  • Nice and light but aluminum spikes wear fast
I got these for my flexible shoes (sneaker boots) because my classic BD Contact Crampon's heel was too narrow for good fit (mountaineering boots normally have narrow heels) and I was worried about the center bar (these have cords). One issue is that the aluminum wears quickly and its not theoretical. After two (probably abusive) outings, the points on the crampons were rounded and I had to go at them with a grinder (after getting bored using a file). I did the "Danner" review hack to smooth the edges for the cords, but this time I used a Dremel like tool because I did not want to remove the cords as they are sewn in a loop. Note, that you can move the ropes so the current wear points are no longer being cut. I also bought some Petzl backup replacement cords. Note that these do not have plastic anti-balling plates (ANTISNOW) and they have to purchased separately. Fitting hint: if you use the "advanced" strapping method in the instructions, do not pre-tighten the straps as you go as this can cause the bottom ropes to become unbalanced. I am going to try the Petzl Irvis Hybrid which are almost the same thing except the toe piece is steel instead of alumuinum. But, you have to replace the heel to the flex/strap ( T03A BFL) one to make a "Irvis Hybrid "Fl"". a version which Petzl does not sell. Probably could also replace the Leopard's toe with the metal one (T03A AV) after the aluminum is wornout. Update: Petzl Irvis Hybrid crampon I just purchased with same heel piece as the Leopard now has a factory bevel on the cord holes. It looks Petzl has fixed the problem. ... show more

  • Excellent Lightweight Option
These are NOT ice climbing crampons. They are excellent for glacier travel and some moderate (AI3) ice. The lightweight aspect is fantastic, the binding/adjustment works really well for approach shoes. Highly recommend this product but you need to understand the limitations of the design.

  • Lightest, but with a flaw that limits their use to flat terrain. AFTER FIX: 5 stars.
These are the lightest crampons you can get. I've been using them all winter, and without modification, they are only appropriate for flat glacial travel and short term use. The issue is that the ropes rub against the aluminum, and cut through the rope. It happened about an hour into my first ascent in the white mountains, the steep terrain was too much for these crampons. I used a spare set of crampons to finish the route, and when I got home I dug into the problem, fixing it allowed me to be confident in using these for the rest of the winter, no backup necessary. What you'll need is some abrasive cord, or a set of small files. I think the abrasive cord will have a better outcome. https://www.amazon.com/Mitchell-Abrasives-Abrasive-Aluminum-Diameter/dp/B0034G67QI/ Remove the rope from the crampon, noting the path it takes. Pass the abrasive cord over the routes the ropes pass by, paying attention to give each edge/corner a smooth finish. The photos show the original machining, and my (admittedly lackluster) smoothing job. I've used the modified crampons on 6 trips in the white mountains, only carrying paracord as backup in case the ropes cut, but it never happened! Good luck everyone. ... show more

  • Better machining than i expected
No sharp holes like others have gotten. Quality initially seem nice. Problem with bigger boots tho. Size 12 baffin borelis are a size too big for the dyneema cord on the bottom of crampon. Now i see they make replacement cord that is also the fix for fitting bigger boots.
