  • Works great, don't spend more
Was impressed by the quality of product and ease to install

  • Works great for bicycles
Most of the bicycle hoists which I could find seemed to be engineered to meet a low price point and not sturdy enough for safely storing bicycles overhead on a 13’ high ceiling. This hoist was designed for kayaks, so it is sturdier than most of the bicycle hoists. It came with two complete hoists, perfect for my 2 bicycle family. I provided the 1x4 lumber screwed to ceiling joists (see photos.) I also purchased marine style rope cleats to safely fasten the ropes to the wall (see photo.) The provided cleats would probably have worked fine, but I installed them next to the marine cleats to hold the excess rope when the bikes are in the uppermost ‘ceiling’ storage position. The cam rope locks work well and seem very secure, but, of course, you should use two rope twists on each cleat for redundant safety - don’t want a falling bike to destroy an expensive car or a human. The bikes are easy to raise and lower - and can also be secured in mid air to do maintenance work without having the bend over or squat. Some reviewers criticized the included rope, but it is certainly more than sturdy enough for bicycles. The j hooks are width adjustable and are also sturdier than the ones provided in typical ‘bicycle’ hoists, and worked very well on the seats and handlebars. In my bicycle application, I did not see any use for the webbed straps provided for holding kayaks, so I threw them in my parts bin for future use. The pulley wheels are nylon/plastic instead of steel. I’ve seen these types of pulley wheels fail on block and tackle equipment, but they were moving enormous loads. I think these nylon pulleys are sturdy enough for the much lesser weight of bicycles. But I would have been happy to pay a few extra bucks for steel - can’t the manufacturer offer steel pulley wheels as an upgrade option? Summary: fair price for two hoists that look great and do the job. I often get compliments on how cool these hoists look in my garage. ‘Nuff said. ... show more

  • Good for price. Decent amount of effort involved and sits rather low above ground
Ended up having to go perpendicular to my ceiling joists. Chopped off a foot from an 8 foot 2x4 and mounted the 7 footer mounting board to the ceiling joists with separately purchased 3/8 x 4 inch lag screws with a 1/4 pilot hole drilled first. Then mounted black brackets to the board with the kit included 1/4x2inch lag screws. Didn't have any issue with these included lag screws snapping off nor the cleattscrews that lots of reviews complain about. With that being said the included rope is indeed inferior and frays real easy on the pulley brake. Also don't cut it. You might not have enough length. I didn't cut it as per instructions and just used standalone twine rope to make the horizon brake line. My biggest con is how low this kayaks sits. On my 10 foot ceiling garage the kayak is barely 6 feet above the ground just grazing my head. In hindsight the 6 foot minimum distance between pulleys they recommend was dumb. On a 9.8 foot kayak this gets the straps way at both tip ends of kayak to the point that they barely hold and want to slip away. I should have done them 3 to 4 feet apart. The mechanism from ceiling to hooks in lowest parked position measured 15 inches and the another 20 inches after that for the kayak. Impossible to get this above my rolling garage door when it retracts which was ultimate goal. I put my kayak inverted and couldnt get the strap hooks to hold any shorter for a higher position off the ground. Also manual called for 2 people. I pulled it off by just myself. You definitely need a ladder or two and an impact driver. Also did not premount system to board. Did it in air after board was already mounted. Followed a real good DIY YouTube tutorial for this radz model on how to run the rope correctly through pulleys. For second ceiling kayak I need to mount I will be trying a basic upside down T shaped metal bracket parallel off ceiling joists and 18 inches from ceiling. Perfect for above retracted garage door. Rad Still gets a decent 4 stars since it accomplished the taks for ceiling mounting a kayak. Just need to buy some extra parts screws and woodplank if needed ... show more

  • Great value for the money
Absolutely zero issues with assembly or operation. It works exactly as advertised. Part quality is excellent with no blemishes or missing pieces. Assembly does take some thought due to the variety of ways this can be installed. Plan it using the instructions carefully. The rope routing and length also takes some thought but is easy enough to do once you understand it. The few complaints about "not enough rope for two" needs context. This is two complete sets and there IS enough rope for two...depending on your ceiling height and if you use the tie between the hooks to keep from spreading. For an 8' ceiling, it should be enough. For my 9'6" ceiling in the barn with mounting OVER the joists, it was enough for the hooks to sit a foot off the floor with the end of the rope in my hands at chest level (I'm 6'2"). There was no extra available for tying the hooks together, however. I used extra rope I already had for that. Again, think ahead on your ceiling height and situation. Mine worked out just fine and I'm happy with the purchase. ... show more
