  • My daughter only plays Rico now!
Size: Strength 3.0 Style: 10-pack
Standard for all my reviews: When reviewing products, I always remain objective and honest about the product or service. I always review with information that I feel others would like to know about the product as I always assume what I'm writing will influence for or against the purchase. I always try to go above and beyond surface characteristics and input into quality, value and application. Most importantly, I will always end the review with an answer as to whether I'd purchase the product again which I believe is the most critical question pertaining to the item. To manufacturers: Want me to review your items, just let me know! My daughter is 17 and has been playing the bass clarinet for about 5 years now. She also plays the piano but her bass is her favorite instrument. After trying other reeds, she really prefers these Rico 3s. The hardness of the reed is perfect for her and the quality has been consistent. She gets more life out of them over some of the other recognized brands. We don't ask questions anymore as to why, she doesn't want to take the chance. They aren't cheap but if you watch the prices, you can get a nice discount from time to time. ... show more

  • Great reed for middle school students
Size: Strength 2.5 Style: 10-pack
I am a middle school band director and I buy these reeds for my students. They are consistent, easy to break in, and best of all, they sound great. I don't mess with 2 reeds even for my beginners because they tend to play very flat and airy. The 2.5s are perfect for 6th grade beginners, though I move them to 3s once they get over the break around December. A box of 10 should last them 2-3 months, more if they rotate them and break them in properly. As a brass player who only dables in woodwind instruments to demonstrate tone for my students, I buy mitchelle lurie 3s and I get a much deeper, resonant sound from them. The trade-off is that they are more expensive, require a bit more mouth strength, and you may have 3-4 reeds in a box that will not play well at all. The worst part is that beginners can rarely identify a bad reed and could think it's their instrument or that they are doing something wrong. Ricos are consistent and I rarely find a bad reed even in a box of 10. Good luck. ... show more

  • Good for a doubler.
Size: Strength 3.0 Style: 3-pack
I am primarily a clarinetist and Bass Clarinet is a "double" for me. I spend a lot of time and energy on my soprano clarinet reeds but as little as I have to play bass I'd rather not spend that kind of time on Bass Clarinet reeds. These are consistent enough to play with little or now adjustment and they are inexpensive. ... show more

  • Only brand my daughter will use
Size: Strength 3.0 Style: 3-pack
We tried several different reeds for her when she started with her bass clarinet, beginning with the brand she used on her regular clarinet, but this is the only reed she likes for her bass.
