarming static sound that didn't stop until the USB was unplugged. This happened connected to my laptop while coming out of sleep with the A4 powered on. Had to unplug USB cable to get it to stop. Could have been a USB transmission error on my laptop though as it has only happened once.(2) I can also confirm what another reviewer stated about noise on the analog input. It is not significant but it's there. The digital inputs are still dead silent in terms of noise floor (with the exception of the "alarm" sound it has played once). ... show more

  • Make sure you know how to set up, and what you’re getting
Product works perfectly and I have not found a problem with it thus far, however when I set it up I made a mistake and it hurt my ears very much, other than that, nothing wrong with the product itself, and it feels like a very quality product too, everything works as shown, and it feels like something I would have bought for a higher price. Good sound quality, and great value for the price. ... show more

  • I'm pretty happy with it
I bought this to drive a pair of Pioneer BS22's for my bedroom. I had some reservations because I have used Class D amps in the past and wasn't really all that impressed with them other than that such a small unit could drive such large speakers, but the sound quality was lacking. I'm happy to report that this unit, somehow, manages to drive the speakers pretty well. Without doing a whole lot of real thorough testing it's hard to say whether this performs as well as say the Yamaha A-S500 I have downstairs in my living room, which is by no means top of the line, but it feels close. The speakers moved from one room to another so I never got a great A:B comparison... The bluetooth works reasonably well when paired with my 1st gen Pixel, it does cut out a tiny bit here and there and the range is not great, even with the antenna screwed on and pointed straight up. Since the unit's ability to drive a speaker so cleanly is so... able, it's very easy to notice the limitations of the bluetooth codec; using a Chromecast Audio over optical provides a HUGELY improved sound with "fewer wrinkles" if that makes sense. The tiny screen that's better suited on the side of an e-cig is something of a cruel joke, as are the capacitive touch-buttons. Since I'm a veteran gadget nerd, as is likely anyone who would be looking to pick one of these units up, figuring the thing out is not all that difficult. I like that it's rather intuitive to operate, but navigating it from the remote is pretty frustrating: direct line of sight is required since the IR receiver is tucked behind the aluminum front, so it's got a very narrow field of view. This was something Apple kicked ass at, making devices with IR that work more like RF, where it would always manage to pick up the signal no matter how/where the remote was pointed. Not the case for this and many other products. I tried out the analog inputs with a lower-tier portable Minidisc player that lacks an optical output, and it sounds OK. It has enough resolution as an amp to hear the limitations of the recordings I made from vinyl records and there's no analog hiss or noise when there is no signal present that I was able to hear. I guess if I turned the unit all the way up and stuck my ear on the speaker with nothing playing I might hear something, but that's understandable. I have not yet tried out the headphone amp, but I like that you can leave headphones plugged in and choose via the menu whether you want sound routed to the speakers or headphones, vs having it sense the 'phones and direct sound there automatically. So, of the few units out there at about this price, I figure they're probably all about the same guts with different cases and form factors. Sabaj, SMSL, whatever. Chi-Fi works well for my needs and my budget and will hopefully last years and years. ... show more
