    • Anything larger than a 2" diameter soft wood stick - you will be sadly out of luck.

There is a slight chance it would work on wood larger than a 2" diameter stick, but only if you had the following: 1. A 34 inche, 16 lb. sledgehammer. 2. A friend who is crazy enough to hold the wood steady on top of the "splitter" while you swing the sledgehammer dangerously close to his/her head. Perhaps if you supplied a helmet, they would be more willing. If you don't have both of the above, I would recommend not burning your money on this item; the scrap yard won't give you much for it. ... show more

I got the large and am glad I did, it's a good size for most of my logs. I have a house in the woods and am constantly processing wood from the fallen trees, so this is a must-have. It makes the job a lot easier. The metal is very solid and the blade is sharp. There are screw holes for permanent attachment (which I did), but it also comes with a carry bag for travel. It's small enough to take car camping, so I would definitely consider picking up another one next summer for those longer camping trips. ... show more

This is a review of the "large" (3 13/16" wide) wedge. I mounted it on a 1.5" thick board (see photo) and gave it a try. The idea is to hold the log/piece of wood with one hand and bang it with all your might with the other, preferably using a sledge hammer. The result was less than impressive - I could split a 6" long piece with an approximate cross-section of 2.5" x 4", but when I tried splitting an 8" long piece, forget it, no such luck! Perhaps if I had some "movie set" logs (the type of logs that split four ways when the hero chops them - this scene always occurs at the beginning of a western, with the hero working on his homestead right before he is asked to drop the axe and embark on an adventure), then I could split logs as long as the ones pictured on the product page. However, since I only have real logs, I guess I will disassemble my construction and use this wedge as a paperweight. The small wedge would probably make a neater (smaller) paperweight. ... show more

First off, the large should really be labeled the small. The small size shouldn't even exist for a log splitting application, would maybe be feasible for only kindling. They large that they should sell should be twice as big as their current large one. They add in 2 small screws with washers, which are hardly adequate to secure this item during heavy loads. The included gloves are typical nitrile gloves, not suitable for log splitting, nor offer any real protection, except helping you not slip on your hammer/club. All that said, it is a solid piece of metal that should hold up to some good use, but only for smaller (6" or less) logs. This will not be suitable for splitting full sized rounds from a tree. ... show more

This is a nice kit with all the accessories, but I think the main thing here is the solid nature of the splitter. It's not a large item, but that's nice for making it be portable and easy to move around if desired. It has a really thick powder coating on it. I don't know how well that will hold up long term, but it seems like it should really help this to last a long time, even if left outside. Happy to recommend. ... show more
