  • Heavy built machine
You will need help getting this monster out of its box and onto your bench. Heavy cast iron. Not too thrilled about the doors you open to get at the chuck. Plastic and very poorly made. They don't fit the holes and don't stay shut without putting the screws back in.

  • Good machine, but get different bits.
I'll agree with the other reviews on this item. The machines itself is decent and the xy table is great. The bits that come with the machine are horrible. They are poorly machined and make an incredible amount of noise, don't eject well and overheat quickly. I already broke one and was using it in a very reserved manner due to my concerns about the noise and overheating.... I would buy better bits immediately. Overall I'm happy with the machine as it meets my needs for now. ... show more

  • Returned it
I'm sure it's an awesome machine but when delivered the package was destroyed. I thought no worries if the machine is cool but I looked at the machine through a hole in the box and could see the cast iron base had a massive crack in it so I sent it back.

  • Totally what I needed
I seen this on the site and always wanted to get one . Now when I need to make a mortise I just walk over to my mortise machine and before I know it I'm done and moving on to the next step in the project. Well worth the money.

  • Worth the money but need to improve
Considering the money I spent on it, I am quite satisfied cause there is no Mortiser with a compound table at such kind of price. But if you are serious on your work, you might spent much time on tuning it. 1. The chuck has a 0.1 mm wobbling on radical direction. It is a cheap b16 chuck, although it is not much an issue for accuracy itself. It could be an issue together with next issue. 2. The hole and bushing to fix the chisel part have too much play, further it looks like the hole is not consistent in radius, which means it has a little bit taper, this cause the chisel could not be up-right to the table. Although usually the chisel has a taper on the far end, this helped that only head part will touch the wood, so even the hole and bushing is not good still we could get a straight cut, but together with 1, it could cause the boring bit and chisel touch with each other too much, which leading sudden stop of the motor and overheating. 3. Railing system of the table is finished wildly, too many mill marks, I don’t have instrument the measure the accuracy, but I doubt it should not be good. 4. The fence is also finished wildly, and further more, not flat and not perpendicular to the table, this could be a serious issue, cause it could lead to a inclined cut when you use the press to the wood. 5. Like other guys said, the bits are useless, boring bits are larger that square chisel, you could not get a real square hole, also there are no escaping groove on the chisel, which cause the wood scrap chiseled down has no way to be transported outside, this is the real reason that the machine could be jammed easily. I’d rather Rikon not to append the chisel, since such kind of chisel is useless, but fine finished the fence and make it accurate. ... show more

  • Setting Up the Machine
Machine is well built and seems to work very well. It is heavy so make sure you have help unpacking and setting up. Note that the front handwheel extends below the machine base, so when mounting the machine to a bench or stand, plan on the wheel projecting below the base of the machine. I had to run a metric plug tap 8.0 X 1.25 through all of the bolt holes on the clamping plate surface before they would take the bolts. Aligning the bits square to the back plate is challenging at first. I suggest lowering the head until the bit is below the top of the back plate, locking it in place by tightening the same screw you loosened initially to allow the head to raise, and then bringing the back plate out to touch the bit. You can then adjust bit position to be flat (parallel) to the back plate. ... show more
