This reel is an absolute gem, especially when you consider the price. I've got a bunch of spinning reels to stack this against, and let me tell you, it holds its own just as well as ones that cost twice as much. From the moment I cast it, I felt like a pro. The drag? Oh, it works like a charm. Okay, so yes, there was this tiny hiccup when it tangled up on my first go (probably a bit too much line, my bad). But since then? Smooth sailing, my friend. I've taken it out for some bank and boat fishing, and let me tell you, it casts like a dream. I even gave it a little dip in freshwater a couple of times – and it still spins and reels like it's covered in butter. Now, if I really had to find something to nitpick about, it'd be that the handle knob can sometimes loosen a smidge. Bought 2 lightweight models for ultralight rods. Spooled with 4lb test and away we went. These are my first Okuma reels and they didn't disappoint. More ball bearings than I've ever seen on a lightweight reel. Very effortless retrieves. Best part is, it's got the smoothest drag ever. My high end reels aren't this smooth. There's no stacking in the drag, just a smooth ,gradual release of line as the fish pulls. It's hard to explain. Some reels get to the release point and let go with a jerky motion. On these Okuma reels, you hardly know the drag is operating. It's that quiet. We caught several larger fish the first time out including a 4 lb smallmouth and a 25 inch northern on the 4 lb test line with no trouble. Drag worked perfect. Can't believe these are 40.00 reels. I really liked this reel. It is balanced and precision. I bought it based on other reviews and found it to be better than similar within the 50 to 75 dollar price range. I use 4 lb test and throw a multitude of spinners and flies on a bubble…and I fished with this reel for about fifteen solid hours of casting and retrieving this summer. My only issue is that the bail is not very responsive. It is an issue to close after casting, and MANY times the bail would just close when casting! Seriously, like 10% of my attempts at casting, the bail would close. Other than that, I recommend making the purchase….just make a concentrated effort to open the bail with a little extra attention. ... show more

These reels perform flawlessly and they're as reasonably priced as you can find. I ended up buying 3 more so I now have 4. Okuma customer service was also great to work with when I wanted to buy spare spools for them.

I was skeptical when my brother recommended an Okuma reel. $50 for the lightest one of this model. But it performed well through a busy creek fishing season. Paired up with 6lb Spiderwire braid, a slew of different lightweight lures. I don't like that it doesn't have the same reel-backwards-to-put-the-bail-trip-under-my-finger, but apparently all of the manufacturers have discontinued that feature.
