  • my favorite handheld game player
Style: Blue
I couldn't tell you how many of these little handheld game players I have. Each one brings a unique experience as well as a different variety of games. While this one has 666 games, there's no need to be superstitious! The ones I played worked very well and with so many to choose from, I could play a different game every day for almost 2 years! The battery life on this has been pretty good -- 4-5 hours with the sound very low. My only complaint about this is that the only way to tell it's getting ready to die is that the screen starts to dim until it shuts off entirely (usually 30min). With a simple micro-USB port for charging it's easy enough to find a cable quickly so that I can keep playing. Unfortunately, there is no distinction between a charging and full battery when looking at the LED, so I tend to charge it overnight if I've played it for more than a couple of hours. One thing I wish it had included were a list of every game that came on this system, so being the nerd I am, I typed it up so I could remember what was included. Your standard SMB1 and SMB3 are on here as well as other FamCom/NES favorites like Donkey Kong and DK Jr -- but be sure to check out the images if you're interested in the full list (at the time of this writing). One thing that can be an issue with these handhelds are the buttons and for what it's worth, the d-pad (which is a circle but still operates just the same) gave me very smooth playback and I was able to duck, run, and jump any time I needed. Keep in mind that with 4 buttons (B, A, Y, X) there might be games that play a little differently or use Y & B instead of the B & A you're used to. Sometimes, the extra two buttons have additional functions, such as continuous shooting -- but this is all dependent upon the game itself. There is an RCA video/audio out for your TV/monitor, but it should be noted that you might need an RCA-to-HDMI adapter on newer TVs that don't have this composite setup. I thought the picture quality was great viewed like this, but the included cable was too short to sit far enough away and be comfortable. All in all, I'm extremely happy with this game system, despite it missing SMB2 -- a classic I just don't get to play often enough! ... show more

  • It all depends on expectations!
Style: Orange
First, as others have said, the games repeat. I'm not sure of the exact number but I picked one game and cycled through all 666 and saw it repeated 3 times, so maybe you're getting 222 games? Dunno. BTW, you can scroll down one game at a time or to the right or left 10 games at a time. There are several things about this I wish would be different. But I keep reminding myself: it's under $20. This many games in a little USB-rechargeable handheld is really pretty nice. But, I'll mention a couple of them anyway. 1. The screen is sooo tiny. I would have preferred they made better use of the surface space and increase the screen size a bit. yes I know I could in theory hook this into my tv, but am I going to? No. 2. It doesn't save high scores. What was more fun back in the day than getting high score on a machine and coming back later and still seeing it there? 3. Having to go back to the "choose a language" screen when exiting a game. If I was on game 247, why can't I just go back to that page? Someone should post the list of games, that'd be helpful. Maybe even the manufacturer! The buttons are more responsive than you might expect. That's great! I hope they can withstand extended mashing. And the games that I have chosen to play before look and feel like what I remember from back in the day. [I did find something called "Gig Dug" which was weird, but then I found "Dig Dug" and life was good again.] Thankfully there are resources online to tell you what the controls are for many of the games, because you won't get any help from this device. So, this all comes down to expectations. Do you think a tiny plastic retro budget device is going to compare favorably to having a 900-pound quarter-eating Dig-Dug machine in your game room? Then this is a 1-star purchase for you. Do you not mind a flawed, tiny version of Super Mario and Pac Man and Golf and Pika Chu and Donkey Kong and a hundred others for $20? Then follow me and rate this 3.75 stars! ... show more
