  • Lots of issues, but...
Capacity: 1TB Style: SSD w/ Tools + Envoy Pro
This took a long time to get this working on my Macbook Pro Mid 2014 (A1398). Good news: Customer Support is excellent! Really excellent. So far: Drive seems excellent. Bad news: The external drive (with the Envoy Pro) was not recognized by my system. More details (these are the steps that eventually worked but showing hassles as well) 0) High Sierra or above installed. You must do this or the new drive won't be "understood" by the old Sierra and below OS. It requires the High Sierra (10.13 or above). I actually think that you want to reboot a few times and get that settled down and updated to 10.13.6, too. But, not sure if it really matters. 10.13+ does matter though! 1) Everything backed-up using time-machine to an external USB (specifically a Western Digital 2 G - a nice drive, for what it's worth). 2) Old 512 GB SSD placed in Envoy Pro (this is required and not entirely clear unless you read both inserts that came with the drive) 3) New OWC 1TB (actually about 960GB) in Macbook (it has the built-in interface but only High Sierra and above can understand it. 4) When you press the Option key on the Macbook at bootup, the Envoy Pro should be shown in the list as a bootable restorable option. All I had was Internet options. Customer service actually was going to send me a new Envoy Pro, but... more below. 5) I was able to do a partial restore to the new OWC 1TB from the WD but then nothing. FYI, I used a trial version of Carbon Copy (it's so nice they actually will let you make 5 copies - what a great company Bombich software is!) to clone from both the WD (and we'll see below) the old SSD drive. 6) So, after many false attempts, I used the cable from the WD instead of the one from the Envoy Pro. It (my old 512MB SSD) booted from the Envoy! So, you think it was the cable, right? Well... 7) So, everything is finally working and I'm about to call Customer Service to tell them so, and that the cable was bad. But, here's the weird thing: The Envoy Pro with my 512 MB SSD can now be accessed just fine from the old cable (supplied in this kit!) Anyway, that's my story. I'm happy with this drive. A little frustrated that I had to spend a few evenings getting it together, but very happy to get some more life out of my Macbook Pro! I still wonder why the Envoy Pro could not be accessed - maybe there is a glitch in it, but as I said above, I also had trouble completely restoring from my backup WD drive - a different issue, sure, but it might point to some kind of weird low-level problem with my Mac, just to be complete here. Hope this helps someone. For what it's worth, I trust this company, OWC. Really excellent support. ... show more

  • SO EASY- Anyone can install this drive!
Capacity: 480GB Style: SSD w/ Tools + Envoy Pro
I was a bit fearful of attempting to install a new hard drive on my Macbook Pro but when I saw OWC's site and the instructional video, it looked very simple so decided to give it a shot. I called Best Buy's Geek Squad because I wanted to see what they would charge to install the drive just in case. They quoted me $95 plus tax to install the drive and then another $95 plus tax to transfer all of my data and apps over. I must admit, this was the part that scared me the most- transferring all of my apps to the new drive. I decided to go ahead and try it myself, and if I needed to, I could always take it in to Best Buy. Let me tell you, if I could give OWC 10 stars I would! Their videos on their website and step-by-step instructions are SO easy to follow, ANYONE can do this! It took me literally 10 minutes to remove and install the hard drive. Thanks Geek Squad- I saved myself $100 in this step! This product comes with a case for the old hard drive and the MUST have special screw drivers, do yourself a favor and purchase these items with the new drive! The time consuming part was reinstalling the Mojave OS- I have slow internet and that took about an hour. No problem, go do something while the installation is proceeding. Once OS was re-installed, I had the old hard drive already connected to the Mac and just followed the directions to transfer the files and apps to the new drive. Took about 25 minutes and DONE! Saved myself ANOTHER $100 Geek Squad... You can erase the old hard drive and use it as another USB/external hard drive, but I plan to keep it as is in case I ever need to reinstall the data for some reason. What I really love about OWC is that they have all of the videos and instructions you need to do this yourself and a hotline for help if you need it, but that was not necessary for me. ... show more

  • Works awesome so far in my MBP (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
Capacity: 1TB Style: SSD w/ Tools + Envoy Pro
I upgraded my MBP (Model: MacBookPro11,4) from the stock 256GB SSD. Besides now having 1TB, I'm getting read/writes that are faster than a brand new 13" MBP. Not that it felt sluggish beforehand, but it definitely feels like it's had new life breathed into it. Running Windows in a Parallels VM is very fast. From what I've read regarding speed YMMV depending on the Mac model, and that the larger drives are also faster. Otherwise so far the drive has been rock-solid. Installation was pretty straightforward; if you've replaced RAM in a PC it's essentially the same. The only issues I had were 1) getting the SSD seated was a bit harder than I expected and I was worried I might put too much pressure on the drive and 2) the recesses in the Torx T5 screws on the outside of the external enclosure stripped very easily - even with just a small amount of torque - so be careful or don't plan on screwing them in and out much. I had a recovery partition on the OEM drive, and formatting and installing macOS Mojave (10.14) fresh on the new SSD was easy to do by connecting the OEM drive to my MBP using the enclosure. I used the Install Video for my model MBP from OWC's website as a guide and as well followed the instructions on their site: "Migrating Your Mac OS X Installation to a New Drive" (I'd link to them both but Amazon won't let me). ... show more
