I'm not a climber by any stretch of the imagination (I'm scared of heights) but I use ropes all the time around my house, vehicles, and boat. I have used the plastic-y poly ropes in the past and paid the price when those ropes deteriorated and broke. Those ropes also have a bad tendency to hold kinks, curves, and curls from previous knotting. A friend of mine let me use a retired climbing rope (green rope in photos) and the difference was amazing. Strong, no memory, easy to knot and, more importantly, unknot. I ordered this NorthPada climbing rope and I found that it was very similar to the climbing rope I previously used. It has little memory, coils nicely, and is a cinch to knot/unknot. It is a touch on the stiff side but that is not a problem in most of my applications. In the photos you can see that it is slightly smaller in diameter than my old climbing rope but it has about the same flex curve. My only other complaint is that the ends are not whip finished, just melted (see blue and green rope comparisons). Overall a lot of rope (100') for a good low price ($30). I don't generally do rock climbing but this is a nice rope in case I want to rappel or something. I did a quick test with my figure 8 and it worked fine. I'm happy with it.

A suitable rope for my purposes, although it's a little stiff. I'm hoping it will soften up a bit with use so I'll probably put it through a few paces before using it and hope that helps. I could easily tie a bowline and figure 8 knots in it, but not snug the knots down tight. At 10mm (3/8") it's a good thickness for using as a grab line around the perimeter of a river raft and thick enough that it won't cut into your hand when carrying the boat by the rope. It's got a nice grip in the hand. Polyester rope doesn't absorb water or stretch when wet so when used as a perimeter line assist to get back into the raft it'll stay tight when putting body weight on it. At its current length of 30 meters (98 feet) it's a great length for use as a static line in my unpin kit for recovering boats and gear. Cut into smaller lengths, this will be ideal as a perimeter line and bow line on my whitewater raft. Like others have mentioned, the ends are just melted so I'll probably finish them better for longevity and rope end visibility. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this rope for my intended purposes and it's a great value compared to other high-end, name brand ropes. ... show more
