  • Sounds amazing
I had many issues at first with this product. But then I realized it wasn't the receiver that I was having problems with. I was using a poor quality HDMI cable. I bought new HDMI cables and it works flawlessly.

  • The "Budget" AVR to get for 4k120hz - Better Than Denon S760H
Originally bought a Denon S760H to use with my Samsung Q80T (2020 model), Xbox Series X, and Nvidia Shield. However, despite assurances that the Denons no longer have issues with 4k120 due to an updated chipset, this was not the case. To get it to pass the video signal from my series X through to the TV I had to repeatedly change input sources to make it handshake. The Denon would NOT pass through Atmos from the Series X no matter what I did. No issues with DTS:X or uncompressed audio. However, the only "set it and forget it" audio setting on the console is Atmos since some games are natively presented in Atmos, and those that aren't are PCM (which can be encoded to Atmos by it on the fly). So, setting it to Atmos will work in all circumstances. This Onkyo handles it flawlessly. In addition to flawless Series X atmos and 4k120 passthrough it handles all my other sources flawlessly. This includes 4k HDR rips from my movie collection on my server, played through Kodi. No issues with any audio/video format I've tried so far. Also sounds great for music in all modes, I prefer it in multichannel stereo though. I'm also really floored at how much better this sounds than the Denon, which I am returning due to the HDMI 2.1 issues. Same speakers, same room, and mostly default settings other than messing with speaker distances and crossovers (more on that later) and dialog is much clearer on this Onkyo. Overall, sounds much more balanced without using any kind of compression settings. The UI is good, and the info displays are fine. Nothing exceptional here. Better, again, than the Denon which couldn't overlay anything on top of 4k120 and caused the receiver to show the info on a black screen and needing to handshake again (unreliably) with your source. Onkyo wins again. Cons: - Chonky and doesn't really fit well in many entertainment centers. Hanging off the front of mine. - Gets noticeably hotter than the Denon it's replacing and combined with the size I am slightly concerned with space I have it in being inadequate - I had an older cheap Onkyo with a dead HDMI port, requiring a repair, and then it died again many years later. - Automated setup is worse than the Denon. Set the crossovers pretty poorly, same with the distances. Not as good as Audyssey. Despite those few cons, the thing actually works, and sounds great so it gets my recommendation. Is 5.1.2 Atmos/DTS:X overkill for my 750 sqft apartment? Yes. But I love it! This is the unit to buy in 2022. ... show more

  • Open box Like new
Came in like new condition, appears to be functioning properly, so far so good. 6 month update, From 4 stars to 5. This is not the best avr on the market, but it will make you happy. Its great for 5.1 or 7.1 and also great playing music, on 2 speakers or 2.1 and great for surround sound. You can spend more money and get a better system, but in my opinion this is a great choice for the price. Not my favorite for listening to music but I love it when watching movies. But where I think you get the most out of this is 5.1.2 music and movies. ... show more

  • UPDATE: It's junk. Absolute garabage.
I'm not sure what I think about this thing. It was easy to install and seed awesome right out of the gate. But then I started having problems. Enough problems I almost returned this. TV would flicker. Casting was terribly unreliable. It was glitchy. In a last ditch effort before I returned it (because i threw away the packaging) I tried a few things and it's been perfect since! The receiver is hooked to a samsung tv. I replaced my 4k hdmi cable with a 8k hdmi cable to the TV. And I unlinked my Smart things samsung app and Google home app I was using to control the tv. I'm not sure what the problem was but those 2 things fixed it. I think that the samsung tv it was hooked to was conflicting when I linked it to my Google home app. So now we just use smart things for the TV app stuff. UPDATE: It's junk. I replaced it with a Denon that has been perfect. So after seeming to operate correctly this thing got worse. It just plain disappeard from our casting options. Every time I turned the TV off then back on, I had to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in to get the sound to work. Just absolutel crap. PASS PASS PASS On this thing. It seriously gave me more problems than anything else in my entire new home. And of course I threw away all the orignal packaging that came with it. Imagine saving every bit of packing when you built a new home! So of course I can't return it to Amazon. I may have some fun at Onkyo's expense by seeing if they will manufacturer warranty it. But who can wait for that massive amount of time and hassle... so I was pretty much forced to buy a different model. Now this Onkyo piece of crap is just filling up space and I can't bring myself to throw it away. BUY THE DENON!!! ... show more

  • Great receiver.
I have had this Onkyo for a year now. It is paired up with a Klipsch reference cinema 5.1.4 and has been fantastic. I caught both on a really good sale. This upgraded our movies and gaming experiences.

  • Don’t connect it to the internet
Everything worked great on it right out of the box. Then I did a software update, and spent the next four hours troubleshooting why I got no sound out of it. I connect my computer to my 4K TV through this receiver. It was getting the signal, but not Producing any sound. To fix this issue, I had to reset it to factory settings and prevent it from connecting to the Internet anymore. Once I did that and turned off a feature called CEC, I was able to use it as intended. If I don’t have any further problems, I will come back and change my rating. So far the sound coming out of the speakers is crystal clear. I use vintage Bose, 601, series 2, and series 3 speakers with it. If you like the sound of those speakers, you will definitely like them connected to this receiver. Connecting via Bluetooth was a bit of a learning experience, compared to connecting other audio devices. The audio through Bluetooth is also crystal clear, though. ... show more
