Description

Farah feels alone, even when surrounded by her classmates. She listens and nods but doesn’t speak. It’s hard being the new kid in school, especially when you’re from another country and don’t know the language. Then, on a field trip to an apple orchard, Farah discovers there are lots of things that sound the same as they did at home, from dogs crunching their food to the ripple of friendly laughter. As she helps the class make apple cider, Farah connects with the other students and begins to feel that she belongs. Ted Lewin’s gorgeous sun-drenched paintings and Eve Bunting’s sensitive text immediately put the reader into another child’s shoes in this timely story of a young Muslim immigrant. Read more

  • Beautiful Illustrations, Important Story
This is a really lovely picture book for teaching compassion and understanding. The point of view of the new girl, the one that stands out and for whom everything is strange and different, is really excellent for helping children consider the thoughts and feelings of those who are 'other'. The text is engaging to read and the pictures are beautiful. Would highly recommend for the 4-8 crowd. ... show more

  • simply beautiful, and make this book a joy to share
I've read this book to a couple of classes, 2nd and 3rd grades. I knew I had to add it to my collection because of the gentleness of the message, simply telling through one girl's experience how a community can and should reach out to the strangers and newcomers in our midst. Allowing children to imagine themselves in this situation, either as the main character or as her classmates, adds immensely to the vocabulary of kindness and acceptance so profoundly needed today, but without stirring up negative stereotypes. The illustrations are frame-worthy, simply beautiful, and make this book a joy to share. ... show more

  • This story captivates even the most reluctant readers
One of my favorite books to read aloud to 5th graders. My students love this story. It’s always a hit. One of my most reluctant readers of all time (and I’ve been a reading teacher for a long time) has hated every story we’ve read in class, including her own independent books. At the end of this read aloud, she turned to me, breathless, and said “that was BEAUTIFUL! how can a story be so good? how did you FIND it??” It was one of the most memorable moments of my career. She wanted a copy of her own so I bought her one. When I gave it to her, she hugged the book to her chest and started crying. To have a book touch a student so deeply was an incredible feeling. ... show more

Beautiful story. Being teacher of a very diverse ethnic class, this book was perfect to discuss many themes, such as perseverance and acceptance. There are many wonderful lessons this book can teach. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. You can never go wrong with an Eve Bunting book. I highly recommend this book for folks age 6-adult. ... show more

  • A good read, but the writer's views have been projected on to the immigrant girl character
The Illustrations are absolutely beautiful! The theme and process of assimilation has been well handled. But the girl's scarf or dupatta clearly tells the reader that the girl is a Muslim. Modesty in attire and conduct is a cornerstone of Islam, and it is not relative, and does not change with social setting. The guidelines are divine, and not set by the parties involved - women or men, and thus free from trends, movements that society embraces from time to time. ... show more

  • Great book
I read with my students who are all of Muslim faith and they enjoyed this book. It would be great to read if at a public school because my students couldn't relate to feeling different compared to their classmates since everyone at our school is of the same faith and all where similar clothes. They did say it was a great book to help others understand how the main character may be feeling. ... show more
