  • professional cabinetmaker perspective
Style: Planer
I purchased this machine with the straight knives, 5 HP in 2005. The machine was in continual service until 2012. Admittedly this is not an expensive machine for its capacity or horsepower, however the quality and reliability in a number of areas should be a concern to anyone who plans to use this to the level of the serious amateur or professional. The lower base is tinny and the small cheap plastic wheels are too small and weak for a machine of this weight; even the slightest impact would cause noticeable dents and deformation of the sheet metal. My biggest complaint on the machine is that it does not hold it's elevation even when locked down when planing tough hardwoods such as quarter sawn White Oak or Brazilian Cherry. With these challenging materials I had to take much lighter passes on the slower feed rate; for most other hardwoods like Poplar, mahogany, and cherry this planer was fine. Again, if you are a hobbyist and time is not a problem, this would be acceptable, but for the professional, you want another machine. I think this machine is too-flimsy to be considered to be a workhorse of a professional shop and you are going to be better off getting an American made 30-year old Powermatic, or a newer used SCMI. I would never buy the Powermatic Model 209 again. ... show more

  • Nice addition
Style: Planer
The Powermatic 20" planer replaced a 12" DeWalt that I had been using for almost 10 years. Straight out of the crate, this thing was ready to use. I checked all the alignments but no adjustments were necessary. This planer has some serious horsepower. It doesn't strain under load. It's extremely quiet for such a large and powerful machine. As a matter of preference, I love the 20" knives. I have not used a helical cutter on any planer or jointer so I don't have much comparison but I don't feel it's worth the extra money for the supposedly 'better' cutter. The 20" knives are extremely easy to remove and reset and I'm certain it's faster to swap out 4 knives than to rotate 99 little cutters. Maybe if you plan on planing boards with nails in them, but I don't plan on nicking up my knives. The cons: Why doesn't the 20" planer come standard with the digital gauge? The 15" model does. The wheels suck. I was expecting casters similar to the PM2000 cabinet saw. Instead, there are 4 fixed wheels so the machine only rolls in a straight line. To turn it, you kind of have to jerk and scratch it across the floor. Only 2 of the wheels lock (by tightening little thumbscrews into them) so the machine isn't really very stable when it's parked. Finding a permanent home for the tool and removing the wheels seems like a logical solution. They say "convenient 5-inch dust port". Let me tell you there's nothing very convenient about a 5" dust port. All dust hoses that I deal with regularly are either 4 or 6 inches. At least make a 5" to 4" converter accessory and charge like $50 for it. I'd buy one. The locking knobs (that lock the table height) are plastic. I always hate plastic parts on my tools, especially such integral parts. ... show more

  • Problem with delivery
Style: Planer
Delivery people were terrible!!!! They laughed at me when I said I wanted it in my back shed. Amazon needs to know who they are hiring for Delivery. Wound up returning plainer due to deception in wiring in my new shed. Equipment looked nice and excellent quality! ... show more

  • POWERMATIC 20 INCH SPIRAL BLADE PLANER
Style: Planer
If you have ever owned POWERMATIC equipment especially the model 66 cabinet saw or a different planer 15inch or above, then you allready know the quality design and build. I own a 15 year old model 66 presumably not built in indonesia or wherever there manufacturing plant is located currently. All manufacturing jobs are going overseas. I was hesitant to purchase the 2000saw because it is manufactured as we genericaly say, in China. however, no worry on that or the 20 inch planer, in fact the quality of the product may have improved. The planer is heavy!!!, but it has built in wheels with finger tighten plastic bolt heads, the only issue I have with the product. It was perfectly adjusted from the manufacturer except the thickness scale was about 3/16inch off but has maintained its position since readjustment for about 30 hours of use. every other adjustment is still perfect. I was tempted not to check out all adjustments since other equipment purchased from POWERMATIC have all been perfectly adjusted on arrival. Dont ever do that, its lazy, hazardous, can destroy equipment, and a planer can lose a blade with horrible consequence. It planes and planes without a grunt, even on a 5inch thick slab of mahogany 16inches wide formally a floor joist in an old church. It is boringly consistent and the finished product can be sanded with just 120grit handheld orbital, and then pre-finish sanding. Dust collection is typical about 85%. The planer is heavy!!!. Place it where it does not have to be moved. It is amazingly quite(just kidding). It is an excellent product. I would not buy anything else unless I could afford a bigger one from POWERMATIC. It sounds like a recording, but this is a tool you can rely on, no need for a backup. And Walter Miere(the manufacturer) is rock solid on warranty or service work. ... show more

  • OUT OF THE BOX WILL NOT WORK PERIOD
Style: Planer
I bought the 209 with spiral cutterhead. It arrived on time and in good shape. At start up I could not get the machine to feed and consulted youtube and the manual. Found no solutions to the extensive problems and after several days of trial and error to attempt to correct the extensive problems I gave up and asked for a return in frustration. The only way it will plane a board is if you push and pull very hard and it will not feed at all. Obviously it was not set up right at the factory and the repairs are complex. How to fix it is a mystery after days of research and effort. BUYER BEWARE AND IT DOES NOT FULFILL WHAT IS PROMISED IN ALL THE ADS. DISGUSTED CUSTOMER IS THE ONLY WAY TO DESCRIBE ME AND I AM A LIFETIME WOODWORKER AND VERY EXPERIENCED. I already threw my back out trying to feed boards to this machine which does not feed at all. Powermatic has lost me as a customer. ... show more
