    • A Good Portable Cleaner - 10/2018 Update
Style: Portable Spot Cleaner Pattern Name: Cleaner
For several years we had a heavy upright rug cleaner that worked fine, but was a pain to move around and lug up/down stairs. It worked fine for cleaning large areas, but the spot cleaning hose attachment sucked - and not in a good way... Over the years we replaced much of our carpet with hard wood, and realized that much of the carpet cleaning we did was spot cleaning (dog pee or a muddy shoe print). They upright carpet cleaner was a heavy hassle to use, so we bought the Rug Doctor portable. It works perfect for this small area (or stair) cleaning. I chose this over a competing Bissell unit for one critical reason: this has a moving brush in the handle which is key to getting a dirt loosened and sucked up. As another reviewer pointed out, the handle is a bit oddly shaped and is not easy to use in confined spaces like the floor pan of a car, but that aside, the motorized head, combined with very good suction, has made all the difference. I wish the plastic body was a had a little more quality feel to it, but in the end it cleans like a champ, and I am making a conscious effort to not treat this unit roughly in the hopes that it works for many years. ================================= October 2018 Update: Had this unit for two years now, and it is still working excellent. As noted above, I try to treat it with care, especially when winding/unwinding the hose so as to not cause kinks or tears. I also keep it clean: every few uses I drain it completely and fill my sink with a mixture of hot water (~140F) and bleach, and then suck it through the cleaner. It not only cleans out the old dirty water residue from inside, it also disinfects it. This has had a huge effect on eliminating the bad odors in the cleaner that lingered after I used it. Still happy with it. ===================================================== June 2022 Update: It died. The supply tube to the sprayer in the handle leaked over the motor that agitates the brush…the nozzle was clogged. I searched online for replacement parts and ordered them. Was able to take apart the handle and replace everything but it never worked as well again. So i tossed it. It was replaced with a new Bissell upright cleaner with an upholstery attachment. Upright steam cleaners in 2022 are much, much lighter (and yes, probably much less robust) than the ones of old, but the Bissell upright I bough is pretty light and doesn't weigh that much more than the old Rug Doctor. The Rug Doctor is a great machine, but given that I still have some large area rugs, the upright is better choice for me these days. ... show more

    • Incredible machine! Amazing suction! Best spot cleaner I've ever owned!!! (former Bissell user)
We purchased this machine in October 2014. We've gone through three of Bissell Spot (1 Little Green Machine, 2 Spot Bot Automatics) cleaners over the last 10 years because we have a kitty that has hairball problems. Her nickname is "The Vominater"!!! I know, gross! We did change her food so she is having less messy hairballs but we still need to clean up her occasional messes. Your carpet is only as clean as how much of the dirty liquid that your spot vacuum can suck up! This Rug Doctor really is AMAZING!!! When the last Bissell died, I was looking for something with better suction and the reviews on this machine convinced me to give it a try. What a HUGE difference!! The suction truly is AT LEAST twice as much as the Bissell which makes cleaning messes much, much faster! I also feel confident that it's getting the carpet very clean! I didn't have that confidence with the Bissell machines. It's very easy to use. I like that it has an on/off switch for the motorized brush! I get up most of the pet mess with a paper towel first but then I go over it without the motorized brush turned on so it just picks up the rest of the messy residue without grinding it into the carpet. When all that's left is the liquid mess, I turn on the motorized brush which helps it loosen up the carpet fibers so it can suck up as much liquid as possible! CLEANING TIP: The brush handle is not removable and does sometimes retain some cat hair/pet mess in it that is visible through the clear plastic. To clean it out, I take the Rug Doctor over by the sink, hold the nozzle over the sink and run warm/hot water through the clear plastic nozzle opening which goes down through the hose. Then I plug in the machine and turn it on. It's amazing how much more dirty water comes out because it also helps cleans out residue from inside the hose! I do clean the dirty water tank parts after every use by emptying out the dirty water tank and then washing them in the sink with a mixture of water and dishwasher detergent. I then let them all air dry before putting it back on the machine. I don't put much water/solution in the tank since I don't use much for each pet mess. It says to always empty the water/solution after each use but I have found that mine does not leak so I just leave it in there. This machine is much heavier than the Bissell spot cleaners but not too heavy that I can't carry it up and down the stairs. It does have wheels and two different handles. One releases to a long handle (see photos) so you can comfortably wheel it around. There is also a stationary short carrying handle right next to it for lifting it up and carrying it. It also sits very nicely on the stairs if you need to clean a mess on them! The hose winds up very nicely each time with the nozzle resting right where it should! The cord is a nice long length! To sum it up, this machine just beats the other spot cleaners hands down! I wish I would have purchased one sooner but I'm really glad I have one now! This Rug Doctor is awesome!!! ... show more
