This feels like real, sturdy leather! The lock is nothing fancy, but that can easily be replaced if it isn't to taste. I used a fountain pen on the pages, with are thick and of a nice quality. My kids ages, 12, 10, and 8 years old loved this journal, the lock is sturdy and unique. We ordered 3 and each of the three locks have different keys, so no one can open anyone else's journal. The craftsmanship is beautiful. All the kids were so excited to use begin using their new journal.
