  • Overall, a safe, compact, and versatile home gym
Let me start by saying that I really like this product. I am in my 40s, and aspiring to put some muscle on my slim 5'8" 145 lb body. I have a mix of aerobic (triathlon) and high-rep weight lifting background, and have long dreamed of building muscle. I have a goal of building 10-15 lbs of solid muscle in one year, and I think this home gym, plus some dumbbells and maybe a bar and free weights, will work perfectly for me as I ramp up on weight lifting. You've already read in other reviews that this product is not designed for serious body building, so don't be confused about that. I think anyone who has any background in weights, particular free weights, will find this product limiting. I initially wanted to start with all free weights. However, I decided to go with this product because 1) it's safe to use alone, or with my children running around me as I lift, 2) I would not be able to push hard with free weights without a spotter, 3) it's compact, 4) it's versatile, and 5) my wife can use it safely in my absence. UPPER BODY: this home gym can easily target all major upper body muscle groups. The incline and decline chest press positions are a little awkward and take getting used to. It was initially not clear to me if one can do a standing military press, but you definitely can. Funny thing is that the military press is not shown on any brochure, and the user manual doesn't even mention it under the "shoulder" section. Seated row can be done while sitting reverse on the bench with your front supported by the back support. This position isolates the upper back. You can also sit on the floor in front of the machine and do seated rows while moving forward and backward to target the lower back. One thing I both like and dislike is the abdominal work out. It's great that it offers a way to do it, but the overall range of motion is really limited by the back support and the pivot joint on the leg extension. You really have to think about stopping on the forward stroke to prevent hitting your head. Also, believe it or not, because I only weight 145 lbs, I can actually do pull ups on this machine by setting to the highest weight and grabbing the lat pull bar. It's rather awkward, and I have to rig up some way to prevent the bar from rotating while I'm pulling up. But I think once I figure this out, it'll be a nice way to do pull ups for as long as I weigh less than the stack. LOWER BODY: I would say that the product, as is without any additional attachments, is somewhat lacking in leg/buttock exercises. But it does offer leg extensions and leg curls. You can also do calf raises, but make absolutely sure you are standing ON the platform that is welded onto the bottom of the front of the machine. The leg curls must be performed in a standing position. It's a little awkward at first, but I've got use to it in just a few workouts. If you buy additional attachments, you can do leg presses, front/back/side hip extensions, plus others. SQUATS. Although this machine has no squat/deadlift feature, you can perform a hybrid squat/deadlift exercise by purchasing a two-handle attachment and connecting it to the bicep curl pulley. While holding onto the handles between your legs near your groin, assume a wide squat stance, and lower/raise your body. The only problem is that if you exceed 50 lbs (which almost any person can do very easily), the entire home gym unit will tilt backwards on its two hind legs. In order to remedy this very unsafe problem, I first cut a piece of 3/4" plywood about 5ft x 2ft. I placed it on top of the square frame that has the plate welded to it (immediate in front of the leg extension), then attached spacers underneath on each side of the plywood to fill the gap. I then covered it all with a scrap piece of carpet to protect against splinters. When performing squats, I stand on the plywood so that when I lift the machine does not tilt backwards. Using this method, I can assume a position very similar to squatting. The difference, however, is that the force you are lifting against is pulling both down and slightly towards the machine, rather than just down. Therefore, when lifting, I do sort of feel like I'm pulling slightly backward as I'm raising. Overall, I'm very pleased with the machine. With a little effort and creativity, I've been able to add additional functionality (e.g. pull ups, squats). I would recommend this to anyone looking for a safe, compact, and versatile home gym. ... show more

  • Great Home Gym
I rarely write reviews but this gym exceeded my expectations. I'm hoping that my brother-in law will read this and add it to his basement gym room that he has been working on for the past 4 years so I can use it the next time I visit. Shipping and Packaging- I live in a rural area off a small winding road. The driver had no problem getting it here. It arrived in a tractor trailer strapped to a pallet. The main box says it's 81.7" x 27.4" x 13.4". The metal weights were in 3 small boxes. The driver took it off the pallet and easily wheeled the boxes into my garage on a small hand truck. One or two people could easily drag the box if they had to. The packaging was impressive. The cardboard carton was wood reinforced at several points. Inside the box all the parts were packed tightly with cardboard spacers and strapped securely together with heavy duty zip ties. Don't go wild cutting the ties. The main frame ties need to be left on until the legs are attached. Assembly- I followed the instructions and had no problem doing this by myself. The main frame already has the pulleys and cables attached. I tipped the unit up and used a chair against one side of it for safety while I put the back legs on. After this you can walk it into place and finish the assembly. I set it on a "CAP Barbell Anti-Microbial 6 piece Puzzle Mat" over the concrete floor. This was the perfect size for the unit. The instructions were 6 pages and very simple. Written on the left page with a schematic on the right. The fasteners were vacuum-sealed onto a piece of cardboard over a size description of the part. They weren't numbered like the instruction book but the sizes were stated and easy to figure out. All the holes lined up and the nuts and bolts threaded perfectly. Anyone who has ever put anything together can easily do this. It's not an Ikea type project. You can download the manual at powerlinefitness.com or bodysolid.com to see what is involved. Quality and Function- Even though the box says it's made in China I was impressed. The tubing and welding are of good quality. (I was a welder decades ago.) All the parts run smoothly and quietly. You don't have to change parts or re-route cables to use it. Much better than my 1990's old-school gym from Sears. It has more than enough weight and exercises for the average person that wants to get in shape or add muscle definition. Needing a unit that would fit in a limited space and after researching other units that were more expensive and also much less, I am glad I choose this one. ... show more
