Description

This book is intended to help those who are discovering analog photography and considering investing in a 35mm SLR system. Nikon was the undisputed king during the golden age of 35mm photography; they produced twenty-five different SLR models from 1959 to 2001. For the young person who did not grow up with film photography, attempting to make sense of this diverse assortment can be a bit daunting. Nikon made many truly superior cameras. They also made a few lemons. Some of the great cameras are rare and expensive, others are just plain overpriced. Fortunately, there are plenty of outstanding high-quality Nikon SLRs out there on the secondhand market at very reasonable prices. This book attempts to guide the newcomer through the maze to an understanding of which of the reasonably-priced options are the best fit for one's preferred style of photography. Recently there's been an explosion of analog-themed blogs and YouTube channels. While it's encouraging to see so many young people enthusiastic about film photography, not all of the information available is entirely accurate. The bloggers and youtubers are sincere and well- intentioned, but they didn't grow up with film. Misinformation gets picked up and repeated and once it's been cut and pasted a few times it becomes enshrined as internet gospel. The sources of information hobbyists used to rely on are no longer available. Magazines with professional staff have been replaced by bloggers of indeterminate knowledge and experience. You can't go down to the local camera store and chew the fat with the staff and fellow customers about the latest and greatest. Today everyone buys online. Fewer people remember the days when there were two classes of camera stores, the one the pros shopped at and the photo shop where your mom dropped off her instamatic cartridges of family snapshots. The collective knowledge of the older generation is fading into oblivion. By way of background, I've been into photography since I was a kid. I developed my first roll of film in fourth grade and bought my first SLR at age thirteen. In high school I had a small darkroom in the downstairs utility closet. I am not, however, a professional photographer. The knowledge I am sharing in this book is that of a lifelong aficionado who simply wishes to pass down a bit of wisdom to the newcomer. I am an attorney by profession so if nothing else the book should be organized and well-written. I hope you find it useful. Read more

  • Good for New to Nikon
I'm getting back into film. For years I was using both Canon's film and digital gear. During lock down for the virus I had nothing to do so I starting spending time on ebay. I got a wild hair to look at old film cameras. From there I started buying them. I was curious about Nikons, never having owned one. So I started buying them, not knowing what I was doing. I happened on Brain's You Tube video on Nikons. Nikon has a legacy that very different than Canon's. Brian mentioned his book. I went to Amazon and picked it up on Kindle for $3 bucks. It's a great resource about Nikon cameras and lenses, their history and quirks. So helpful. If you are new to Nikon, it's a great place to start. And even for the experienced, it's a good resource. Highly recommended and you can't beat the price. ... show more

  • Great Book For Getting Into Nikon SLR on a Limited Budget
Purchased this book after I found the author's YouTube channel (Brian's Photo Show), which has excellent information. It's short and to the point. Brian gives background and comparison's to Nikon Film cameras and lenses, what he recommends and why. At the end he build a few kits based on budget and shooting preference. I would have liked to see more builds here. I also understand he has a budget in mind and there is a lot of information on his channel, but I am someone who just bought an F3HP (after research that I found said it was best for a glasses wearer), already had an F100, D700 and some AI/AI-S lenses, so I would have also loved a section on - best of the best. Great book overall though; I read this in one day - couldn't put it down. ... show more

  • Excellent information
This is a "must have" reference for all things Early Nikon both cameras and lenses. Brian makes relevant comments, the writing style is easy to understand, and there's a wealth of knowledge from an obviously experienced camera guy. And yes I bought this book and have no relation to the author. I have found this book and his YouTube channel invaluable in my own purchase decisions and have been very pleased with the things I've purchased based on his recommendations. ... show more

  • Excellent information
I read this book and it was very informative about Nikon film cameras from Nikon's first SLR the Nikon F to the last one the F6 and many Nikon manual focus lenses that are compatible with such camera bodies. Would recommend.

  • A very useful book..highly recommended.
The author really covers the entire production of Nikon film cameras in great detail. Nikon cameras dominated the scene in photojournalism and sports from 1959 until the advent of professional auto focusing cameras in the 80s. There is a lot of meat in the book.

  • Well written, informative, detailed, thorough, and accurate. Great for all film shooters, not just Nikon users.
This is an incredible book filled great advice, exceptionally well researched history, and no inaccuracies. Grossman's book is aimed at Nikon photographers, and carries a great wealth of Nikon-system-specific information, but anyone looking for tips on general film camera purchases would do very well to read this book. I hope that there are more books in this vein in the future for other camera systems. To illustrate how thorough and complete this book is, I know a LOT about cameras, especially film cameras, and I learned a good deal from Grossman's book. With every page I was very pleased I bought "Nikon Film Cameras, Which one is right for you". ... show more
