  • Great Ball, Just Needs a tiny little bit of Care in Handling
Color: Disc-O (Alternating)
This is a great ball, whether you get the color changing one (which we have) or the always-red ball. A couple tips on care: 1. Always check and tighten the screw-in plug (where the battery and electronics are). If it's not tight when you start playing with it, the plug may come out or moisture or slobber might get inside. (Also if it is not tight when you check it, you might want to open it and check for moisture/rust and dry it out or clean it before putting it back together. 2. If the plug does loosen while you're playing with it, make sure you open it and dry it off when you are done. If you don't get the moisture out, it will rust, which will short the electronics and/or batteries. The rust does not appear to kill the electronics (at least it did not do so in our unit). Clean the rust off (see below for how we cleaned the rust), put in new batteries if the old ones shorted, and away you go. 3. If a medium or large dog chews on the ball for an extended period of time, the plug may loosen and eventually come out. So, yes, do not let your dog chew on this ball for 10-15 minutes or more as the dog may cause the plug to come out completely. No unsupervised play for your dog with this ball--use common sense! 4. Are the batteries weak? If you bounce the ball and it doesn't light up like it does normally or it only lights up every second or third bounce, or the light goes out when thrown when it hits the ground, or blinks on and off when the dog is chewing on the ball, then chances are the batteries are getting low and need to be replaced. We had to replace the batteries at two months because of the rust shorting out the batteries. We are on our second set of batteries now for two months, but have been watchful of moisture and haven't had any more rust problems and the batteries are going strong. At our rate of play, we expect the batteries to last at least 4 months. That said, we have a large dog who loves to chew and a medium dog who chews (but not as much), and they play fetch and keep away with this ball for an hour at a time 3 to 4 times a week. We've had the ball for 4 months now and there is no sign of wear on the ball from their chewing. We also use a thrower to launch this ball 30-40 feet in the air for distances of 50 to 75 yards before the first bounce (yes, we play fetch on a football field) with no sign of distress to the circuitry, batteries, or ball. We have also thrown the ball on the asphalt and cement playground when it's too muddy to play on the field, and the ball bounces spectacularly. We don't throw it as high and as far on the asphalt, but it still gets 10-12 feet high and 20-30 yards before the first bounce. We have not had one experience where the plug came out on a bounce on either the fields or the asphalt (because we always tighten it before play, and do a quick check every couple throws during play--it only takes an extra second to feel that the plug is still flush with the ball). Cleaning the rust: The little spring and perhaps a couple other small parts in the electronics are steel and will rust when exposed to water for more than an hour. You can make a paste with baking soda, a little vinegar, and use a toothbrush to scrub the rusted areas. Then rinse and dry, and it should work again just fine (check batteries if not). This only takes one or two minutes to do. Remember to remove the batteries before cleaning! If there is a *lot* of rust, (which is what happened with ours because it was wet for several days, which also caused the batteries to short and die), then you may need to do some extra cleaning. We did this by clipping 2 of the 3 legs holding the black plastic cover over the electronics (opposite side from the batteries), and then pivoting the cover on the remaining leg. This gives easy and complete access to the entire circuit board. Baking soda, vinegar, and a toothbrush and a *gentle* brushing and rinse removes all the rust. Dry thoroughly (perhaps use a blow dryer), pivot the cover back over the circuit, put in new batteries, and away you go! This takes less than 10 minutes. It's a great ball, just keep it dry inside. If it does rust, do a quick one minute clean--which is quicker than ordering a new one and having to wait for it, plus cleaning saves you $9 to $15 which you can use to rent a couple movies on Amazon Prime instead (and one less item of plastic goes into the landfill). ... show more

  • Sometimes my dog will get distracted and walk away from the ball or will go out to sniff the ball and won't bring it back and in
Color: Disc-O (Alternating)
I purchased the Disc-O ball and this review is based off of it. To start off, if you are someone who has to read the instructions, take a look between the cardboard package for the instructions. I missed it myself when I first open up the package. If you are playing fetch with your dog when the sun starts going down, then this is definitely for you. I purchased this right before the end of summer because knowing the sun would be going down sooner and sooner, a lit up ball is so much easier find at dusk. I have a dog that has a lot of energy and requires at least an hour at the dog park.. Sometimes I have to stay longer or I happen to come later to the park. This ball makes it so much easier for you and your dog to spot the ball after you throw it. Sometimes my dog will get distracted and walk away from the ball or will go out to sniff the ball and won't bring it back and in most cases I can easily spot the ball across the field for me to retrieve the ball. The only time this ball would be difficult to see is if it lands is some pretty tall grass, bush, or shrubs. I think this ball was made with the right density of rubber. It's fairly soft so if you have a dog that likes to catch a ball in mid air, you won't have to worry about them hurting their tooth. It also has a great bounce to it to keep it going if you don't have the arm to throw it far. For most dog owners, you don't have to worry about this ball just falling apart if your dog gives it a good chomp when they catch it. This is rubber and it will fall apart on you fast if you let your dog chew on it. If you have a dog with sharp teeth, you will get some nicks in it pretty fast. And if you have a dog with just massive/strong jaws, there's a good chance this ball won't last long. One thing I wasn't a fan of this was that the product says the ball will turn on with motion. The didn't quite define how much motion would take to turn it on. The was no way to really tell until you bought it and got it in. I softly threw this ball across my living room and the ball didn't turn on. It has to hit something pretty good before it would turn on. When I'm at the park, on firm ground I bounce it to turn it on, on soft ground I just smack it with my palm. Some people may think this is a bad thing, but I think it's just right. If I just have it my dog's park bag, I don't have to worry about small bumps turning it on and drain the battery when I'm not really using it. Or if you just have it rolling around loosely in your car, it won't bump something and turn on. To open it up and take out the batteries, I used a quarter in the slot to unscrew it. Anything thinner or not as wide, I can easy see the slot getting damaged and "rounded out". Sliding out the unit out of the plastic sleeve wasn't simple but it wasn't too difficult. I guess that is a good thing because I wouldn't want the electronic pieces bouncing around freely inside. When you close it back up made sure you tighten it snuggly because if you don't, it won't be water proof/resistant. I love how I can just run some water over it or just dunking it in water with some slight rubbing with my hands and it's clean. Even though the product description says you can throw it in water, I would be cautious about leaving it water for long periods of time. Simply put, rubber seals don't last forever especially after high use or in the event you didn't tighten it enough. As for the light, when it's on, it will slowly transition between several colors, staying on a color for a second or two before changing colors. The ball will start to flash to let you know it's been inactive and it will be turning itself off soon. This is a great feature so you know you need to get the ball before the light goes out so you don't have a hard time finding it in the dark. This size of this is about the size of a tennis ball and it will work with the Chuck-It Launchers. So if you have a much larger dog, I wouldn't recommend this because they may choke on it. If you have small breed dogs, most should be able to grab it because there are small little craters on the ball their teeth should be able to grip into. Overall I think this is a great product for the price you pay versus what you get. It definitely beats the glow in the dark balls because those usually don't retain their glow and I see a lot of people pulling out their cell phones or flashlight to "recharge" their glow in the dark ball. ... show more

  • Super durable
Color: Disc-O (Alternating)
My dog loves to chew and gnaw on her toys and this ball far exceeded our expectations on durability. My friends recommended this ball and now I’m recommending everyone to buy it. Plus the dogs go nuts for this ball on night walks!
