    • Top Notch Receiver Since Firmware Updates
I am updating my review to reflect how perfect this unit now is thanks to firmware updates. I am including the original issues in case you get a unit that is not up to date and to also address some other issues and fixes that may affect its use. Here are the issues I have encountered: 1. The most glaring issue is that the integrated Amazon Music and Tidal support are pretty bad at the moment. Hopefully they will fix it, but right now through the app, you cannot access your own Amazon music library (no saved playlists, artists, albums, or songs). You must search using a terrible interface. Luckily, you can instead use an echo device to tell it what to play from your own Amazon library, so at least there is a workaround for that, but going through an echo device limits you to HD/CD quality, no Ultra HD/Master quality, so you are not taking full advantage of 24 bit audio for those who have the right speakers that allow you to hear the subtle "sparkly" difference in certain (albeit limited) tracks. Tidal also doesn't allow you to access your own saved playlists, but you can at least access your saved artists, but Echo support for Tidal is simply awful, so I wouldn't really recommend this unit for Tidal use at the moment if using Alexa voice controls. Amazon HD and Tidal HiFi are my current primary sources for lossless and CD quality music, so I really hope they improve support, as they do sound absolutely excellent being directly supported. UPDATE: As of Dec 2022, you can now access your Amazon music library via the Heos app, which was the final step in making this a truly perfect receiver. If you have a large library, scrolling through the artists or songs is a bit clunky since it doesn't pre-load the whole list at once, and you can not jump to specific letters of the alphabet, but other than that, the updated Amazon music support in the app is excellent. 2. Related to the above lackluster implementation of streaming music service is the occassionaly extremely poor quality of the WiFi. This unit is very tempermental, and at times, it just continuously drops the streaming connection. It errors out, goes to next song, plays for a bit, errors out goes to next song. I benchmark the WiFi from my phone standing right next to the receiver and get 300+ mbps. I stream Amazon HD from the phone over Bluetooth to test, and there is no problem. Go back to the receiver directly streaming, and it gets errors. It seems to go away after the unit has been powered down for the day and started fresh another time. UPDATE: It turns out that this a actually an Amazon Echo issue, not a Denon issue. Apparrently echo devices just fail to properly stream music over time and need to be replaced with newer generation devices. This has now happened with two echo dots of mine. I didnt realize that this unit is not like my Onkyo units where the streaming is done through the receiver itself. With the Denon, the streaming is actually done through the echo device and it just displays what is playing on the screen, which is only a small step up from a regular old Bluetooth connection. You can still control some basic receiver functions via voice commands as well, but that will also require a separate echo device, unlike something like Sonos speakers that have Alexa more fully integrated into the device. 2. This one also really bugs me - this unit is being used in a finished basement with a makeshift home theater, game room, and gym arrangement, so I use zone 2 very frequently to send the signal to a secondary receiver for the game room and gym areas, while the theater area is zone 1. Zone 2 will occasionally just randomly stop working, requiring zone 2 being disabled and re-enabled to work again. Not the end of the world, as it doesn't happen very often at all, but my previous multi zone Onkyo receiver that this replaced never ever did that once in 8 years of ownership, so it is worth mentioning. Would I recommend against purchasing this receiver for this issue alone? Not at all, as it is only a very minor nuisance, but it is still worth mentioning if you don't like your music cutting out in the middle of a workout or game of pool every once in a while. UPDATE: It turns out that this was due to silent firmware updates changing my settings without me noticing and enabling a 2 hour power saving shut of for zone 2. 3. Another very minor issue is that WiFi has once refused to connect that required a full network reset within the menu AND a full unplug and replug of the unit to function again. This is just the nature of WiFi and Bluetooth, and has happened at one point or another in every single wireless device I have ever owned, including my other receivers. Im just mentioning that this one is no exception to the pitfalls of wireless tech. 4. Audyssey setup is a little buggy. If you start setting it up with 1 sub, stop, then enable a 2nd sub, it freezes the whole audyssee setup. It is a 100% repeatable bug. The solution? Remember to enable the 2nd sub before beginning the setup (every single time you run the setup, it will revert back to 1 sub even if you previously set it to 2, so you must do this every single time you run it). Why would you run it more than once? Well, if you are trying to calibrate for a 9.1 setup, it may crash before making it all the way through, requiring you to start all over again. Or you may swap or move speakers and want to recalibrate. Or it may randomly completely wipe out your audyssey calibration (did that to me once). But when audyssey on this unit is properly set up, the sound is nothing short of absolutely amazing, so it is worth the effort to get it working, if you happen to encounter any of these issues. UPDATE: I am not sure if this behavior has changed since I have not needed to re-run the setup at all. 5. And one final very bothersome