    • New Battery fixed the 'Five Yellow Flashes" Issue

Roommate has an Alienware Alpha, and it wouldn't boot one day. Instead, the power button flashed yellow five times. This means that the CMOS battery is failing or has failed. This battery was a direct replacement, and the connector was also correct. The battery is on the bottom of the motherboard, so you have to take everything apart to get to it. If you're not familiar with taking computers apart, you may want to have someone else help you. I personally found it an easy job, but it took a little while to figure out how to take everything apart. However, be aware that the replacement battery may not be charged when you get it. This is not a defect in the battery, CMOS batteries are rechargeable. Just leave the computer off but plugged in, and let it sit for a couple of hours so the CMOS battery can charge. Afterwards, you may have to turn the computer on and off a couple times before it will boot correctly. Now, when the old CMOS battery dies it loses some settings; you'll get a message on the screen when you boot for the first time with the new battery. Follow the instructions on the screen to get into the settings menu. All you need to do is set the day and time, ignore all the other settings. At the bottom of the screen, it will tell you what keys to press to make the changes. Save and Restart, and you're done. ... show more

After years of enjoying my Alienware Alpha, *it* happened; the dreaded yellow light of death. Now, I did not know about this error light since I never had any issues before(thankfully!) so once I looked up the issue, it seemed the most likely culprit was a dead cmos battery. Since I wanted to get my computer up and running swiftly, I went ahead and ordered this since it was the only one that came up as the one my Alpha required. I didn't wish to go through various purchases and returns. After receiving the battery the day after the light issue(fantastic!), I opened my Alpha up. Going forward, if I do need to lift up my motherboard for this again, I *will* take out the hard drive first. Lesson learned. The back plate that covers the ports was a nuisance, but it did come off. It was then just a matter of unplugging and peeling off the old battery, and then pasting the new battery in(don't forget to peel off the backing!). I put everything back into place, and voilà! My Alpha lived once more! Not enthused I had to spend $15 for a battery I shouldn't have had to replace, but from what I hear, I got off very lucky. With a planned upgrade to an ssd after upgrading my RAM to the max 16GB, I think this little box should last me a while yet! ... show more
