It’s a great way to water plants day-to-day, and the perfect solution to keep plants watered while on vacation. Our terracotta stake slowly releases water from the reservoir deep into the soil and directly to the root system. Plants grow healthier by getting consistent moisture where it’s most needed. Pre-moisten the soil and gently insert the terracotta stake near the center of the plant. The carefully-designed shape of the stake allows it to be inserted into the soil without damaging the plant’s root system. Fill a wine bottle with water and set it neck-first into the stake and the watering process will begin. Know at a glance when to refill the wine bottle by observing the amount of water remaining in the glass bottle reservoir.

I have always stressed when I’ve had to go out of town in the summer. I have an apartment balcony with no access to an outdoor hose for the irrigation sets that are always recommended for plant watering on vacation. How will my potted plants survive while I’m gone?! Enter these little game changers. I was out of town (July in the verrrry hot/humid Midwest) and these worked while I was away for a week. My balcony is fully shaded after 10am & we had 90+ degree days while I was gone. Of course, the humidity plays a big factor in all of this, so a dryer climate may not get you that many days of watering with Plant Nannies. However, these worked so well with my plants & I can’t believe it took me this long to find them! I tested one for a few days before leaving for my trip (80 degree temps during the test), and the water level in the bottle only dropped a couple inches (it was inserted into a freshly watered pot). After 1 week away, the majority of my Plant Nannies were out of water, BUT my plants looked great. I didn’t want to overwater, so it was the perfect amount of time to rely on the Plant Nannies. I have decided to keep my Plant Nannies in place all summer to keep from disturbing plant roots. Looking forward to using them again soon during another trip out of town! TIPS: • Read the instructions & other reviews to make sure you insert them correctly. They’re very delicate so they will break if you aren’t careful. • I presoaked mine overnight, thoroughly watered my plants, used a small trowel to create space for the plant nanny, THEN inserted the plant nanny into the soil (straight from the presoak bowl). Once I had it in the pot, I immediately inserted the bottle. • I’m not a wine drinker, so the cheapest option I could find for bottles were glass Perrier bottles (25.3 oz / 750 mL). The way the neck curves on the bottle makes it fit perfectly into the Plant Nanny. It’s snug & secure. If you placed the Plant Nanny in at the correct depth, then it won’t tip over either (even when it’s totally full of water at first placement). ... show more

Overview: These plant nannies work decently enough, but they will not keep your plants watered on their own, especially in hot weather. Keeping your plants fertilized may be a challenge, and plants with shallow root systems may not benefit as much. I'd recommend these for indoor houseplants. If you're looking for a solution for outdoor plants or herbs/vegetables, you may want to look more into drip irrigation. More specifics: I live in USDA Zone 6a. I've grown the plants in the pictures from seed (same packets) and they are now five months old. I've been using the plant nannies for the past one month. In hot weather (85+ deg F), plants without the nannies started to wilt after one day without being watered. Those that had the nannies wilted after two/three days without being watered. They did make a difference, but they will not keep your plants watered on their own. I've ended up watering my plants every day anyway, just using less water and relying on the nannies as a reserve source of water. Fertilization is definitely a concern. Long-release granular fertilizers that you spread on top of the soil will not work anywhere near as well with the plant nannies. They are designed to dissolve when you water them, which you may do less with the nannies. I've tried my best with applying liquid fertilizers and foliar sprays as an alternative, but the difference in still obvious. In the pictures attached, you can see the difference in size and color due to lack of nutrients. Left are those with plant nannies with liquid fertilizer applications, right are those without plant nannies with a granular fertilizer. If you're more comfortable with non-granular fertilizers, you may have better luck. One last thing to note is that water only wicks at the tip of the nannies. This helps reduce unnecessary evaporation at the soil surface, but it may cause plants with shallow roots to struggle, such as younger plants or certain species. You could try inserting the nannies shallower, but they are a bit unstable and I wouldn't recommend it. If putting the nannies in an already established plant, keep in mind that it will take the plant some time to adapt to the new method of watering as well. ... show more

Love the fact that I can have my plants watered without me being there. I can use a bottle as large as a wine bottle full of water to keep my plants alive. Got a plant that sits in the hot sun? Read other reviews about these stakes breaking easily, so I was very gentle with bottle placement and soil insertion. The first one went in perfectly, but the second one broke going into the soil. I think these are going to work well for what I need them for, but they are extremely fragile.
