An enlightening guide to opticsAre you in the dark when it comes to understanding the science of optics? Now there's a glimmer in the gloom! Optics Demystified brings this challenging topic into focus.Written in an easy-to-follow format, this practical guide begins by covering the nature of light, the electromagnetic spectrum, reflection, refraction, and color dispersion. You'll move on to common optical devices and effects, lasers, and optical data transmission technology. Industrial, medical, and military applications are discussed, as are exotic optics such as holography. Detailed examples and concise explanations make it easy to understand the material, and end-of-chapter quizzes and a final exam help reinforce learning. It's a no-brainer! You'll get:Explanations of the particle and wave theories Analysis of optical microscopes and telescopes Functional details of fiber optics A sampling of optical illusions A time-saving approach to performing better on an exam or at work Simple enough for a beginner but challenging enough for an advanced student, Optics Demystified illuminates this vital physics topic. • Loved it, tough subject
Finally, after struggling for a while, I was fortunate enough to come across this book. Granted, I do not have a gift for math and physics, but I tried to grasp, many time, just a few basics of Optics, with no success. Then I came across this book, fortunately. As a physician, I had taken "Math for Non-Math Majors", and "Physics for non-Physics Majors" in college to get a clue, but no luck, as I said. Now, it even more important to learn optics because of the digitalization of healthcare, and the utilization of sciences like nanothechnology, genomics, and optics to discover amazing things. That camera on an iPhone is being used for lots of new apps, and actually makes the iPhone a medical device, in some cases (the digidoc app to test for oxygen in blood stream, using an app and the iphone) This book gave me a well-need basis in optics, and I have a general idea now, of how it is being used by little computers like the iPhone. For that, I would like to thank the author. ... show more

  • Optics
Like all the dummy books, it gives basic information that has sometimes been a clincher to getting the question. However sometimes the info is too basic or vague for my university student needs.

  • Nice review source
I have several of the Demystified books and have always found them to be well written and to provide a source of quick information. I purchased the book on Optics since it has been many years since I had Physics. I've been taking some Astronomy courses and have found that my lack of currency with optics has made it harder for me to come to grips with some of the information in my courses. So far the book has served me well as a review reference and would probably be helpful as a source for someone taking a physics course when the optics and lens topics come up. ... show more

  • Nice volume for your library
The text was clear and easily inderstood I enjoyed all the topics which added to my understanding of the subject. It is also a great reference volume.

Kind of on a "physics for poets" level but a great conceptual overview using no more than simple algebra.

  • Good
Looks like a brand new one. Get it within 2 weeks. The book itself is pretty explicit. Good one for starters.

  • Good enough for the general reader who is just a little curious.
This book is very well written. The basic concepts are presented in an easy to understand language. The math is on the early high school level. This book covers the uses of lasers pretty well. It will also help anyone who is shopping for an optical device understand the numbers associated with camera lenses, telescopes, display pixels etc, etc. The audience that will benefit the most from this book are people who are curious about how optics work,,,,and optical devices work,,,, and what they are used for. As a textbook it would be on the high school level. If you really want to learn optics in a comprehensive fashion, this will leave you with many unaddressed issues and unanswered questions. ... show more
