This GRILLMER 4 lb Hammer is as shown in the advert pictures...a hammer. It is not a log splitter as described in the advert text. It is very well made and feels substantial when you hold and use it. The grip is rubberized and provides a bit of cushion when you hit something with the head. The head is smooth on both sides. This makes for a bit slippery surface...but you're not pounding nails, so a textured face is not as important. The head seems well connected to the handle...no movement felt after a few pound pounds...no cracks in the bond between the two. The total length is almost 16". It's a compromise between a big sledge with a long handle and a smaller sledge with a shorter handle. I can operate this GRILLMER 4 lb with either one or two hands. You feel like THOR when posing the classic overhead style :-) ... show more

The handle on this sledge is bigger than I thought it would be. Takes some strength to wield this thing. You can choke up on the handle if you need to, obviously. The handle itself has a nice rubber grip that should help absorb some shock when using this. The rubber doesn't feel so soft that it will wear away quickly under heavy use, so that's good too. The sledge itself is a heavy 4lb chunk of steel, and on the end of that long handle it will give you a workout. It looks to be securely attached to the handle. The faces are smooth and the edges are beveled nicely. I've been needing a small sledge for some tasks, and this will fit the bill. ... show more

Nice, solid hammer. Good weight and solid feeling construction. So far I've used it to break open a few geodes that my daughter wanted to bust open. Did just fine for that as you'd expect. The grip feels nice as does the weight. This hammer will definitely get the job done.

The build quality of the hammer is nice and the handle is comfortable to use even for extended periods of times . That said I got this hammer for metal working and the face of the hammer was machined unevenly and the corners were not well done. So overall this is a ok hammer that could have been much better if the machining was better done. ... show more

This listing was originally only for the hammer. The hammer is great it is strong and a nice weight. However I have no idea about the log splitter part. Buyer beware on the log splitter because all reviews here so far are just on the hammer alone.

Good stout square head mini-sledge. Used it to break loosed a stuck tire rim while using a wood block piece. Does what a hammer does. Resin on the top looks good. Handle is of a good size. Rubber grip could be a bit thicker and grippier. Overall no complaints. Going in the barn till I need it next.

    • Lack of support a deal breaker
I was very excited to find this product, as my partner and I have a fire pit in our backyard and cook/relax out there frequently. Firewood is easy to come by at local stores and we have firewood we've cut ourselves as well, so an easy method for making kindling would be perfect for us. Other models of kindling splitters include a circle at the top that helps hold the logs steady. The minimal support on this model makes a huge difference. We tried setting logs on top of the blade on this model, and we tried "tapping" them in place with a light blow of the hammer, but in either case it takes a full blow from the sledge hammer to split the log into kindling. That increases the likelihood that the sledgehammer will then follow through and hit the blade of the kindling splitter. I think that a model that does a better job holding the logs in place would be easier to use and less likely to be damaged by normal usage. However, the splitter has a nice sharp blade and the overall construction is sturdy and probably long lasting, so I am rating it three stars for useful components. ... show more

Got this hammer for my wife and she loves it. She is currently using it on her landscaping project and has a surprisingly longer hammer than I was expecting. Has enough heft to it to break a brick in a single blow. The handle has a rubberish grip so this stays in your hand nicely. Hammer looks exactly like the picture. ... show more
