  • Amazing little box
Never having a dedicated phono preamp I decided to give one a try. I have an older Pro-ject Debut Carbon TT and recently upgraded the cartridge. I heard improvement but not to the expected level. I purchased the S2 Ultra. What a difference this little box made to listening to LPs. Well worth the investment to improve the sound of my modest system. It does expose poorly produced recordings but the good ones are noticeably improved in every way. I am a believer now. ... show more

  • Very good sound with Pro-ject DC Evo and Moonstone cartridge
Sounds great, big improvement pretty much everywhere over Schitt Mani ($139). The Mani was way better than what came in my high end AV receiver. To get this quality has been ~$1000 so a bargain.

  • Pre-Amps Have Personalities
Hello. I purchased this very fine Pro-Ject Phono Box S2 Ultra and returned it for refund. Thanks Amazon. I reviewed a Schiit Mani and returned that unit. My sensitive good hearing heard a white noise type of hiss from the Mani pre. And for the Pro-Ject Phono Box S2 Ultra I heard less bass. Both of these modern pre's being compared to my middle 1970's Phoenix systems P100 Mag phono preamp. This review will focus on the Pro-Ject Phono Box. Very quiet circuits. Phenomenal stereo separation. Beautiful audio. Crisp, pure audio. LACKING bass response. Played my standard test record. "The Ultimate Analogue testLP." Frequency sweep from 1khz down to 20hz. BASS frequency starts dropping slowly to -4dB after 80hz. I checked to make sure the SUBsonic button was NOT active. I like "warm" sounding audio. Not the bass from hip hop music played 2 blocks away. I just could not make myself accept this lack of bass and adjust the EQ to add what is missing. This technology has to be acceptable with EQ set FLAT and we go from there. I messed with the dip switches under the preamp and it was best for all dips set to off and no gain for a MC cartridge. ... show more

  • Na....
Just a awsome little preamp!!! Well worth the money...but there is still a humming. Looks like I need to get a earth ground for the humming to stop...

  • Good entry level phono stage.
Projects Ultra Phono is a good upper entry level phono pre if you have a decent mm or entry level mc cart. Ultimately I returned this piece after comparing it to the Mofi Ultra Phono which sonically blew it away in my system. The Project offers flexibility in cart loading but I needed to have the db set way up to get full sound and dynamics out of it. Out of the box it lacked bass. Once trimmed up the bass was back but overall the musical presentation was just ok. Build quality Is good and the terminals are solid. The S2 struck me as a good value for someone that wants to try out an mc cart or wants an affordable external phono stage. For an audiophile or someone that is a discerning music listener I would shop elsewhere. ... show more

  • Nice but can not tell difference between S2
Nice but can not tell difference between S2. I upgraded because I read there would be a noticeable difference. I don't hear it!

  • Liked it at first, then "listener fatigue" set in
It sounded very detailed and spacious out of the box but after awhile I thought my lps sounded too bright, even shrill. Maybe my favorite lps are badly recorded and the S2 was just revealing their flaws? I left it on for many hours, set the switches correctly (despite the sketchy instructions) and have a good source (Ortofon Blue in a Rega P2). I really tried to like the S2 but it just didn't sound like something I could live with- and for what I was paying. So I returned it. ... show more

  • dramatic fidelity improvement
not sure if it was the upgraded stylus I installed at the same time, but a dramatic improvement over the phone preamp on my Marantz SR5013. The instructions for the switches were a bit confusing at first look.
