  • One of the best games ever made
Hardware Platform: PlayStation 4
This will be the best $20 you've spent on a game. For those unfamiliar with Okami, it is a Zelda-like game set in a Japanese folklore-inspired world that originally released for the PS2, was later remastered for the PS3, and this game is that same HD remaster adapted for the PS4. This is the only game that I have played again and again, and bought for every platform it has been available on. You play as the goddess Amaterasu, in wolf form. She is a silent protagonist well complemented by her traveling companion Issun, who does most of the talking and provides comic relief. The graphics are beautiful and timeless, and resemble watercolor art. However, the game is much more than art - it also features a great story and mechanics that take a page from Zelda's book, including open world areas, dungeons, puzzles, secrets, platforming elements, and interesting side quests. The puzzles are not overbearing and are easier than those found in most Zelda games. They're still quite varied. Most importantly, the game is very fun to play. As the protagonist, you're able to alter the world and defeat monsters using an arsenal of brush techniques. These techniques are executed by drawing on the screen. In most cases, the game remains paused while you do this, allowing you to take your time. In a few cases, you're working on a time limit but the game allows you to retry if you end up failing. The battles take place real time but can once again be paused when you draw with your brush. The monsters, also inspired by Japanese folklore, are quite varied and original, at least to a Western audience. Monsters appear in the world (i.e., there are no random encounters) and, other than those required for story progression, it is up to you whether to fight them or not. Early on in the game, you can also obtain an item to keep them at bay so that they do not attack you automatically. Finally, each monster type has a particular weak point you can figure out and exploit to receive bonuses, making combat more interesting. You also have a few types of weapons to choose from, and equip as either main and sub weapons for different effects and play styles. Most combat and brush techniques also have upgrades to be discovered. Throughout, attention to detail is staggering, and I think you'll encounter some of the most beautiful scenes ever encountered in a video game. That said, the game is not without its problems, though they're minor. First, the default camera settings are terrible. Unlike one reviewer below claimed, yes, they can be easily changed. Do yourself a favor and set the camera to the invert both X-and-Y setting to have it behave as expected. You also have the option to invert only X, or only Y. You can do this in game, from the outset, by pressing the left side of the pad on the controller. Second, the camera rotation speed is a little slow for my tastes, unless you pull the controller stick all the way, and unfortunately, this can't be adjusted. The good news is, the camera does a great job of following you around and positioning, so this is a relatively minor issue. It behaves like a good camera should and remains unobtrusive. Finally, I do find the game too easy, and it could have benefited from a difficulty setting. In addition, without spoiling, for some of the optional side quest content, combat does go from too easy to frustrating, mainly due to the amount of health the monsters you'll face have. This can be mitigated to an extent, especially if you take the time to develop your character, but I wish it had been addressed between releases of the game. ... show more

  • known for their action games like Bayonetta, Nier Automata
Hardware Platform: PlayStation 4
A timeless classic made by the developers now called Platinum, known for their action games like Bayonetta, Nier Automata, Vanquish, and MGR: Revengeance. Okami plays like a 3D Zelda game, with fluid animations and real time combat. Here's a review for new players to know what you are getting into: -You play as Amaterasu, or Ammy as she's affectionately called, the white wolf on the cover. -The story is linear, but this is a sandbox game. You can mostly explore to your heart's content if you solve road blocks along the way. -The story is not difficult to follow, and may be underwhelming for some players. There are some fridge horror secrets and surprises, but don't expect a super complex RPG story. -The music is fitting, but there is no actual voice acting. They do a lite version of the mumble thing like Banjo Kazooie. Ammy does not talk, but she does make adorable dog noises. -This game is very Japanese, from culture to art to history. If you dislike cell shading and prefer 'realistic', you won't find it here. Likewise I don't know much Japanese history or myths and was able to follow along. -Ammy uses three different weapons, which can also be sub weapons, to fit the fighting style you prefer. Weapons and enemies do not have stats - the game's combat relies on your personal skill. -Ammy's other ability is her magic ink. At a button push, you use the analog stick to guide her tail over the screen and make different shapes and symbols, all which have unique effects. The game focuses heavily on this mechanic, which can be frustrating at times but is considerably forgiving of your drawing skills. -The enemies are interesting and chaotic, each having a unique method of defeating them with brush strokes. Your ink can also impact the environment and other characters to solve puzzles and upset people now covered in ink. -Ammy can bark to scare people, dig for treasures, feed animal friends, not swim well, run long distances quickly, and grow flowers with her paws. -The game will expect you to solve puzzles and defeat difficult enemies. There is a boss you fight three or four times, and it gets tedious. For me personally, it's the most damaging issue of the game. -There are a variety of optional tasks that give you nice rewards. This is a game you will want to explore to its fullest, and it is not at all a short game. Playthroughs can be around 50 hours long, depending on how much time you dedicate to exploring and mini games. I hope you give this game a try if you missed it for the PS2, and the remasters on PS3 and Wii. ... show more

  • Great Improvements!
Hardware Platform: Xbox One
Absolutely stunning. I've played the PS2 and PS3 versions, and they somehow really do make the graphics noticeably better every time. Same classic Okami. AND you can skip the cutscenes! As someone who's beaten it nearly a dozen times, some of the dialogue just goes on and on. Wonderful addition. Some dialogue you can go through quickly, but some of the dialogue goes the same old slow route (such as when you get a new brush technique). For only $16 brand new right now, very highly recommend this. Won't get better bang for your buck elsewhere. Just when you think you've beat the game, you realize you're not even halfway through! ... show more

  • Looks great but falls just short of what I was wanting
Hardware Platform: PlayStation 4
The game looks amazing in 4K, but if you only have an HD monitor/TV like myself, buying this doesn't seem much different than the PS3 version. My biggest issue however was that, unlike a remake of a remake like the PS4 version of Shadow of the Colossus, this game shares its trophy set with the ps3 version. So as a completionist, I was disappointed that I once again couldn't play the game to earn more trophies. However, if you do not already own an HD version of this game, it is absolutely worth your time and money! ... show more

  • Beautiful dog... beautiful world!
Hardware Platform: PlayStation 4
Love Okami, this is one of the all time greatest games ever created, have played it on several different platforms and this is probably the best, the beauty of the artwork is fully realized through the PS4 and anyone who has never played it is really missing something, not only is it beautiful it is clever and the game play is exciting. Though I liked the way the wiimote enhanced the swordplay elements the overwhelming richness of the visuals using the Sony graphics made that pale in comparison. If you enjoyed any of the other iterations this is the definitive edition... ... show more
