  • Good for 2020 M1 MacBook Air
Size: 8in2 Color: Space Gray
I bought this hub primarily because I wanted gigabit ethernet to occasionally transfer very large files around faster. I have multiple other hubs and dongles to provide USB-A ports, SD card readers, and HDMI (thanks Apple for removing all of these!), but it's nice to have all in one unit. I like the 2-port USB-C attachment to the machine as the hub doesn't swing around at the end of a short cable like many others. One concern I had upon installing the hub was that the bottom clearly protrudes below the bottom of the MacBook Air's case. I was afraid it might make the MacBook rock back and forth on a flat surface. However, upon placing it on a table, I found that this was not an issue. It's actually the curvature of the MacBook bottom that makes it look like the hub protrudes too far down; but it does not. It lays perfectly flat on the table. I've done some basic performance testing of this hub and am satisfied with the results. My testing isn't comprehensive like a review site might do, just using what I had on hand. * Gigabit ethernet: I used "iperf3" free software to test my connection speed between the M1 MacBook Air and a 2015 iMac on the same network switch. Best result was 938 Mbits/sec. Pretty close to gigabit, and I wouldn't really expect any closer in real world situations. * SD card reader: I tested using a SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card and got 87.6 MB/s. The product page for the SD card says it has read speeds of up to 170 MB/s, but my 87.6 MB/s is in line with tests I found online. * MicroSD card reader: tested with a SanDisk 256GB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card and got 88.7 MB/s. * USB ports: I used the same SanDisk SDXC card as above, along with a combination of Transcend TS-RDF5K USB 3.1 Card Reader and nonda USB C to USB Adapter . This is far from ideal, as any of the above items could bottleneck speed well below USB speeds, but hey, it's what I had available. Here are the results: * Transcend card reader + nonda adapter plugged into the MacBook's USB-C port (no Nov8Tech): 85.3 MB/s * Transcend card reader plugged into USB-A port of Nov8Tech: 85.2 MB/s (same for both ports) * Transcend card reader + nonda adapter plugged into rear USB-C port of Nov8Tech: 85.4 MB/s * Transcend card reader + nonda adapter plugged into front USB-C port of Nov8Tech: 34.9 MB/s The one that stands out is the front USB-C port of the Nov8Tech hub, less than half the speed of all the other ports. I got the same result multiple times. So the rear USB-C port is faster, but it is also the only one of the two that provides pass-through power to the MacBook. This is unfortunate, but it's a minor issue. A little time without power for better USB-C speed isn't bad given the MacBook's excellent battery life. I did test the HDMI port, no issues connecting to my Samsung 4K TV. I don't have any Thunderbolt devices, so was unable to test the rear USB-C port's Thunderbolt connectivity. ... show more

  • Brick your M1
Size: 7in2 Dual HDMI Color: Gold
This dock worked fine for about 30 minutes. Then the Macbook Air with the M1 chip screen went black. The mainboard was fried and the whole computer had to be sent to Apple for repair. I am not the only one with this problem. Just search for "Macbook air m1 bricked by dock" and you'll find out how using this dock can end up with you having to part with your computer for weeks. I bought this dock because it specifically said it would work with M1. DON'T BELIEVE IT! ... show more

  • Terrible
Size: 8in2 Color: Space Gray
Visually: Looks sleek, but the hub doesn’t line up perfectly flush with the computer, the bottom hangs out a bit, not too bad tho. Functionally: I expected the usb-c thunderbolt port to act as one of the 4 usb-c ports on the MacBook Pro normally would. It charges the computer, but if used for midi or other purposes, it doesn’t work for me. Seems like this is only for the AC adapter. When connecting two displays with HDMI, one screen is bright purple, but after reconnecting it a few times it seems to stay somewhat normal for a while. Not great, not terrible UPDATE: Runs super hot, randomly disconnects all devices, when it turns back on one of the monitors won't work. This is junk, I hope I'm still in the return period. Im worried it is potentially harmful to the devices I plugged into it. Look elsewhere ... show more

  • Issues driving an external monitor and charging laptop at the same time.
Size: 8in2 Color: Space Gray
I have a MacBook Air (the most recent Intel model before the change to Apple silicon). My MacBook Air has two USB-C parts, and this dock plugs into both of them at the same time. Only one of the two USB-C ports on the dock would work with my external monitor, using a USB-C to HDMI cable. Unfortunately, that same port was the only one that would pass through power to charge my laptop. So I was unable to use my external monitor and charge my laptop at the same time. I tried the HDMI port as a workaround, but found it unreliable, with my external monitor flashing off and on randomly, typically when I put something in full screen mode, even my email program or a web browser. I replaced this with a Belkin dock which plugs into only one of my two USB-C ports, leaving the other port free to use to charge my laptop. The Belkin was more than twice as expensive, but it solved my problem. ... show more

  • fit what I needed perfectly
Size: 8in2 Color: Gold
I made this purchase awhile ago. I had problems with the first one I received, but before I could even request a replacement the developers reached out to me asking if I had any issues. I explained my issues and they sent me a replacement, as well as offered me a partial refund.
