Description

Fantasy action adventure directed by Claudio Fäh and starring Tom Hopper, Ryan Kwanten and Ken Duken. The film follows Captain Asbjörn (Hopper) who travels to Britain with his crew of Vikings with the intent of plundering rich monasteries on the coastline. However, when their ship is caught in a storm, they are forced to land at the only part of Britain without a Viking settlement and as they make their way towards the Danelaw, they come head to head with 'the wolf pack', a group of Scottish mercenaries under the command of the king. Can the Vikings find a way out of their difficult situation?

  • An Insightful Peek Into Norse Culture Circa 900AD
Most films about the Norse of this period are about raiding and adventuring. Unlike them but like many of the sagas, The Northman is a revenge drama. The telling of the story, exposes the viewer to parts of Norse religion and lore which are almost seamlessly mixed into the way the people saw and lived their lives. Costumes and settings for this film while not perfect, are probably the most authentic yet. True to Norse history, slaves play a major role and their brutal mistreatment is never glossed-over. The revenge taken by Amleth includes the systematic destruction of everything his father's killer holds dear before the the final step of killing the man himself. It is accomplished with skill, patience and deep cruelty, normal for the location and time. The end includes an unexpected twist. This movie is authentic to history as possible, meaning there are no concessions to modern sensibilities or ideas about inclusion and decency. The story is told from the perspective of the Norse culture of that time. Life was cheap at every level. So this movie will not be for everyone. I've watched it twice now but still have not caught all the subtleties and nuances, some of which go by very fast. I'll probably watch it again to pick up more detail. ... show more

  • Wow! I was pleasantly surprised about how good this movie turned out to be! :-)
Northmen: A Viking Saga was a very entertaining movie. I did not expect it to be so good, but it reeled me right in, and was not disappointed from start to finish! Great acting, stunts, and it includes magnificent cinematic photography, and scenery! Tom Hopper (Asbjorn) is a great actor and his facial expressions can speak a thousand words! The other actors were good too. I also liked the archer Thorald and some of the other Vikings & the Scottish female lead actress played her part of the kidnapped seer with second sight very well and believably too. As for the tattle-tale Falcon, I wish it was not on the wrong side, but it added a very spooky sense of drama that sometimes chilled me to the bone when I heard and saw it coming! Great movie! ... show more

  • It was average, enjoyable enough, but what I really want to know is...
...how the hell do I get it off my watchlist? I clicked Remove from Watchlist after I watched it yesterday and it disappeared but it was still on my watchlist today. So I clicked it again and it disappeared. I browsed a little , went back to my watchlist, and it was there again, or, still , or whatever. I don't get it. Why this movie? I just watched another movie, clicked Remove From Watchlist, and it came off and stayed off. Frikin" technology, there's no rhyme nor reason. ... show more

  • Incredible!
SPOILER FREE: This movie hit a lot of good hot spots. The cinematography is very well done with good rich colors and excellent lighting. I am not the biggest fan of the day for night shots, but that isn't a big deal. The sweeping camera angles of the landscape are very lord of the rings (Peter Jackson) and only a few times did the camera regrettably cut from some of the action. The good news. Great acting, great storytelling, excellent visuals, excellent action, and really cool messaging that isn't heavy handed like alot of other current productions. The soundtrack was well fitting and fit every mood that it was trying to convey and if you do an analysis, you can tell how the elements of each important scene come together like a well made cake. In some parts, just when you are worried they might go on too long with dialogue or exposition, a well timed event brings everything around for more adrenaline and edge of your seat moments. This is an excellent movie start to finish and I can't wait to get the physical copy!!!! 8.5 out of 10 😃👍 ... show more

  • Written by 12-year olds trying to one up each other.
There is no logic to this film. Having fantasy is one thing, but dear god, it's bad. The enemy starts out with x amount of people, they lose a small chunk here and there due to the adventuring party laying traps for them. By the end, they should be down to like 2 dudes, if that, but noooo now they are at a fuller power than when they started. On multiple occasions they just stop and glare at each other instead of taking shots. One dude falls down a grand canyon and survives. The enemy at one point has to stop because they can't get across this ravine because the bridge across had gotten cut. There is NO WAY across now, at all. However apparently they somehow show up again, but now with horses, even though their horses are miles and miles and miles away currently. Ohhhh, and the last bad guy gets stabbed in the f***ing skull and pretty much drowns but still tries to come back. Also, the lead is a complete wuss. Total waste of time, I wish I could get it back. I truly wish I could have rated it 0 stars and not 1. ... show more

  • Excellent VIKIND/NORSE Period Piece. BRAVO
I loved this Viking Period piece. I would highly recommend it for anyone of Norwegian Descent or anyone in Norway. James Norton aka GRANTCHESTER Fame on Masterpiece Theater has a brief role at the beginning before he is killed off. Ryan Kwanten aka TRUE BLOOD on HBO does an excellent job playing a Spirited Medevil Monk helping the NORTMEN Vikings. Ed Skrein of aka GAME OF THRONES and so many other plays the perfect Medevil Villain, Tom Hopper ( Chris Helmsworth look-alike) aka GAME OF THRONES and so many others plays the Viking Hero. Darrell D'Silva also of GAME of THRONES, FATHER BROWN, and so many other MASTERPIECE Productions is an excellent ROWDY VIKING Warrior. I highly Reccomend this Movie and would love to see AMAZON pick it up with a follow-up with a Movie or 2 with the Survivors and would be very cool to carry it over into Viking Norway with the Monk and the introduction of Christianity to VIKING Norway. ... show more
