  • Ideal for travel, just as useful at home
Have you ever been caught off guard in an unexpected torrential rain storm without an umbrella and arrived at your destination looking like a drowned rat? I'm not good at remembering to carry an umbrella and sometimes, just don't want to carry one all day, just in case the weather changes. This hat is a very handy alternative. While this hat stays in my car nearly always for quick retrieval for those unexpected showers, I find it to be of greatest value while traveling. It is packable, I roll it up and add it to my camera bag (which doubles as a purse), during tours. When unrolled for use, it still looks great. The brim is wide and keeps the water away from your face and neck. I love the fabric, it really looks like a quality, well-made hat. The tie is essential for use in wind. While from my prior purchases I know the medium size would have fit, I don't like to have "hat hair" so chose the large size instead. After a brief rain storm, I can take the hat off, fluff the hair, and I'm good to go again. I bought the black so it looks good with the jackets and raincoat that I wear in all weather conditions. Last year my husband and I traveled to Russia on vacation. One cold, rainy day, when all of our fellow travelers were huddled under umbrellas, I unpacked this hat and enjoyed the freedom of being able to walk anywhere, hands free to snap some gorgeous pics, snug as a bug. No one mentioned it, but I suspect some of these other people will be buying this hat for their future trips! I suspect I'll also be buying another one soon in a brighter, fun color! • Replacing 30 yr o hat. Durable, waterproof
Love the colors. My head slightly between medium and large. Bought both , kept medium. Actually, this was a Christmas gift from a friend and he bought 2 lol. I would have purchased it myself if he hadn't. Price: when purchased this hat was $44. Jan 2019 the price is only $29, but you pay $8 shipping. Mine shipped for free. Locally they charge $60 and only have 2 colors - Grayish green or red and black. I LOVE the many color choices I saw on Amazon! This hat is replacing the Outdoor Research sombrero styled rain hat I have worn since the mid1980s. Thirty years and it is still rain proof. I wore it backpackpacking, kayaking, whale watching on windy Resurrection Bay, camping, stuffed it in backpacks, rolled it in suitcases, carelessly shoved it onto crowded shelves, and ...put it in dryer . DO NOT PUT IT IN DRYER. Duh. That is what caused the rim to be so mis-shapened. Old is black and teal which I wanted again, but I like these new colors of blue and blue-green even more. I like the old version piece that allows you to tighten string so wind doesn't take your hat. The new one is smaller and harder to grab ahold of. I also have not figured out how to lock it in place. I live on the coast and it is very windy. I am expecting this to be the last rain hat I ever buy since the first lasted so long. I will be more careful with this one's brim so it retains shape. Old hat I rolled, wadded up, folded, etc ... show more

  • Hat is great, the box was not.
Size: X-Large Color: Yello/Dk Gry
These hats really work to keep your head dry in the rain and on warm, sunny days. I can't fault the protection they provide. The colors are another matter. What's wrong with solid colors? I chose yellow because I kayak where there are power boats and every bit of bright apparel helps me be seen, but OMG, the "dark gray" brim is closer to dark olive-green than gray and limits the high-visibility area of the hat. Come on, OR, you can do better on the high visibility colors. My hat arrived jammed into a box much too small for it and the brim was creased in several spots. The kind of crease that has not and never will flatten out probably because the foam core inside the brim is creased. I know the hat isn't a fashion statement, but at around sixty bucks in yellow, I'd hoped it would be packaged more appropriately. Crush the crown! It straightens out, but the brim may not. Oddly enough, a tiny item was delivered to me last month in a box that would have been perfect for the hat. It'll keep your head dry in the rain and cool on sunny days. The size was perfect for my melon head. The packaging was the worst. It's not going to win any awards for being fashionable. For function, I like it a lot and I recommend it. ... show more

  • Best rain hat ever!
Fits our large heads, perfect size & shape for Seattle area rain. Keeps your head completely dry, lightweight, comfortable and packable. We have these in both cars and extras on the coat rack. • What? There's a cloth liner inside? It's a great hat!
After checking the description and reviews of this excellent product on both the Amazon and Outdoor Research sites, I bought in immediately. In doing my pre-purchase due diligence, I never saw anything in either site description/reviews about a cloth liner inside the crown of the Sombrero. Guess the beat-down sunshine and strong Texas heat had already fried what brain cells I have left, so I might have missed the cloth liner/no vent holes part of those descriptions since I was more than eager to get this hat in Multi cam pattern to wear this summer. So, be aware when you purchase, that this is a great hat for fall, winter and early spring-your head will be warm, but I'm not going there for summer, at least here in Texas... I'm still looking for a sun sombrero for about 8 months out of the year to battle the West Texas sun and heat. That said, this is a great water and sun-shedding hat. The brim blocks light and water very effectively, it collapses easily for packing and pops right back into shape when needed. Seems to be durable (so far) and best of all, it comes in multi cam pattern, though I don't think it needs to be more expensive than the other Seattle Sombreros simply because of that. Be sure to check the sizing guide before purchasing, it was very helpful and seems to be spot on in sizing recommendations. ... show more
