  • ... what to do with two cats who just don't like each other
Style: Premium
We were all out of ideas on what to do with two cats who just don't like each other. One of them started territorial marking over a year ago. After trying numerous things and having her urine checked numerous times, changing her diet, buying feliway spray and plugins, getting separate litter boxes and food/water stations, and using enzymatic cleaner we just could not get the cats to get along or stop the territorial marking. At the end of our options and ideas we considered giving one of them up but finding a home for an adult cat (especially one that is marking or should maybe be an only cat in the household) is nearly impossible. I don't even remember how I stumbled upon the Prevue Pet Deluxe Cat Home but after reading all the reviews I wanted to give it a try. We introduced our territorial cat to it slowly by putting her in a separate room for a few days with the cat home in the room with her and all doors open. We moved her litter box and food/water bowls into the cat home and filled it with cozy blankets. As with other reviewers, we removed the hammocks and added an extra perch (which you will need to order separately). We also added a cat lounger/scratcher. We allowed her a few days to get used to the cage and coming in and out of it. She took to it rather quickly and within a day or two she was lounging in it on her own. Once she was comfortable with it we closed it up and rolled it into our family room. She meowed for a few minutes but settled down quickly. Once she was calm in the family room we would make it a point to love on her and pet her when she was relaxed and quiet. We also noticed that when the other cat passes the cage there is no longer hissing or growling. Now that she is used to the cage and relaxed in it, we roll her into our son's room and open the cage doors and let her come and go, sit by the window, lay on the bed and play but she will go back into it when she's tired or just to lounge. We close the cage doors when she is unsupervised and at night. She seems to have no objections to this. Some things I would recommend or learned during this process: 1. This is a terrific solution for a multi cat household where you're dealing with aggression or territorial marking. Our cats were litter mates and one incident seemed to make them enemies. This is a great solution if you don't want to abandon your cat and have exhausted all other options. 2. Take it slow and easy. Let your cat get used to the cage on his/her own time. Make it a relaxing and inviting place and place food/water bowls inside as well as their litter box. 3. As other reviews mentioned, the wheels SUCK. We bought 2 inch/50mm caster wheels at our local ACE and they are much sturdier and roll much more easily especially on our thick Frise' carpet. I will attach a photo of the casters to this review. 4. Give your cat the opportunity to get out of the cage and play/exercise in a safe area but take the cage with you and leave it open. They will go back to it and then you can simply close the doors and roll them to their normal spot. 5. Order an extra perch or two especially if you have a larger cat. 6. Toss a blanket or towel over one of the perches on the top for a little extra privacy. She seems to prefer this spot. 7. Don't go to the cage if the cat is meowing and protesting. Go to the cage and give affection when the cat is quiet and calm. Another big tip. Watch the ORDER of how you assemble the walls. Make sure you note which pieces have clamps and which don't so when you're finished assembling you don't have to take it back apart. Also the slider bars, make sure you slide them with the half moon facing the interior of the cage. ... show more

  • "Cats are connoisseurs of comfort"
Style: Premium
This product really came through for us and probably saved a life. An evening stroll around the area ends abruptly when we hear desperate animal cries for help. We look across the street by the highway we were walking along and see this pathetic little kitten curled up shaking as cars are whizzing by. As soon as I crossed the street this filthy fluff ball ran over to me screaming for help. So I scooped him up and brought him back over to the other side. Looking around it became clear that he was probably dumped by a car. (There was an empty box next to him as well) When we put him down and attempted to walk away hoping he would go home this screaming and clearly limping tiny mess came hobbling back up to us and our giant Great Dane. He wouldn't stop crying and appeared to be severely dehydrated so we couldn't just leave him to die. We set him up outside with food and water and watched him as he ravenously consumed as much as he could get down within minutes. We did what we could for the night. The next morning we took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with a skin infection, and a broken leg. Two days after his release from quarantine I go to clean the litter box and notice there isn't a lot of pee in the box. Oh please tell me he isn't peeing on our stuff. Not too long after, I watch him attempt to pee on our shoes. Then it was the kitchen floor, clothes, curtains. Back to quarantine. OMG, WHAT do we do now? Fortunately, we caught it before he peed on something that couldn't be properly washed. Call the vet, not a lot of help with this one there. So I turned to the Internet. I found a lot of information but no real answers other than the fact that he may never get it right. What do we do with a sickly cat that doesn't like using the litter-box and can't be left outside? Most cats get it right away. This one was sleeping behind the toilet on the plunger and toilet brush that he had just peed on which was inches away from his litter box. The little kitten that doubled in size in two weeks was now losing all his hair and living in our bathroom until a solution could be found. All he wants is to be loved. We couldn't pass the problem onto someone else or he would wind up in the shelter or worse. He can't be an outdoor cat for some time, if at all. After a ton of research and vet bills we decided we had to keep him confined and teach him all over again. We didn't want him to live in the bathroom any longer either. Finally I found this cat home from the company I get my bird products from. This product IS the solution we were looking for. As with most Prevue Pet Products, it had to be put together. I did it alone and it wasn't difficult to do. The assembly took me about 30 minutes to complete. All the pieces but one fit perfectly together. The one piece that I had trouble with was one of the metal connector bars. I was able to use a hammer to gently tap it down into place though. Pros: Easy to assemble Size Matters - room to sleep, play, dine, and use the kitty facilities Hammocks are durable and easy to wash Shelf Liners are easy to remove and wash Spacing between bars is safe Large door openings allow for easy access on each level Provides a go to "safe zone" for your kitty Gives you and your kitty Time to work together Price = good Cons: One of the Metal connectors had to be "forced" into place There really isn't anything I can find that would be cause to dislike this product. Whether you have a problem cat that needs retraining, or a new addition that needs to be quarantined/trained, this product is awesome! If you are fostering or considering to be a foster, you should consider this product. The next time someone says "I don't know what to do, my cat is ruining my belongings" or "I can't keep him anymore, (s)he pees on everything". Tell them about this product. ... show more

  • Great cage.
Style: Deluxe
I am a foster home for my local humane society and I purchased this cage to replace an old shelter cage that I was using. This new cage is larger so there is more room for the the mom cat and her kittens. The cage appears well designed and sturdy. The platforms are a good size and snap in to the bars of the cages and seems stable. The base is on wheels and it is very easy to move around. The doors are great, love them. They provide a large opening for easy access to the litter box and the kittens and their mom. The cons: personally I found this cage very difficult to put together and I feel that it will be a pain to take down, actually I will probably not even bother to try to take the cage down and just roll it to a storage area when it is not being used for fostering. The hammock seems like it was designed for light weight cats. I wish it had a slide-out plastic base tray for easy cleaning but the bottom and top door openings is so wide that I can actually fit my upper body in, so cleaning should not be to difficult. I have 4 pictures. One picture is the old cage next to my new cage for comparison and in one of the picture is my dog (who is about 22-24 lbs) inside the cage investigating it before I put the foster mom and her kittens in it. ... show more
