These work really well!! The only complaint I have is that it's hard to get the erasers out of the back of the pencil once they're low, but that's just a user issue. It doesn't hurt to write with, the pen quality is good, it feels heavy enough to feel nice and durable. It's pretty comfortable, the design for the larger pencils are very cool and unique. The NicPro Mechanical Pencil Set. These pencils are a great choice for artists who want precision without the hassle of sharpening traditional pencils. Here’s what you need to know: What’s Included: The set contains size 2.0 mechanical pencils (slightly larger) with lead grades: 2H, HB, and 2B. Additionally, there are HB pencils in different sizes: 0.9, 0.7, and 0.5. You’ll find eraser refills and larger soft erasers. Refills for all the pencils come in extra little cases. Lastly, there are two adorable lead pointers. Understanding Pencil Grades: Pencil lead is a mix of graphite and clay. The grade (softness or hardness) depends on these proportions. B pencils have more graphite and are softer, creating darker marks. H pencils have more clay and are harder, resulting in lighter marks. HB is the middle-of-the-road, medium pencil. How the Mechanical Pencils Work: Press the back button on the pencil to extend the graphite. In the NicPro size 2 pencil, press gently and tilt the pencil up to avoid lead flying out. The “claw system” at the graphite end opens when you press the back button to release the lead. To put the lead back, open the claw system and gently press the lead in. This is a great set of mechanical penicls. I am a huge fan of gel ink, how this company has me turned onto pencils now. I can't decide between using the lead pencils or the graphite. This set is fantastic because it includes everything that you could possibly need. They are great for writing, sketching, you name it these mechanical penicls are amazing! I would highly recommend. This kit is an excellent pack for people starting their journey with graphite illustration or drawing. I picked this up because I didn't pack my normal drafting kit, and have been very happy with it. Pros: The pencils all feel good in the hand, are responsive and stable. The vinyl erasers work well on decent paper and do not catch. The leads draw quite smoothly, sharpen nicely and erase cleanly Cons: Sharpeners: ditch the razors and get a proper lead grinder for the 2mm leads, It will save you a ton of mess. Stadler makes a great barrel grinder that is fairly cheap. Lead is fairly fragile at extreme sharpness but is resilient enough at normal levels, over all it is strong enough to do super fine detail workas long as you have a light hand. The beziel that indicates the type of lead on the mechanical pencils ( .5, .7, .9) has only HB as an option. The 2mm lead holders a very light owing to the plastic body but they are sturdy. 2mm lead holders bezel indicates only 2B - 2H hardness. It's enough for this kit and includes some (B and H) that are not included. This kit lacks a kneeled eraser and gum eraser, which is absolutely essential when working with graphite. But that is a fairly easy addition. Over all I would highly recommend this kit for any beginner or people who need an cheap stop-gap kit. Update: couple months in and this kit is now part of my regular equipment for at home. The lettering paint on the pencil bodies has worn away but otherwise they are going strong. If you are gentle with them they will last a decent while. And the leads provided are quite decent. A couple of easy modifications or additions can take care of the previously mentioned shortcomings.
