Description

When master goldsmith Alan Revere published Professional Goldsmithing in 1991, he brought traditional European trade education to the US for the first time, adapting it for an American audience. The book was a best seller and quickly became a standard text in the field. To mark the 2oth anniversary of this groundbreaking work, Revere and Brynmorgen Press offer a revised and expanded edition that includes new projects, scores of new photos, and a handsome new layout. What hasn t changed is the precise instruction that makes this edition a fitting testament to its predecessor. Read more

  • Great
Very good book for jewelry crafting, stone setting, etc. Great investment.

  • Kindle version on my cell works for me. Excellent book
I've been a self taught metalsmith for a few years. Decided to start working through the excellent projects in this book--about thirty-five of them with detailed explanations and lots of background information. Almost 1000 pages. Projects ranging from beginner to advanced goldsmith skills. So far, I've learned how very much I didn't know, and I'm finding that with the good info in this book my skills are getting much better. I intend to go through all the projects in order presented, and not moving on to a new project untill I've perfected the one I'm currently working on. This book has become my favorite form of procrastination! I've been watching many youtubes and from reading this book have become very critical of them. It can be very discouraging when you try to duplicate what you've watched and realize that it doesn't give you all the information you need. ... show more

  • Up your jewelry making game.
I got the kindle version instead of the physical book. I use kindle ap on my iPad. I’ve been working through all the projects and it’s been a great learning experience for me. Some projects really aren’t anything I would want to make again but the things I learn while doing them has really helped me in creating projects I really do want to make! I’ve learned tips and tricks and how to go about creating shapes and functional things that I never thought I could learn without going to an actual professional jewelry school. Sometimes I buy books and just read through the projects, but to really get all the benefit possible you really need to physically work through all the projects. Get your hands physically on these components, bend them, file them, fit them, prop them up while soldering, that’s where the learning comes. Make those earnuts! It’s so fun when that little light bulb goes off in your head, oooooh! I get it now!! While on my jewelry making path I’ve been limited on what I could create by the skills I knew at the time. At first I could only string beads, or wire wrap things together. Then I finally got a torch and tried soldering. This book has really taken me to the next level and opened up my skill level to new possibilities! I know that as I continue to work through this book and continue on to Alan Revere’s stonesetting book, the options of things I can create has been greatly increased and everything I make will be much more professional looking. And to top it all off there is a free Facebook group you can join to work through all these projects; with encouragement, helpful pointers, discussions, work arounds, and different people’s results with pictures and how things turned out for them. If the book is a little pricey, get the kindle, it still works. ... show more

  • An Excellent Resource for the Jeweler's Library
I had been working with silver for a little over a year when I purchased this book. It was so helpful to learn how to work more precisely using traditional techniques. We're so often taught today that modern (expensive) tools are the answer. They can increase productivity, but if you're not doing things 'right' from the start, they really don't help. On a side note: I am working through projects as part of Alan's Facebook group 'Let's Make Professional Jewelry.' If you are looking for community and excellent feedback, I highly encourage you to check out the group. There two tracks of projects to work through, each over the course of a year. ... show more

  • Best First Choice For Those Interested in Jewelry Making and Beyond!
Basically the 2nd edition of Revere's out of print "Professional Goldsmithing" and that is not a bad thing! A couple of new projects but basically the same photos and text from "Professional Goldsmithing", once again not a bad thing! Generally I'd give this 5 stars plus as it is the single best starting point for any jewelry maker of any level. The learning curve may be steep but instruction is quite clear. Numerous excellent step-by-step photos accompany each project. The projects are classic, not examples of this recent horrible art jewelry fad. SO why have I dinged it? Couple of reasons. While the book is over all very elegant the section on tools is some real crumby drawings, seems like an after thought. There is no good discussion of the single most important tool; the jewelers bench. And also I'd swear many of the photos were originally gold jewelry and simply desaturated to look like silver for this "Professional Jewelry Making" volume. The book DESERVED an upgrade on the tools and at least a couple of pages on the jewelers bench. These complaints are nit-picking I agree but none the less I found annoying in the original volume and was disappointed to find no effort put forth in this offering to improve. But I would still recommend this book to pretty much any jeweler and even crafts person interested in learning classic jewelry making. ... show more
