  • I'm a Believer
Style: Planer
This 15 HH replaces a Jet 13" planer in my personal shop. I have a read literally dozens and dozens of reviews on the head and I have to tell you, I was cautiously skeptical. But I kept reading the same comments, over and over again. Different people from all over the country but all saying the same things about this revolutionary cutter head system. Finally I was in a position where the 13" was limiting what I could do and frankly, I was having to replace the steel knives every month. And I'm just a hobbiest mind you so it's not like the machine is running for hours a day. But the maple and walnut and cherry and beech I was running through it were just too rough on the knives. In an effort to lengthen the lifespan of the steel knives, I would plane no more than 1/32" at a time, often less and I set the machine for 10fps. But I digress. Finally I purchased the 15HH from Amazon. Why Powermatic? Because my Powermatic 15" bandsaw is the finest piece of woodworking machinery I have ever laid hand on. My hope was that their planers were just as good. I looked at them all too. Jet, Grizzly, every major manufacturer. But I kept coming back to PM, in spite of the price. As usual, delivery from Amazon was lightening fast, less than a week from order date to delivery. The machine arrived crated VERY well and the delivery truck had a lift gate so, with a pallet jack, it was quickly in my garage. I uncreated the machine and muscled it off the pallet and on to its internal casters without too much difficulty...................and I'm 62 years old. A fit 62, but 62 none the less. The machine comes mostly assembled and the assembly required is very well spelled out in the accompanying manual. The consumer must install the height adjustment crank wheel, the Infeed and Outfeed tables, the exhaust hood and the electrical plug of choice. The necessary tools are supplied for all of this and, by myself, I had it uncrated and assembled in two hours, which included a half hour trip to the hardware store for the electrical plug end. The Infeed and Outfeed tables were a little tough, but only because of their weight. Aligning them was a breeze and with a rubber mallet, the fit and alignment is perfect. I spent a full 30 minutes inspecting all the factory settings and found them all to be per spec.. So, with nothing else to assemble or inspect, I fired it up and nearly fell over. This thing is THREE times the HP of my 13" Jet. It is twice as large. Yet, it is CLEARLY producing less than half the noise. Both under load and no load. Height adjustments are very quick and the finish, even on curly maple which is notoriously difficult to plane, is astonishing. Out of the box, with NO adjustment on my part, snipe was almost non existent. Personally, I don't think one can EVER truly eliminate all snipe without doing the "end-to-end" thing with your lumber. But I purposefully didn't do this because I WANTED to see what the snipe looked like without engaging in any mitigating actions. So finally, I cleaned it and put four coats of wood friendly wax on all exposed surfaces. MY ONLY NEGATIVE: A machine of this price range SHOULD have a DRO as an included component. For some unknown reason, the 15SS comes with a DRO but the HH does not. Why? Clearly consumers of the HH have indicated that price isn't their deciding factor so the marketing gurus at Powermatic ought to hike the price by $75.00 and include the DRO. Instead I bought a Wixley "after market" digital read out which works wonderful. It just would have been nice to have it included and PM Gold in color! So...................I'm probably at a 4.75 Star Review but the shear quality and the amazingly reduced noise level absolutely warrant the 5-Star.. It is a joy to operate and it was surprisingly simple to assemble, by myself, without and helping hands what-so-ever. I will post again once I've run a few thousand bf of lumber through it. Overall? I AM AMAZED! PM has hit a grand slam with this design. ... show more

  • Wrong starter box included and Powermatic doesn't care
Style: Planer
Its a beautiful machine but I have two issues with the one I received. One, they sent the wrong starter box. I was still able to mount it on the machine but it sticks slightly above the return rollers and I suspect that sooner or later I'll bang a board against starter box plastic housing and possibly crack it. The one that was supposed to come with this HH planer is much more compact and mounts well below the rollers. The second thing is the loud bang the noise makes when I turn the planer on. I researched this second issue online but as of yet, I haven't found a satisfactory answer for this. So, just call Powermatic customer service for these issues and get them resolved, right? Nope. I sent pictures of the starter box in place at least three times to a supervisor named Dave and I'm still waiting for a response. I spoke to him the first time and he seemed willing to help. Since then, nothing. It was pretty much the same when I spoke to one of Dave direct reports about the loud starting sound. I let him hear it over the phone. He said "Yeah, that sounds pretty loud. Let me transfer you to my supervisor..... Dave". Again, nothing. Blowing me off once they had my money in hand is something I wouldn't even expect from a third-rate company let alone someone like Powermatic. Now I suspect that they're just waiting for me to get frustrated enough to give up. I won't. I paid a premium price for this machine because of Powermatic's reputation. I was planning on buying their 8" HH jointer later this year. Obviously that won't be happening now. UPDATE: Today is 1/14/20 and Powermatic returned my call. Here's basically how it went: First - about the starter box being too high - Them: "That's apparently the new design" Me: "Why would the new design place the starter box higher than the rollers"? Them: "I'm not sure". Me: "Why do all the images I can find of this machine show a more compact starter box positioned well below the rollers"? Them: "I don't know. This is the new design". Me: "What about the loud banging noise at start-up that I let you hear when I had you on the phone"? Them: Our phones have filters on them that block out loud noises to protect our hearing". Me: "Take my word for it" Them: "Try removing the belt guard and starting it up" Me: After the phone call ended I did exactly that. No change. Them: "It may be something to do with too much voltage" Me: I had a licensed electrician install a new outlet for me and even he had no clue what it was so loud on start up. A side note - I've been a old-school trained woodworker for over 30 years and also spent my career in new product development involved in designing and creating complex machines. If any of the engineers or customer service people I worked with had tried to explain these problems away like this, they would've been laughed out of the building So fellow woodworkers, take this as you will. If either of these issue gets resolved, I'll be back to let you know. I have no ax to grind other than these two issues. To be fair, I bought a twenty-year old Powermatic 20" disc sander this summer and couldn't be happier with it. Also - I don't know if the third party I purchased this from is culpable for any of this, other than the fact that they did send me this machine with what I consider the wrong starter box. I will say the packaging and delivery went just fine. Other than my issues, the planer does work as advertised. I was just hoping their customer service would back it up with real service rather than all the bs I just heard. Update 1/30/20. I went to my local Woodcraft recently and the planer they had on hand had the same stater box as mine - slightly too high and different from all published images I’ve seen. It’s a poor design decision in my opinion but it appears that the guy I spoke to at Powermatic is correct about it being the new design. It’s ill conceived at best and I’d loved to know the rationale behind it, but the apparently the new design nonetheless. The loud sound at start-up remains the same with no good explanation. ... show more
