  • Solid.
I had some custom door panels built for my car, and while they were being worked on realized the factory vapor barrier was in very poor shape. After some looking around, I decided to give this stuff a go - it gets favorable reviews from professionals against much more expensive products - like "90% as good as Dynamat for 50% of the price." Since I don't care so much about noise and was mostly trying to address missing vapor barrier, it seemed like a good fit for me. As I'd been driving around for a couple months with no trim on the doors, I really can't comment on how well this stuff does at sound deadening. The interior feels quieter than I remember, and the doors closing seems even more solid than it did before. But it's just how I feel, I don't really know. What I can comment on is that's very easy to work with. The diamond pattern gives you slack to deal with non-flat surfaces pretty easily, and helps you know when it's been properly rolled down. The foil layer is ultimately pretty thin, and I had no problem cutting with a sharp utility knife. The only installation issue I ran into is that in tight corners the rollers had a tendency to slice or mangle the foil, but after doing that twice I change my approach and had no further issues. I found with a light touch the mat could be placed and then removed, but once it's pressed down - even by hand - it's not readily coming off. I left my doors open with the mat applied for 5 or 6 hours to be sure it wasn't going to fall down, and it was very clear it was staying put. The 80 mil thickness seems like a good place to be - thick enough there is some mass there, but not too thick it'll interfere with trim going back on. Good choice there. Next day I can detect a *slight* smell from the rubber if I really try, but nothing I would describe as I problem and I am VERY committed to neutral smelling cars. I will log some miles with just the two doors done, but with quite a bit left over I will probably throw some in the rear quarter panels and the roof as well, then maybe I will have a sense of how it performs as a sound deadener. I've worked really hard to shed weight on this car so I'm hesitant to grow back even a few pounds in sound deadener.... but it's for science, right? UPDATE: Following good results with the doors, and having a substantial amount left over, I decided to apply this stuff to the doghouse cover of my older motorhome. The cover is just fiberglass and carpet, so there is a ton of engine noise and heat that makes it into the passenger compartment. I used a fair amount of the Noico, and sealed joints & unions with their "special" tape to ensure the rubber didn't get squeezed out or ooze onto the engine. 2000 miles later - including several passes over the Cascades - I can say that this stuff has dramatically cut down on noise, but also improved the heat situation. It's now possible to have a conversation at a reasonable volume while cruising down the freeway. These mountain passes are about worst case scenario for engine heat, and the Noico stayed put and there's no indication of problems - the picture is *post* drive. This isn't exactly analogous to a car since there's a 1' air gap between engine and cover and substantial air flow, it's still putting up with some pretty direct heat here. Cool! ... show more

  • Way too Expensive - Shop Other Listings
For those unaware, the pricing for this kit has jumped nearly 4x in less than two years...and it's not inflation. The Amazon seller changed from StP Atlantic LLC to this Mangas Naturals or whatever...search for StP Atlantic on google and find their store...you can see they still exist and sell the 80mil Kilmat in 36 ft sq for $69, or if you're hard pressed to buy Noico they sell 10 sq ft packs for $27 - or $108 for 40 sq ft - less than half price from these yahoos for more product. No idea why Amazon pushes this awful listing. I bought Noico kit from StP in 2018 and it was great...but butyl rubber can't be substantially different and I'm going to buy their Kilmat kit this time around given its the same thickness...oh, and you don't need to cover every square inch. Turns out physics and such come into play and you only need to cover 30-50% of metal (i.e. door panel) to achieve the result of deadening...true story. ... show more

  • Good compromise vs. the expensive stuff.
Keep your expectations within reason. This is an imitation (but a very good one!) of kilmat or dynamat. It's sole job is to add that nice, tight, rattle free, high quality feeling you can hear and feel in luxury cars when applied correctly with a well tuned speaker setup. In that respect, this stuff is a better value than kilmat or dynamat. However, it does not islolate ambient noise as well as those more expensive products, but outright noise isolation isn't what butylene/ foil is for anyways. I don't understand why it's all marketed that way. This sound matting accomplished what I wanted it to do: It eliminated the rattle in the rear deck and door panels of my Camaro by minimizing the deflection of the thin metal stampings. This is a problem with all 5th gen Camaros. The interior trim is very cheaply made and it rattles. I know for a fact this increases the efficiency of my new speakers because they're moving more air and less sheet metal - no more buzzing, and the door and rear view mirrors now stay nice and still despite more powerful speakers. People ask me where my sub is hidden, and I don't have one. Some good 6x9 and 6 - 3/4 speakers are more than adequate in a small car if you know how to increase efficiency and keep them mounted as solidly as possible. This "sound deadener" is a compromise. It does a bit to make the inside of the car quieter, but not a whole lot, and not even dynamat or any other foil and butylene product like this will. Were talking 2 or 3 decibels in reduction of outside road, tire, and wind noise. Barely noticeable. That is not what this is type of product is designed to do. It is designed to keep big pieces of sheet metal from vibrating and resonating. This does an excellent job of that. Stick 1 square inch of this stuff on the edge of a cymbal, and it will sound like you're striking a piece of steel pipe. A little goes a long way. The foil layer also keeps some of that radiant heat out on those really sunny days, which I appreciate in a black car. If outright sound deadening is what you're after, a thick, closed cell foam product ON TOP of a product like this is what you will need. I didn't want to add that kind of weight to my car. The box of this stuff weighs almost 35 lbs by itself. My Camaro is heavy enough as it is. This material is relatively easy to work with, it adheres easily with a roller, and so far has stood up to 100°F plus days without bubbling or falling off the vertical surfaces in the doors, which I'm sure reach internal temps of 120°F or more. I'm very happy with this product overall, and don't regret not opting for the more expensive stuff. You can always add thick acoustic foam later for sound deadening if you really want a quiet car, but this should be installed first if you can only afford one at a time. ... show more
