Description

PEUGEOT: France, since 1810. Peugeot mills are renowned by chefs and gourmet cooks the word over for the consistent grind results they produce, their incredible resilience and proven reliability. Compromise is not a word that fits into the Peugeot vocabulary. For each spice, there is one – and only one – Peugeot grinding mechanism: peppercorns; coarse dry salt; chilies; herbs and spices; wet salts; and nutmeg. Add the coffee mechanism, which started it all and there are seven unique Peugeot mechanisms. Each is designed to derive the most flavor and greatest aroma from its complementary spice. Aesthetically pleasing, Peugeot mills deliver the height of quality, durability, reliability and innovation; making these mills the ones to which all others are compared. The high quality beech wood used in Peugeot mills is grown, harvested, dried, shaped and finished in France. For Paris u'Select mills, the grind is adjusted by turning the ring at the bottom of the mill. Turning the ring in one direction makes a finer grind; turning in the other makes it coarser. Once the grind size is set, it will stay in place until the user changes it. This mill is equipped with Peugeot's legendary pepper grinding mechanism. Made of case- hardened steel, it has received additional treatment against wear and corrosion. Its double-row of helix-shaped claws grab and crack each peppercorn, before drawing it down to the teeth for the perfect grind.

I have several Peugeot pepper or salt mills. This one is no different, although the "select" bit of the mechanism seems a bit stiffer than the others. It might simply be because it's new. (At least one of mine is 30 years old . . . and still going strong!) It's glossy white, apparently over wood--very nice looking. Spiffy. There are peppercorns inside, but I would seriously replace them with some you know are fresh and of the variety you like. And, be aware, if you are getting this as a gift for somebody, it does NOT come inside its own separate box, but just loose in the general Amazon order. ... show more

Lovely form and finish, nice size, reasonable capacity. Unlike others I've used in the past, this one's size selector actually works, AND it actually yields consistently sized grains -- selected the smallest size and you'll get a pile of tiny ground pepper, not some tiny ground pepper with a bunch of huge peppercorn chunks mixed in. Excellent! One star off for the fact that there were a couple of small but very noticeable pits and chips in the surface right out of the box. That's really kinda not ok for a **$40** plastic pepper mill. Initially I knocked another star off, because for my first couple of days using this, it was SO SLICK. Dried my hands extra thoroughly, then washed them again and dried them again, and it was still hard to grip well -- I suspect that it might've had some kind of lubricant or other residue from the manufacturing process. I don't know about you, but my hands are always at least slightly damp while I'm working in the kitchen -- moist from whatever I'm chopping, or from washing my hands/bowl/food/etc, and this thing was so slippery it felt like it had been greased. I gave it a hot soapy scrub-down and it seems to be better now (tho still not ideal). Issue #1 is just quality control or poor shipping (are these supposed to be in a branded box? Mine was just rattling around the shipping carton in a bubble wrap sleeve). Issue #2 could easily be solved by either altering the mold for the "equatorial" area of the top bulb piece to be tightly ribbed/fluted/knurled, or (even better, and would preserve the sleek shiny look) given a hexagonal or octagonal flat-planes faceted shape instead of a smooth curve. It would still be aesthetically pleasing, but would be even easier to use. ... show more

It's weighted well (I got the 12") Feels good in your hands. It's aesthetic and pretty. I had high expectations with the brand name. But the corns don't fall. I grind it onto a plate and it works perfect. But then I go to grind again and the peppercorns don't naturally settle downward towards the grinding gears. I have to shake it to get it to work again. That gets old after 3 shakes. So now it's a pretty ornament in my dining room. Seriously, I'd rather keep it than return it because it's very pretty. Hope this helps. ... show more

Not sure why it asked to rate “sheerness” and “thickness” of this product. Not very sheer, but I suppose you could say she’s thick. This is a bigger version of a Peugeot pepper grinder I have had for about 20 years. I liked my old one but wanted a bigger version to grind more pepper, faster. Unfortunately the larger one isn’t more efficient. It’s basically the same grinder that just takes up more room. Good grinder, you just need to grind and grind and grind (and grind and grind) to get a decent amount. If I didn’t have one, I think this is good for the money, but I think I like the natural wood one better, as it has a nicer overall feel and isn’t slippery in the hand. ... show more

We ordered this salt grinder that really didn't seem to work well. We returned it and asked for a replacement salt grinder of the same type. The replacement salt grinder arrived FULL OF PEPPERCORN!! Apparently, the replacement grinder we received was itself a return from someone else. We wondered what level of quality control the company has in place for return items? Lucky for us, once the peppercorns were replaced with crystal sea salt, the new grinder worked much better than the first one! We increased the stars from two to four. ... show more