known issue to me, though one that Denon has acknowledged and does claim they will address in a future firmware update, is that the power on volume setting does not work at the moment. So, music on this unit sounds great to me at vol of 40-45. By 50, it is extremely loud, above 60, it is painful to listen to and distorts due to my settings on that specific input, particularly the subs. However, for home theater use, it sounds best at 62.5 on the input I use for that, which, again, is far too loud for the music. So if I tell my echo device to play music, it will only either turn the receiver on at the last volume level, or at 0 (if I set it to 0 in the menu). I would ideally like it to power on at a volume of 45, but that is the function that is currently broken in the menu. It will just start up at the last volume setting, regardless of what you set it to. UPDATE: This has been fixed via firmware update and the unit will now power on to whatever volume you set. 6. Denon's firmware updates brought up a NEW issue I didn't notice until the updates began - I have the receiver set to auto update and NOTIFY ME THAT IT HAS UPDATED. It does not. It will update without letting you know that it has updated or what the update did. I really don't like that I had to go and do a search to see if there were any manual updates yet (since the menu says there are no updates available and none were performed), only to find out that they had pushed the update to my unit months prior without me knowing about the improved functionality, since the unit provides no update history at all. The other annoying thing here is that the updates will sometimes alter or reset some of your settings without you knowing, so you will periodically want to check that it hasn't disabled your Audyssey settings. It still remembers the overall setup, but sometimes disables the multi EQ, which will have a pretty significant impact on sound quality of everything, but music in particular will suffer, so just periodically pop up the onscreen display to see that it's still enabled if you use it. If I were in the market for a new receiver, I would whole heartedly buy this one again, though I might take pause for the fact that the current price has increased by almost 50% since I purchased it a couple of years ago for $1199. ... show more

    • Excellent receiver/preamp for the money
My beloved Onkyo PR-SC885 processor finally experienced the HDMI board failure and green screen effect. Probably heat related but couldn't realistically be determined. I could find no repair/part replacement option so started research on unit replacement. Also found no processor choice out there for reasonable money. If going receiver, I wanted pre-outs, so naturally that set the price option higher than desired. Didn't need the 7.1 connections though, so that did save a little money. Choices came down to 2 models in my price ballpark: Marantz 5015 and Denon X3700H. Gave a hard look at the 6015 and the 4700H and their higher cost but decided the extra amp power and features were simply not cost-effective for me using pre-amp mode and only running 5.2. Initially ordered the Marantz 5015 but a weird card issue arose and the deal was canceled and by then supply was nil. After solving the card weirdness, I opted to spend an extra C note and ordered the Denon 3700H. Very glad I did. 3 days after purchase the price rose a few hundred dollars on both units I had considered. (Kismet?) This is a wonderful piece of kit. Everything works so effortlessly with it. Audyssey set up takes a bit of time depending on size of system but works flawlessly in my large open space basement theater. As stated, I only run 5.2 and will likely never exceed that. So for me, the 3700 is more than overkill. But I like the fact amp channels can be turned off and heat reduced when using the pre-outs. That was always an issue with using previous receivers as pre-amps before moving to full separates with the Onkyo in '09. I don't mind having to turn them all off rather than selectively as with the more flexible X4700H. This Denon as pre-amp runs cool as a cucumber...but I still added in 2 Aircom S-Series cooler units to future proof in case my 20 year old 5 channel Parasound amp bites the dust and I have to use the Denon amps. I know Class D has seen significant improvement over the years. Testing shows the Denon amping in this model is as good as the X3600H, which received superb reviews, delivering excellent power while maintaining really good specs. My unit has a serial # that ends above 70000 so there should be no need for the HDMI 2.1 fix. Not a gamer anyway so it was never really any issue for me. You get so much for the money with this unit. The SQ is amazingly detailed after running Audyssey. I sit perpendicular to my HT downstairs when at my work desktop computer. I'm roughly halfway between the fronts and rear surrounds depth-wise but off on one side of the room by quite a few feet. Usually run All Channels Stereo when working and streaming Pandora or playing CDs from an OPPO 103D or a Sony 1100ES player. The SQ is just incredibly detailed and crisp with clear presentation and effortless delivery. Obviously time will tell the reliability story but I'm hoping the investment in the Aircom cooler units will help in that regard. Right now everything is solid, sounds great and works as advertised. The Heos app add-on for the iphone is very cool and I usually have my phone charging in upright stands so it looks very trick when controlling the receiver. Highly recommended. Update: just purchased the Denon Bluetooth AH-C820W Neckbar earbuds to pair with the X3700H. Outstanding SQ and makes listening a breeze. Didn't need the full Noise cancellation for the Wireless buds, just isolating for work. I love these things! Helps to make the workday go by so much faster. ... show more
