  • Awesome retro-gaming console that plays cartridges from multiple systems
Do you look back fondly upon the cartridge-based video game systems you played growing up? Do you have a bin of old cartridges sitting unused in the garage or buried in the closet that you wondered what you'll ever do with besides take to a yard sale? Tired of having a dozen different retro gaming consoles sitting around collecting dust, with video output that doesn't work with modern HDMI-based displays or a rat's nest of cables running to multiple converter boxes? Then the Retro Freak is for you! HOW IT WORKS The Retro Freak is a console which runs emulators for several up to 16 different retro gaming systems, including the SNES/Super Famicom, NES/Famicom, GameBoy, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color, Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, PC Engine/Turbografx-16, and the PC Engine SuperGrafix. Better yet, it has cartridge slots for these games, meaning you can plug in your old cartridges, and the Retro Freak additionally can download your cartridges to either its internal memory or to a MicroSD card (not included but highly recommended) so you can toss the cartridges back in the box after loading them. The Retro Freak also works with original controllers for these systems if you want an authentic retro experience! Add in that the video output is HDMI for modern displays and that the system offers several upscaling and smoothing functions, and your old games will look awesome on the big screen. The user interface is slick and available in several languages; the English version is very well-done. This UI allows you to easily switch between games as well as to "save state" for any game at any point (up to 99 saved states per game). Get to a tough part of an original game? Save your state and save the frustration of needlessly replaying the same stretch over and over again! Or have multiple options you want to try? Save the state and play through each of them. This "save state" function is separate from the normal battery-backed "save" function supported by some games (although Retro Freak will also back up those old battery saves--I managed to still have functional saves in several games from the mid-80s and early-90s that I copied over!). You can copy all your content to MicroSD and then back up to your PC as well. The cartridge slots are attached to the core Retro Freak console, but if not needed, you can remove the cartridge adapter and leave behind the Retro Freak console itself, which is a bit larger than a deck of cards. Talk about portable! Retro Freak also includes a "cheats" function that works similarly to Game Genie or other hardware "cheat" devices--but with extra flexibility in that you can have dozens of active cheats on at once, and can turn them on or off at any point during game play. The only challenge is that Retro Freak only publishes their cheats in Japanese, but you can fairly easily adapt the Retron 5 cheat files (Google for more info) for Retro Freak simply by renaming the files on the MicroSD card (and can add new raw-format codes from online if they're not already part of the Retron 5 cheat DB). You can also apply "patches" for Japanese-language games that apply fan-made translations, so playing all those SFC/FC/Mega Drive games will be a lot easier than back in the 80s/90s when you had to read Japanese. I know that Raspberry Pie-based units (illicitly) loaded with pretty much every game out there--the Retro Freak is *not* that. You have to own the cartridge (or borrow it) or else already have a compatible ROM file to place on the MicroSD card. Additionally, the ROM copies the Retro Freak itself creates & stores are encrypted so that you aren't just ripping cartridges and uploading them online (there are ways around that, of course, if it bothers you to have ROMs from cartridges you own unavailable for use on other emulators/platforms; Google is your friend). PLEASE KEEP IN MIND that this particular version is the Super Famicom (SFC)-centric version of the Retro Freak. It will still play all of the same games that other versions of the Retro Freak will, but being SFC-centric, this one does not include the NES cartridge adapter (the NES/Famicom slot only accepts Famicom games without it), and the controller adapter has only SNES/SFC jacks. You can easily remedy this by tracking down any NES-to-Famicom adapter (72-pin to 60-pin, make sure it's for NES cartridges to be played on a Famicom and not the other way around); no need to buy the Retro Freak-branded one which can be very pricey to find these days. As for the controller adapter, you can use SNES controllers or USB controllers; if you really want to use original NES controllers, you can purchase the Retro Freak adapter online separately). Likewise, it doesn't include the "Power Base Converter" needed for some of the Sega-branded cartridges) but supports it if you pick it up aftermarker. The out-of-the-box power adapter works fine on North American voltage (110-120v); I've seen some folks claim that because Japan uses 100v power, the unit will "run hot" and could be damaged--and recommend power transformers. I have not had this issue at all, and will say that the Retro Freak rarely gets all that hot; I simply set it on a little laptop stand or even a couple of books to allow some air circulation underneath and have had zero problems. Honestly, the power adapter is a switching power supply and shouldn't have any issues--and the Japanese power plug is identical to North American ones, so no plug adapter is needed. Europeans or others on 220-240v power may want a step-down transformer just to be safe, I suppose. THE BOTTOM LINE I have had a blast--an utter, absolute blast--reviving my old cartridge games on the Retro Freak. I've played through both some of my favorites from start-to-finish as well as some of the beat-your-head-against-the-wall frustratingly-hard games (like Ninja Gaiden) using the "save state" functionality. Better yet, I was able to box back up several of my retro systems that were gathering dust on the TV stand (and whose cables I had to trace out every time I played them to figure which plugged into what and which inputs I needed to switch to). The cost is high given the Retro Freak hasn't been in production for a couple of years now, but it's still well-supported by its manufacturer Cyber Gadget with firmware updates, documentation, (Japanese language) cheat downloads, etc., on their English-language website. I wish I'd come across this system a few years back when it first came out--it's honestly the best of the emulation-based retro consoles out there. ... show more
