This is a very nice DIY kit if you are thinking about building your own Murphy Bed. I was a little hesitant about the price of the hardware, but it is high quality hardware that I do not worry about breaking. The pistons are high quality and when the bed was fully assembled, it took about 40 pounds to hold the bed down. About the weight of the mattress. I would not say that this project is for the faint of heart as it does require some woodworking skills and tools too complete, but, if you take your time, read the directions and use the "measure twice, cut once" methodology, you will have a great piece of furniture to be proud of. The directions are thorough with good photographs and the instructional video is helpful too. Make sure to watch the video, don't think your "too skilled" for it. If you have some woodworking skills, you can certainly tweak things a bit to make it your own. The plans do not come with a full top shelf, just an empty space, but even the horizontal queen is over your line of vision so you cannot see it. But to make things fun, I built a top shelf on it to put trinkets and stuff on. Plus, it makes for a cool secret hiding spot! Here are the tools that I used for my bed. Contractor table saw Skill Saw Miter saw Drill (drill press is handy if you have one) Jig saw Sander Lots of Clamps This took me about 2 months to complete, mainly because I have a small shed for a show and I was working with the weather. The media could not be loaded. The pictures and video are my final raw product. I'll be adding some trim and paint soon, but I thought this was better for the kit review. Also I did all plywood option and it cost around $600 with the screws plus other odds and ends. I've been back twice and spent more. You should probably think closer to $800 plus the cost of the kit to get to the point shown. I'm pretty handy and have a good compliment of tools, but this was probably the most exacting furniture project I've done. The instructions in the kit are great, but could probably use some color highlights for the really key stuff. I think a few more things could be included. The kit comes with all the specialty screws that are black to match the hardware, but you'll need a lot more to join the wood. That's fine but one thing I found lacking was they included the mattress strap, but no way to secure it. Throw in the two little plates instead of making me buy them or forage in my garage. I'd also like to have seen a nice bar to join the two legs and maybe a way to lock it so that eliminates the strap. I'd buy again, but remember measure four times, cut once and straight... This project took my wife and me 2 weeks working on it nights and weekends. We bought oak plywood at Home Depot and had them cut the pieces large, then cut them down to size at home with a table saw/skill saw, stain & seal, then assemble. We spent maybe $400 in wood and other material costs. Cutting and staining took up the majority of time and assembly only took 2 days. Besides the bed frame, there are about 20 pieces that needed stain and were critical to get the measurements right. It turned out great and the instructions were clear, although it was hard to picture how the pieces would all come together until the final assembly. There's lots of measuring and general moving the 20 wood pieces around for cutting, sanding and staining. The bed comes down with an awesome whoosh sound, and is light enough to pull down or put up that a child could do it. We are so happy with the results and friends and family compliment on the workmanship. I would love to see plans available for matching side cabinets / night stands to match the main cabinet. The project definitely requires some woodworking skills and having a decent shop really helps, but all the cuts are right angle plain vanilla cuts, nothing fancy. I think most people that have issues with this product is with the woodworking, not the product itself or the assembly. The pictures don't do any justice since it's hard to take a decent picture of something so dark. A year later, we purchased the same kit because we are so happy with the results. For the 2nd kit, I had Home Depot do all of the cuts and got the project finished in a week, with most of the time going to sanding/staining. Tip: If you're going to have a box store do the cuts, write out the cut dimensions clearly with a sharpie on 2" painter's tape and label the boards as they're being cut. ... show more

Not only is the hardware quality, the instructional booklets will take you from cutting the pieces to full assembly with very little to be questioned. And if you have questions, there are videos to walk you through, step by step. My Murphy turned out an excellent furniture piece as well as an extra bed for when company comes. I even had left over wood for a nice side shelf unit for a side shelf and to store extra blankets. ... show more

Great product and fantastic instructions but honestly just buy an already made Murphy bed. After all is said and done we spent 26 hours and $750ish dollars on wood, the kit and additional little supplies needed to make this and we still need to stain and paint it.
